  • I'd agree with the idea of cutting down to 3x per week with a full body routine. Do your running on the non-lifting days (that's what I do). Have you looked at Starting Strength or Stronglifts? I also think it is normal for people to get discouraged. You are feeling insecure and not seeing the results, but you are there 6…
  • The side effect warnings are definitely scary! Sorry you went through that. I've been OK so far, but I'm just on the last day of the ramping-up stage. Start the full dose tomorrow... and stop smoking! Gulp! Btw - I quit first 15 years ago, the day I got engaged. My fiance went out and brought me Nicorette gum, and it was…
  • Beer. Yes, you can lose weight and still have a drink. Coffee (or any non-water beverage for that matter). Yes, they do hydrate you. No, it doesn't have to be "pure" water. Ice cream. I can eat it as a prediabetic. So can you. Processed foods. I have a busy life. Shoot me. Restaurant food. I eat out. A lot. You can do it…
  • I'm a smoker :-( I manage to work out - I can run 7 miles in an hour, lift weights, do 30 mins HIIT on an elliptical (not all on the same day!). I have no idea how much smoking affects me - maybe I'll do better when I quit? I did take a "staged" approach to my health: I starting eating right first; then ramped up my…
  • No - it's the excess calories that are making us fat. "Processed chemical crap" may make those calories easier to obtain, but it not the processing or the chemicals that are to blame. But how does making a plant herbicide-resistant change the calorie content of it? [By all means avoid GMO produce for other reasons, just…
  • My suggestion is to not worry about the sugar as long as your total carbs are within your desired range. Sugars are just carbohydrates.
  • I can't easily eat enough to get big (pumps up my blood sugar whenever I try). But I still strength train. You can get stronger without getting bigger. Seems worth it to me.
  • My stove caught fire in my new apartment recently - gas hadn't been hooked up properly. I grabbed the fire extinguisher!
  • Dump him. I could do a mile in 4:20 when I was his age.
  • Concentrate on getting good form now while the load is light! With the progressive loading, it will soon get heavy! There are lots of good YouTube vids out there to help with form (e.g. by Mehdi or Mark Rippetoe). Do cardio if you like. I do it on my non-lifting days.
  • Thanks. I think I'll give the plywood a try.
  • We are evidence that we are here. The universe is evidence that the universe exists. I have no definition of any god. I have been given many different ones by many different theists. I try not to assume, but a standard omni-max god seems the most common (at least, among Christians), for reasons laid out by soldier.
  • Would love bumper plates, but can't do that right now! Some plywood might well help, with something on top... thanks. I'm not planning on doing a lot of slamming the weights down type thing, but I do want to save the floor if I have a mishap!
  • Firstly, I'm going to suggest one of my favourite essays by one of my favourite writers: Asimov's "The Relativity of Wrong". http://chem.tufts.edu/answersinscience/relativityofwrong.htm Yes, science changes, but mainly by incremental steps. True paradigm shifts a la Khun are very rare. Secondly, when viewing historical…
  • You cannot prove a negative though. Prove to me that your water sample has no contaminating mercury. You can't. The best you could do is say it is below the level of detection for whatever test you used. So, based on that evidence, it is safe to drink. I'm the same with a god. There is no positive evidence that one exists,…
  • UU came up as #2 when I took that test (Sec. Humanism was #1, although I self-describe as atheist). I did go to a few UU meetings back when my then-wife was looking for a new Church (she is liberal Christian), and I actually quite enjoyed it. Wasn't "churchy" enough for her, having been raised Church of Christ.
  • I'm not the person who posted this, but here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LaVeyan_Satanism
  • Atheism means no god-belief. That's it. Period. Raelianism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raelism) and Scientology are religions founded on a belief in aliens. I think it highly likely that there may be life on other planets. If life started and evolved here, why not somewhere else? The universe is SO big, there must be…
  • The only thing you need do to be an atheist is not believe in any gods or goddesses. To be clear: the opposite of atheist is not Christian. It is theist. Other than on the existence of god question, atheists are no more organized and in agreement about what we believe than are Christians, Muslims, Jews, and every other…
  • I'm currently around 8:30 to 9:30 for 6+ miles. I haven't entered any races yet, but I'm planning to. Goal pace for a 10k would be around 8 minute miles in the short term. I'd love to get back to sub 7 min miles but I doubt that is going to happen! 20 years ago, I could a half marathon in 1:26 (about 6.5 min miles). Now…
  • Hell no! I would not date anyone who was into abstinence. That may well be because I'm 46, divorced and am not planning on getting married again. Marriage might happen one day, but I'm not going to rush it. In the meantime, I plan on living, and sex is a healthy, natural part of a relationship. Luckily, my girlfriend…
  • Since you mention weight training, I'm assuming it is increased muscle mass you are aiming for here. First - are you following a progressive lifting program like Starting Strength or Stronglifts? You have to be stressing the muscles to force them to grow. Second - are you also doing cardio? If so: stop, at least during…
  • Day to day weight loss can be erratic. You retain water one day, lose it the next... it'll go up and down in spurts sometimes. You have to keep your eye on the overall trend, not the individual numbers.
  • Totally failed at bench press a few weeks ago. Could not shift the bar at all due to a strained bicep. I had to take about 2 weeks off, but then came back and did that set for a new PR! The waiting almost killed me.

  • 1.5 to 2 pounds per day is huge. I doubt you'll be able to keep that up after an initial phase anyway. Have you just started this? Also - what is your exit strategy as you get close to your goal weight? You'll need to eat at maintenance when you get there, so as you start getting closer, increase your calories towards that…
  • Not anti-cardio? What was the title of the article again??? And maybe there is no mention of excessive deficit because he DOES NOT UNDERSTAND THE STUDIES HE IS TALKING ABOUT. I'm all for weight training. But send this link to 10 cardio bunny friends. How many will start weight training vs how many will just hang up their…
  • No, it isn't. Read refs 1-11 and see if they actually say what he says they say. They don't. The refs actually say that ANY exercise can decrease T3 temporarily, but they come back up. Having an extreme calorie deficit - either with or without exercise - causes T3 levels to drop, possibly causing hypothyroidism. The moral…
  • Oh goody, OP. Why just have one thread about this when you can have two going at the same time? At least you have changed the tile of THIS thread so it in no way corresponds to the hyperbole of the article. But the article is still fundamentally flawed by it's poor understanding of the science. Too large of a calorie…
  • That's my dream too! Want to be partners? Oh, and buy lots of fast cars.
