Correct. Intuitively, some people seem to think that because carbohydrates are broken down to their base sugars fairly quickly (depending on the initial complexity) that they then must therefore go right to fat (which is made from excess sugars). The diet industry has popularized this misconception with the low carb diets…

This. Your profile says you love food. So make it an adventure. Buy a new recipe book and have fun with it.

So, basically you know that you are eating too little. And you probably don't want to log as you are afraid to find out how little you are actually eating. And yes, eating too little is bad. You will lose muscle mass as well as fat. Your metabolism will slow. You won't have enough energy. You won't be getting…

It isn't, really. Protein is good, as it helps you retain lean body mass while in a deficit. So by all means add more. But one doesn't retain fat because they are not eating enough protein. One retains fat because they are taking in more calories than they use.

Just saw this, but those are basically my starting stats from 2 years ago. I lost the wight by the summer (down to about 170), and have kept it off for a year and a half now. It is possible! Hang in there!

I saw that episode. My thought was maybe she gave it to them before weigh in to try and get them to eliminate as much water as possible. Although caffeine isn't really a very good diuretic - you need about 8 cups worth for it to have any effect, IIRC.

I used to be 50 lb overweight. I was eating all the foodz, and drinking all the beer. Then, one day, I had a salad and a glass of water. Boom - all that fat, that I had been working so hard on for years - GONE! That hard won beer belly undone by one day's healthy eating. One single day!!! That's all it takes people. Be…

Feeling the burn is what you feel during (anaerobic) exercise due to a build up of lactic acid in the muscles. It usually goes away pretty quickly once you stop exercising. Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) is what I think of as a "good" soreness that comes on a day (or 2) after exercise. It is usually bilateral,…

Another strawman. No one every said that. Your husband apparently has a reputable source for his meds. Good for him. But, given the lack of regulation, there is no guarantee that everyone is so lucky. The links presented clearly show that not everybody is so lucky. This isn't about you (specific). It's about all the other…

Serious question here, and I'm not a lawyer or anything, but is this true? There are laws regulating fodds, and there are laws regulating medicines. But supplements are not regulated as food OR as medicine - they have carefully positioned themselves in a no-mans land. So would you be able to sue them? What law would they…

And now we can add cherry picking too.

False dichotomy and a straw man.

What she said  Your husband's Vit D may contain sufficient Vit D. Good for him. But "I'm OK Jack" isn't an attitude I prefer for myself. So what else does his Vit D contain that you don't know about? Does everybody who takes Vit D have blood/urine tests to check their levels? What about supplements other than Vit D?…
-
No they don't! There is no regulation and no testing. The company could be putting anything in that pill and calling it Vitamin D. And how is the consumer to know? Not Vit. D directly, but the point is the same: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/05/science/herbal-supplements-are-often-not-what-they-seem.html?_r=1&

Not my post, but no it doesn't. If I chose to consume St John's wort thinking it will help depression, that is my choice. If I buy a bottle labeled St John's Wort, I should be getting St John's Wort, not some filler of unknown origin that the company decided to use instead because it was cheaper.
-
Right. How many people in this thread who are arguing that we shouldn't regulate supplements would like to know if the food they are eating is GMO or not? How can you chose if you don't know?
-
I was more using your post to springboard my thought than responding to you directly. Sorry. But the Gov would not have to spend that much more time/money on it than it does on current drugs. You want to make a health claim on your product; you do the research and present it to the FDA for approval. If you don't, you can't…

"Heavy lifting" is shorthand for "lifting things that are heavy FOR YOU, and lifting a bit more each time". Some examples would be Starting Strength, Stronglifts, New Rules of Lifting for Women, All Pro's Simple Beginners Routine. These are "strength" building programs, essentially and focus on the big 4/5 compound…

A lot of the work has already been done. Believe it or not, people in the biomedical sciences take notice of health claims. We test them. Pharma looks at "traditional" medicine to see if they do, in fact, have any efficacy. But why should they do that if they don't have to? They (Pharma) can sell this stuff without having…

Lol. I like you!

I think you have an ideological misunderstanding of what it is that the FDA does. They ensure that drugs that reach the market have demonstrated a certain level of efficacy and safety in clinical trials. i.e. that these drugs work and don't kill us. If it isn't safe (or doesn't work) then the FDA don't allow it to be sold.…

I'll see your empty statement and raise you a "nope". Your turn. Or you could, you know, actually answer the question...

So what is the purpose of the Navy. if not to "babysit" the civilian population and keep us safe from harm? The FDA does the same, only for food and drugs. eta typo

I posted about the contamination issue recently. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/1131906-what-s-in-your-supplements

Glad it turned out! Sounds like you hit all the style guidelines (except the ABV!). On my system (~75% efficiency), 11.5 lb of grain would put me over 1.060 every time for 5 gallons! And yeah - there is always something else to buy/make... I got 50' of 1/2" copper tubing over the weekend to make a new immersion chiller,…

From what I remember, shot is a lot of fully body strength - you drive from the legs all the way to the hand - plus technique. I'd say you need to be hitting the weights as soon as possible. What type of routine are you planning on? There may be "sports specific" workouts out there, but simply gaining strength through…

I doubt it was as high as you think... you probably did not have enough grain to physically get 1.066 if your OG should have been around 1.040. 8 lb of grain with 70% efficiency would give 5 gallons of wort with an OG of around 1.040. 8 lb of grain with 100% efficiency (which is impossible!) would only give an OG of 1.058.…

Obviously, some people sign up for a year, go once or twice then stop. But not everyone! It really is up to you. Once you start going and make a habit of it, it gets easier. If you are at a point where you want this, then you'll make it happen.

When it says "should not be used for weight loss", I'd imagine what they mean is "don't just eat this and nothing else". It is a protein supplement, not a meal replacement. So, I'd say it is fine for what you want. Eating it isn't going to stall your weight loss (as long as you are in an overall deficit). I use Optimum…

If family are thrilled, how about getting family to cook said pig?
