  • Ha! Scooby to the rescue: http://scoobysworkshop.com/gain-muscle-lose-fat/
  • HA! I wondered if anyone else noticed the mayo thing! My butter/yogurt spread is the same. Two very happy surprises :drinker:
  • No. Not definitively true. My RMR was measured to be 1100 cals - which is substantially lower than normal. Does that mean everyone with hypo or even my numbers is the same? NO. Some folks may be even lower. Others higher. However, most hypo folks DO have a lower RMR than the average population - and even medicated to…
  • You ladies look great! And who the hell decided being strong=manly? There's just so much wrong with that physically, psychologically, and culturally.
  • I see how you mean, and *I* wasn't very clear myself :embarassed: What irked me was the lack of clarity as to what "like a bird" means. When your metabolism's low, there's so little room for error that I think it deserves quantification - and for that matter, measurement. Her endo's response was way better than what you…
  • Arthritis sure doesn't help :-( But WELCOME BACK! Feel free to add me, and regardless, if you haven't read this MFP classic, do! http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/1080242-a-guide-to-get-you-started-on-your-path-to-sexypants Also (and I'm sorry about the title, not calling you obese!), this is another really…
  • No no - although that's a common misunderstanding. Literal pie. 3.14 is the Pi Time Factor that causes the added sugar to change molecular shape & chemical formula while remaining sucrose. That change is what lets the body see it as pie and thus direct fat & toxin response. It's a very complex biochemical process. :drinker:
  • You should have your RMR medically measured. Simple & non-invasive. That way you can figure out a *reasonable* caloric deficit, based on YOUR individual number. Get your measured RMR, then go here: http://scoobysworkshop.com/calorie-calculator/ And of course read this MFP classic if you haven't already:…
  • *crickets* really?
  • Unless you consume them within 3.14 minutes after a vigorous fasted workout. Then your body recognizes the added sugar as pie, and since pie is a good thing, begins to immediately shed fat and toxins.
  • Hi - I love my Salomon Discovery GTX boots. They've been taking me 3-7 racewalking AND jogging miles each week in snowy New Hampshire. No shin splints, no knee issues, and my dodgy right ankle has been nicely protected. Warm, dry feet. --Fire trail --Singletrack --Snowshoeing (with & without the snowshoes *wry grin*)…
  • Foster Farms Chicken Corndogs - not NEARLY as bad as I'd thought! Also, a weighing surprise: the weighed serving of both mayo and butter were MUCH more generous than I'd guessed using the old eyeball method. :embarassed: I do try to eat somewhat healthy, but the surprises have been mostly in the junk food.
  • Well THAT was interesting. I'm tracking data using 2 systems: A-uppity Omron "smart" scale and B-tape measure & equations. I know from past experience that while bodyfat #s may not be accurate using the tape measure, it does seem to be darned good at capturing relative changes - for me. Thoroughly enjoying the absolute…
  • Erased reply: old thread and user deactivated.
  • As others have noted - start gently! And if you do feel pain in your knees, back off - but ALSO know that you can try again when some of the weight has come off! (For example, while many people can run successfully @ 200+ lbs, my knees are absolutely not on board with that. So I'm currently racewalking for another 15 lbs…
  • And the science backs you on that! (ETA: although eating when hungry doesn't work for everyone - it's YMMV)
  • flaxseed & toasted unsalted sunflower seeds! I did once try adding my favorite vanilla protein powder (which is ok mixed w/just water imnsho and a thing of joy in smoothies)...truly repulsive. Never again *shudders*
  • So much love for this thread. Totally thought about it while engaging my own scale today, with its ideas re: bf%, RMR, body age, etc. Pleased to see you got some better numbers, and hope the scale has learned its lesson!
  • And the POINT of this peer-reviewed journal article (which reviews many other peer-reviewed studies) is essentially: No conclusive evidence. Do what works best for YOU. At most, there *may* be a *small* advantage to post-workout refueling for those trying to gain muscle mass. Small, and again, a theoretical advantage.
  • Funny you should post this - it's what I blogged about earlier today. Sure do, and had to think about what all is REALLY going on. That let me figure out how to be positive in a realistic way. Because I'm not small, and I'm not going to drop this weight in the next week or even month. http://bit.ly/1msviuD
  • This list has seen me snark this before...my endo told me he's also hypo, same #s as me. Yet, he doesn't take anything for it and just "pushes through" - my point being that endos are sadly not the reliable source of wisdom that they damned well ought to be. The directions to you were ridiculously unclear. I strongly…
  • Down 7.2 lbs. Pleased about that :-) There are now 6-milers in amongst the 3-4 milers in my walking log. I'm getting faster, too, and the long hill on one loop is now hard, but doable without stopping. I'm feeling better!
  • Fantastic article - thank you! I thought the most interesting paragraph was the one below - mentioning the protein/carb combo another commenter noted. Also, while the authors evaluated the evidence for impact on BOTH body composition and muscle mass/gain, they seemed to conclude that only rate of muscle mass gains are…
  • Okay, so the only activity you're mentioning enjoying* is walking - do that! There are plenty of MFPrs who've lost a ton of weight doing just walking. (Not that I'm dissing jogging, just pointing out it's not mandatory). You'll see improvement in your speed and how you feel at the top of hills. *That might have sounded a…
  • We have the Bloom County weight loss series of comic strips taped to the refrigerator. From when Opus the penguin was trying to lose weight. It reminds me to keep a sense of humor, and really? I've been fit and strong most of my life. Got knocked down badly in recent years, but I'm absolutely confident I'll recover,…
  • You said it exactly right: "I don't want my relationship status (with my boyfriend or anyone else) to determine how I treat myself and my health." You don't ever get a guarantee of how long someone else will be with you. Any one of us could be hit by a bus tomorrow. Which sounds a little morbid, granted. Yet I hope you see…
  • This! And OP, a few weeks ago, my (adult) DD melodramatically wailed and armwaved from the kitchen "All those times I mocked you for using the food scale. OH! How the mighty have fallen!" - as she weighed out whatever she was eating. We had a good laugh. Someday, you and DW may, too!
  • This, exactly! (and nice examples, btw) OP, what does "improved health" mean to you? You can do this!
  • Heavy barbell rows are somehow soothing (you said favorite, not best or most comprehensive!)
