I just kept on cruising past the finish line two months ago and am now at three quarters of the way from my goal weight to my lowest since age 20, during which time I was almost always at my regular weight, so that's my goal. An exception was the last few years, but no longer. Sticking to my calorie level and keeping…

Be in the room when the doctor discusses his annual physical. Focus on out of range results like prediabetes.

Yeah, I don't know why they do that either. Too much trouble for me. I start eating in the morning when I feel like it, and by the end of dinner, everything has usually fallen into place. If it's 500 calories more or less, it evens itself out the next day!

"The change is interesting, as is our ever-increasing longevity--something that scientists think may now reverse as a result of the global obesity epidemic." WHAT KILLS US: The Leading Causes Of Death From 1900-2010 http://www.businessinsider.com/leading-causes-of-death-from-1900-2010-2012-6?op=1 "The researchers parsed…

How about this one? "Results: Late lunch eaters lost less weight and displayed a slower weight-loss rate during the 20 weeks of treatment than early eaters." Timing of food intake predicts weight loss effectiveness http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23357955

Why do you think so? Your exhaustive answer is most appreciated!

I read the first chapter of Salt Sugar Fat a while back and look forward to more of it. You'll be happy to know then that "while most people support nutrition guidelines to help Americans make better choices along with the posting of calorie counts on restaurant menus, nearly six in ten of those surveyed opposed unhealthy…

Being a grocery store snob, you naturally shop at places that cater to your health. I don't see a whole lot of junk in people's carts at say Whole Foods or Trader Joe's, and so you don't really feel like snob because you are surrounded by people like you. Sure, some food is processed, but I don't remember any microwave…

Haha, modern day wifely submission?

Since you (but not OP) brought up weight loss, how about this recent study? As you hopefully start to eat more, be aware that a higher meal frequency translates into more insulin spikes. When your insulin level is high, you do not burn fat, not until your insulin level is lowered, which takes time after a meal. When you allow for time between meals, maintaining low levels of insulin allows your…

Why are some people hungry before bed? Don't they socialize during the day, haha? But seriously, why? If you work 9-5 and it's a preference to eat up until bedtime, what's the reasoning? Do you eat more frequently? Is part of it stress or boredom? What would happen if you didn't keep your mouth going? In the past people…

I know the feeling. The other day I went to a dinner buffet and stuffed myself so I could hardly walk away. I fell asleep, but didn't sleep well, woke up in the middle of night and had my first breakfast. Just before dawn the second breakfast, by eight o'clock the third. All of them packed with fiber, but no go. I wasn't…

That's a tough choice as each flavor of "wifely submission" has its pros and cons. But given the wealth of feedback put before us, who knows maybe you (and your husband, diet-wise) really can have your cake and eat it too.

Yes. Few can eat more than five oranges at a time, but a quart of juice holds twenty two of them, and then what do you do? Not easy to sustain it either. As someone said by the end, "He lost the weight. I hope it continues."

How do you forget something (snacking)? Just think of something else (peppermint tea).

1. I'm not hungry when I don't eat. 2. Bean counting: things, not life.

My early twenties included working the night shift a couple of times a week. I don't recall any particular downside to it, but when you're that age, anything comes easy. So given this thread some reading helped me warm up to the concept. A very real aspect is sunlight vs artificial light: "Working and eating late at…

Nope. But you're welcome to document your assertions. Just once will do, I take it.

Let me first say that belly fat is not visible by the outside skin, but is the fat wrapped around your internal organs by your belly. "Dr. Joel Fuhrman: Well, let me just say that anyone who makes that claim, that their diet can target midsection fat and burn belly fat, or something like that, take that book and just throw…

Eight hours more often than seven. Nine more often than six. Jillian Michaels, a fitness guru, wrote in one of her books, might have been Slim for Life, that if she had the choice between six hours of sleep and a workout on one side and eight hours of sleep on the other, she would not hesitate to pick the eight hours of…

"The End of Diabetes How can a type 2 diabetic lower high glucose levels, lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, lose weight and not need to take drugs such as insulin and sulfonylureas which cause weight gain? Yes, go to an Indian buffet for dinner like I did today (or what works for you). Tasty food, but I'm so stuffed it'll probably be well into next week before my stomach has released all of its pressure and I can once again set my eyes on a meal table, lol. Not that I ate all that much really, being at 1300 net for months…

Bring processed food to a minimum, and your hunger goes away between meals and before bed.

My experience following such an energy conscious meal pattern is that I'm now three quarters of the way. Not from my starting point to my goal weight, but from my goal weight to my low record as an adult! Still, weight is but a byproduct of health. Eat real food, and everything falls into place. As cravings go away,…

Countless glasses throughout the day. Kidneys, your waste filter and more, don't function well without enough water, in which case the liver takes over, and since it can't metabolize fat while doing it, you get fatter. Researchers have found that drinking six cups of cold water a day can raise resting metabolism by about…

Yes, it certainly does! "Willpower is lower when you're sleepy," explains study author Kelly Baron, Ph.D., a clinical health psychologist at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. "So if you're eating in the middle of the night, you're more likely to overeat and make poor food choices." Can You…
