So are you saying that we shouldn't bother waiting for science to show that aspartame is safe? Just go ahead and eat it all now? There have been many advances in "throwing things" technology throughout our history. From rocks and spears to catapults to bullets and missiles. Science allows us to predict better where they…

The protective gear thing is an issue of dose and context. Working with gallons of concentrated product is not the same as ingesting residual amounts. Spending days spraying with aerosol-ized product is not the same as ingesting trace amounts on a piece of fruit occasionally.

Protein is insulinogenic, possibly more so than carbohydrates. See here for example: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20060863 This isn't to say aspartame is insulinogenic. I would doubt it, just because the amounts ingested are so low compared to a high protein meal.

So, are simply supposed to sit around and wait until science can answer every single question before we do anything? Thing is, science isn't simply the best tool we have for understanding the world around us (including our own bodies), it is the ONLY tool we have for doing so. And while we probably never will know…

Yes. Eat them. Eat food. There are no magical benefits to juicing.

If you are afraid you have already lost muscle mass from the prior VLCD, then don't make that mistake again! For a controlled and maintainable FAT loss, you should really do 3 things: 1. Eat the maximum (not minimum!) number of calories you can that gives you a reasonable rate of loss (1-2 lb per week, depending on how…

Boxer briefs. Or shorts with a built in insert.

Step 1: Insulin Resistance. Step 2: Pancreas cannot produce enough insulin to keep up. That paper suggests that extended elevated levels of free fatty acids in the blood are the primary cause of insulin resistance. At a calorie surplus, that FFA is deposited as adipose tissue (fat) some of which will be visceral (around…
-
Conclusion from that paper: "Pancreatic fat is negatively associated with insulin secretion in subjects with IGT/IFG and, therefore, might represent an additional pathogenetic factor leading to beta-cell dysfunction." Negatively associated =/= causative. Plus the pancreas secretes insulin - other cells in the body have…

+1. Do what you enjoy. If you hate running, you don't have to do it! If you feel a need for some cardio (and it certainly has its benefits so I'd say it worth incorporating in some way), how about 10-15 minutes of HIIT on an elipitcal instead? It'll be better on your ankle too, probably.

But don't they just cleave the lactose (into galactose and glucose) to make it lactose free? Probably worse for a diabetic.

I would imagine that a Canadian cow isn't that much different than an American cow. Except for the accent.

Does it actually make your blood sugar skyrocket? I'm only prediabetic, but I have no problems with milk.

Well, I just signed up for my first half in over 25 years! The race is in December. I plan to carry on lifting 3 times per week (Starting Strength) and getting in ~2 runs a week over the summer, then ramp up the miles in the fall. I figure being stronger will only help me to be faster. I'm in maintenance and have no plans…

Meh. Sounds like an angry rant from someone who couldn't actually figure out how to use something like MFP to lose weight. A calorie counter is just a tool. You still have to do the hard work yourself.

Current science says that the only fats to really watch out for are the partially hydrogenated ones, due to the trans fats. Low fat "diet" foods are generally not the way to go, as they replace fat with sugar to keep it tasting good. Nuts are a good source of fats (and some protein). Going over on fat isn't bad, as long as…

A female, new to strength training, without steroids, in a calorie SURPLUS while lifting heavy will be able to gain around 0.25 lb of muscle every week. http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/muscle-gain/general-philosophies-of-muscle-mass-gain.html On a deficit, that number will be less. And, as you reach your maximum genetic…
-
You are kind of on the right track! While in a deficit, your body is likely to use muscle proteins to help fill the gap. Eating 1 g protein per lb lean body mass per day and doing some sort of resistance training will help your body hang onto the protein in the muscle. This way, any weight lost will be fat, not muscle. It…
-
No. The protein % here is basically a minimum. Unless you have kidney problems, you can't really get too much protein. More protein helps retain muscle while on a calorie deficit too. Around 1 g per lb lean body mass is a good number to shoot for, especially if your are physically active too.

Some nutrients are made more available when veggies are cooked, as some of the fiber is broken down, releasing them. Others are destroyed by the cooking process. Doesn't change the calorie count though.
-
To answer the question in the title: as many as get you to your goal calories. However, I would say that at 20 g of protein, you are too low there. A female should be getting at least 46 g per day of protein, probably (at 55 kg) you could aim for 80 g. Protein has the advantage of being more satiating than many carbs too,…

Only if you burn the cake! If you take everything out of the pan that went into it, it has the same amount of potential energy (calories). The only time there will be a difference is in cooking something like bacon or ground beef, where the fat renders and can change the calorie count depending on if you strain it off or…

I certainly don't think that is a fair comment in this case. Lipidystrophy can be caused by the insulin injections, and can cause the body to reject further doses. Sometimes, people see a plastic surgeon for reason other than vanity...

Did he give you any specific reasons for omitting meat, other than "it helps weight loss"? While one can definitely go vegetarian and be healthy and lose weight, it isn't required. Is there something about meat that exacerbates the lipoatrophy? I'd ask him for more details! The low carb thing I can see for the diabetes.…

Joe Bonamassa - The Great Flood. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-7drgQYvBM The song itself is just plain raw emotion! But the first time I heard it, I was driving to my very first ever counselling session after just finding out my (now ex) wife was cheating on me. I had to pull over. Still brings a lump to my throat.

I like they way you think :drinker:

Livestrong is a link farm. They put up anything just to get clicks. Not a reliable source for health information. Lets take that claim of the citric acid clearing up calcium stones and deposits. It is true, in fact, that citric acid is tested in this way in medicine. Here is one such example:…

That's better. <- to show I'm not angry You can have whatever opinion you like. Some opinions, however, go against everything we know about science and how the human body (and lemons) work. In other words, opinions can be WRONG. Although claiming lemons have all these health benefits rises to the level of Not Even…

Belly fat is caused by fat, which is caused by eating at a calorie surplus, not toxins. So even if you could detox with lemon or mint or ginger (you can't) it would do nothing for the fat. To lose belly fat, eat less and move more. Drink [lemon/ginger/mint/cinnamon/whatever] water if it tastes good to you. Staying hydrated…

The claim (from the woo-mongers) is that lemon magically raises the pH of BLOOD, not the stomach. Although how a small amount of lemon juice is going to affect the pH of my carbonate-buffered blood is beyond me. In fact, it would be very worrying if true, as I like my blood to be at the correct pH (hence why we have the…
