  • truvia (stevia derivative) and half and half. it's less calories than coffee-mate.
  • i lift as heavy as i can and with the exception of the first week where i was so sore i had trouble performing basic tasks, im typically not sore the next day. sometimes if i increase weight i am a tiny tiny bit sore in my upper body, but it doesn't bother me. until today. i hadn't worked out in two weeks and yesterday was…
  • you mean a 'real crossfit box' where the coach got certified in a two day class? and you don't have to be 'good enough' to start a crossfit box. anyone can as long as you get certified, which you do by attending a two day training class. that's why there are a jillion crossfit places.
  • here's what i hate about it: 1) the body fat is way off, which is expected in a scale. and i think because my MF in general is high the scale isn't as accurate with that. i weigh myself every day but i only record when my weight goes down. so that's alot of deleting things in MFP 2) i don't have a fitbit but there is no…
  • really? no other comments on this?
  • use that XLS spreadsheet from Heybales. it's a little confusing but it will tell you exactly what you should be eating. do you know your body fat %? that would help. if you can can get it from a bod pod or dexa scan it will be very accurate. body fat, weight, height, activity level all factor in.
  • i don't think 'muscle weighs much more than fat'. a pound is a pound. muscle is much leaner than fat though.
  • i can sort of see why she might have said this but it should have been framed differently. i bet the long term compliance of over weight patients losing weight by exercise is pretty low. and i also bet lots of them try to lose weight by exercising but not by changing their diet. i have read that 80% of weight loss is food.…
  • i would just disregard what she said. it's kind of like when i go to the vet and they recommend science diet for my dog or cat. just because they are a vet doesn't mean they are up on the latest foods. science diet is filled with crap and is for the most part a poor food.
  • get a heart rate monitor with a chest strap. that is the most reliable way. calories burned depends on lots of things: your sustained HR, your weight, how fast you're going, is it flat/hilly, etc.
  • if you live in a bigger city, just google bod pod. there should be at least one place offering it. i go to the university and it's $35. dexa and bod pod are two of the most accurate ways of measuring BF. and i don't think you need to worry about "hidden body fat around your organs". just get your BF checked at a bod pod…
  • i don't think you need all that information to compare. body fat is body fat. it doesn't really matter how much you weigh or how tall you are. 28% is about average. i think 30% or more is considered above average.
  • [/quote] i find this to be sort of offensive and more than that, wrong. you don't tone and/or gain muscle by what you eat. you gain muscle by what you do (i.e. strength training). yes, you need to be eating enough protein to facilitate that but come on, telling him that 'the fat in his abdominal area would be decreased'…
  • The OP didn't ask about eating crap every single day of her life. of course that wouldn't be good. the OP asked if it really mattered sometimes what you ate. and i don't believe it does. probably better to limit that but if having a little crap keeps you overall eating well and losing, then who cares? eating crap…
  • i agree totally. i guess i was asking more about the planned diet breaks to help with metabolism. you seem to support this. i can go on vacation for a week and have no trouble sticking my plan but my question was more, is there value in taking a diet break during that time and if so, how exactly does it work/look. thanks!
  • EDIT - whoops, didn't realize this thread was super old.
  • great post. so i have two questions. i've been doing MFP for over 7 weeks now and have done really well. tomorrow i am going have what i am calling a binge meal. it won't really be binging, because i've already planned out what i'm going to eat. i've only done this 2 other times since i started. essentially, i'm just going…
  • this is good. yes, either way i win.
  • i have no doubt that i can lose 60 lbs in a year but the unknown is how much LBM will go with it. i am strength training 3x a week and doing very minimal cardio to help with that. seems like the process of adding muscle takes much longer. i guess it will all just depend on how things go.
  • well we're still discussing. i told her i had to research before i could bet for sure.
  • there are 3 ways i know of for calculating BMR, one that uses BF % and two that don't. if you accurately know your BF % i might use that method because for me it was a 200 calorie difference between methods.
  • what about cutting back to just twice a week? or instead of 2-3 drinks a day how about 1? i agree with upping your calories, but drinking 3 beers a night in the midst of weight loss seems counter productive. i like to drink beer on occasion too but i have only done it once since starting MFP two months ago. and it was…
  • if you can quit cold turkey, do it but if not, then just phase out. personally, i've been trying to limit artificial sweeteners of any kind. i think they are toxic. i have also read about diet coke tricking your body into holding fat - not sure if that is true or not. if you enjoy drinking diet coke, maybe just try to…
  • you can use a HRM to get an idea for strength training, but if you're lifting heavy, from what i understand it's pretty inaccurate. if you're not lifting heavy but are using low weights/high reps then it's probably more similar to cardio and a HRM should be fairly accurate. i have the garmin 305 which i don't even think it…
  • well yeah. that was kind of my thought too. you may already know this but the bod pod is a huge space capsule looking thing that some universities have. if you google 'bod pod' for your city, there should be at least one place that offers it, if you live in a bigger city. you sit in the capsule and it somehow measures your…
  • thanks everyone for the input. i'll just enjoy the loss for what it is and keep doing what i'm doing. i'm planning to revisit the bod pod in 4-6 weeks to see how much muscle vs fat i'm losing.
  • thanks. i guess with my BF % as high as it is, i'm just worried about that number and losing weight too fast and how that might affect it (excuse the run on sentence).
  • yeah, sorry about that. i edited my post and deleted that part. i probably misread that to be overlystating the obvious and perhaps it wasn't intended.
  • i know it seems low but that is because my BF % is so high. i got the same BMR from the spreadsheet, Fat2Fit and that Scooby calculator.
  • i'm not in bad health except for moderately high cholesterol, but yes, i need to lose weight. and that is what i'm doing.
