  • This. Although my DS and I were just discussing that military life can make that a bit more challenging to find someone who's a partner rather than a dependapotamus. Get creative, and maybe consider joining some local activity groups via Meetup as a way to meet new people w/similar interests?
  • Oh, hey. That'll change your weight, too. And your workouts will need to be modified...see, it's good you haven't found her.
  • IN. For bacon, ice cream, & caramel. Also for the lovely trainwreck of passive aggressiveness. Because we should all have identical definitions of "support" and it MUST be offensive to assertively state what your feelings re: friending are in your own profile. YMMV. PLUR. Fer dog's sake, IDIC, people. *off to re-write…
  • HaHA! Steady rain and 41 degrees. Gotta be outside! Dropped 8 minutes off my time for hilly 3.85 out-n-back :-)
  • What was the first thing you changed to get healthy? Recognized that medical issues needed to be tackled FIRST to be successful. What was the hardest for you to change? Being willing to put time/energy into thinking about healthy eating & exercising. It's so remedial, and I'm in my 40s and an experienced athlete. what is…
  • Overall wellness IS the answer. Yet you are hinging your advice on only one point: calorie in/out, and then extrapolating it into our bodies accurately signaling hunger. Which they frequently DON'T. You don't have to have an eating disorder to have issues with appetite. It's relatively (frighteningly) easy to learn to…
  • Thank you, everyone. I'm gonna keep everything the same for another couple of weeks before tweaking. Today I took a long nap and then discovered that even if the scale isn't moving: 1. A formerly short skirt now falls well below the knee. 2. Pants acquired when suit pants were too tight, now fit with 2 pairs of fleece long…
  • Sure do! It's been really interesting - some foods like salad greens I'd been measuring out too little w/measuring cups, while mayo surprised me by being a much more generous portion when weighed vs. measuring spoon! Less hassle: it is easier for me to throw things onto the scale than to use measuring cups/spoons. By FAR.…
  • Just to bump this article, and note that I'm 44 now, and when at healthy weight (just a few years ago), my face still looks quite young. Mind you, I've got the visage of a hobbit: relatively rounded & cheerful looking. And as the article notes, the impact to rounder face shapes is less unpleasant. So to the commenters who…
  • It's fantastic your wife is supporting your efforts! And wow, forty pounds since November. That's really impressive. Looking at the quote above, why not spend a little time picking at that? Maybe talk it over with your wife or a close friend? I'd bet there's a bigger picture behind your repeated gains, and it might be…
  • You can do this! And the best part of MFP is that it really is (as another commenter said) as simple as logging your food and starting to move a bit more. It's a useful thing for your teenage son, too - not that he has to do it. Anything you learn about eating healthIER (start small!), he's gonna see. My son is now 24, and…
  • This. Also, 2 other notes: 1. "a whole year" - yeah. Otoh, if you don't start sometime... (I struggle with this too sometimes. Right now I'm doing a 15-wk challenge, and when I calculated my best-case end weight, I was really unhappy. Because it's not what I want to see after that much time and effort. So I'm focusing on…
  • Not surprised the numbers are a bit odd. There's more medical history on how I got there, but I like to look at it as just a starting point, with *most* of the issues resolved or in progress. Food logging is almost OCD quality, and I have been losing weight: ~10 lbs in 4 weeks...so I'll sit tight. Patience is backordered…
  • If you google for Deva stylists in your area, you stand a GREAT chance of getting an excellent cut. Two in the SF bay area are: Mary Hill at Fabu in Campbell is superb. Teresa Callen in Palo Alto/Mtn View is also very good, but veeeeery slow (I don't always have the luxury of multi-hour salon visits!). I'm sure there are…
  • I think I will give it at least 1 more week before tweaking. Intellectually I know it's not 100% linear, but when stressed, I like to DO something to bring things (anything) back "under control" - and if it's difficult/painful, so much the better. Thank you for the sanity check :flowerforyou:
  • Interesting, and I'll keep it in mind. Averaging TDEE may be the way to go at some point (most likely when I settle back into a routine). Good to know, and congratulations on your success so far!
  • Do you eat back your exercise calories? Or are does the 1400-1700 include them?
  • Woohoo! A balmy 41 degrees, and lots of slush/mud (first "mud run" of 2014?)! Was able to ditch the crampons & really stretch my legs :-)
  • Physically, I feel fine - the bump from 1200 to 1310 made a world of difference. And I do eat back exercise calories (mostly) :-)
  • If you search "max heart rate" or "maximum heart rate" on these forums, you'll see a lot of people have this experience. Often noticed when first using their new heart rate monitor, too! For your own peace of mind, great idea to have a doctor's check-up. That said, the 220-age equation is old and doesn't apply to everyone.…
  • Remembered this post while sulking over the scale today. I'm looking at 1 lb for this week, not the 2-3 I'm targeting. Your description of how it feels just tickled. So, thank you! :flowerforyou:
  • You might find it really uplifting (seriously) to google some of those old Nike ads. The entire "Just Do It" campaign was designed to move Nike from being a "shoes for elite athletes" company to the Nike of today - one that makes shoes for everyone: athlete to aspiring couch potato. The ads show that no matter what your…
  • Sorry, I *didn't* get the context right off (my head may be on sideways this morning). I do know that sort of thread, and wow, kinda in my happy place re: humanity today. I figure the OPs scamper off to implement some kind of more accurate measuring than whatever they've been using. Would it be nice if they responded,…
  • Fair enough. So OP, if all you want to know is how many people are doing it, there you go. Why is there a vocal minority? Or what are the pros/cons of weighing vs measuring cup vs eyeball? ... 'nother story.
  • Nope. Didn't see the thread, but when someone posts re: stalling or regaining, one of the most common and first-asked questions is "are you weighing your food to ensure accurate measurement?" So, observationally, yes. Most MFP folks are weighing their food.
  • Onward! Getting off the sanded-ice streets & onto unpaved, unplowed rec trail was much more knee-friendly :-)
  • EXACTLY! (although mine hung around for another 18 years or so. Persistent buggers.) And yeah, you sure do notice if you have them.
  • This! Although I'm putting off that expense until these wear out (I'll be really excited - kind of a goal): http://www.32north.com/play/10-stabilicers-lite-i.html I wear them over hiking boots or running shoes, depending on weather. We've been down to -20, presently ice w/sand where roads used to be. Time to go off-road,…
