  • Good advice here, though I understand about not wanting to ruin your hearing aids! When I started jogging, which was before I discovered C25K, I had all kinds of muscle aches. The only remedy I had was time. I took more rest days between runs to let the aches calm down. Once my fitness level improved, I didn't have so many…
  • Wow, that's an excellent article, vardaeml. I'm posting it to my wall so it'll cross-post to my FB wall. Thanks!
  • I have a friend in the Chicago area who has complained about the wet, mild summer ruining his normal summer gardening. Would you happen to live in the same area? Living on the Texas Gulf Coast, I would say that I qualify as an expert on both heat and humidity. I try to time my runs around 7 or 7:30pm so that I don't have…
  • 45 here. Feel free to friend me! I'd especially love to hear from you if you're new to running or rowing. I'm about to finish W6 of the C25K app, and I'm just getting started with rowing and loving it. I may even feel better now than I did in my 30's. Wow, did I just say that???
  • Great reading up on everyone's progress! Woot! Woot! So many are doing so well! I finished W6D2 today. That second 10 minutes was a little tough, but I wasn't gonna quit, no matter what! What's more, I was pleased to discover my pace was slightly improved again. Will probably slow it down for W6D3, though. Ya, I know, how…
  • "It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great." Sorry, I couldn't resist the League of Their Own quote!
  • Well... what is your goal? Yes, I think this is doable, though I am no expert. You could train for the 5K 3X per week and weight train 2X per week, making sure to take in plenty of protein in your diet. When you go to the gym to lift, leave dainty at the door. You don't have to lift more than that unless you just want to,…
  • I lingered on W3 and W4 for a while. I'm on W6 now. I'd be interested in hearing other's take on this, but here is my opinion. Right now, you're in this place where you're training not only your body -- your legs and your lungs -- but also your mind. We get used to that voice in our heads that tells us we can't do it…
  • :drinker:
  • I use the Endomondo app, which is linked to MFP and automatically records my workouts for me. Two posters say they use the C25K app to record distance? Is that the free app? I didn't know it did that. Guess I should look it over more! Oh man! It doesn't get any better than that!
  • On running days, I also weight train my upper body. On non-running days, I row on the machine at the gym.
  • I finished W5D3 yesterday! I remember a few weeks ago, when I peeked ahead to see what everybody was talking about, I thought, 20 minutes! Holy crap, will i be able to run 20 minutes straight by then? Well, I did. I think somewhere between running 5 minutes and 8 minutes nonstop, I conquered my breathing, and from there,…
  • What an awesome post, m1311! (If someone thinks this should go to a different thread, please speak up. In the meantime, I'm continuing it here.) I am lucky enough to go to a club where the equipment is kept up very well. That said, you mentioned that if you don't feel the handle pull from the catch, then the bungy may need…
  • Well, I wrote my post, and then decided it would probably be better as a blog entry. At any rate, I completed W5D1 last night, and it went very well. I'm ready to move to W5D2!
  • Thanks, Howard! I followed your advice and reviewed the technique video on the Concept 2 website. Turns out the machine at our gym is a Concept2, so yay! I did about 15 minutes pretty slow, just figuring out my form, and then I did 30 minutes, giving it some pretty good effort. Whew! My legs and butt are gonna be so sore…
  • Excellent advice from vardaeml. Go slow. Go slower. I am slow. Ssslllooowww. This heat is brutal. The humidity is a killer. Go as slow as you can without falling back to a walk. The point is to keep moving. That's it. When fall gets here and it's running season again, you'll be amazed by how much easier it is.
  • Complete newb here! This group looks awesome! It's obvious how much many of you love the sport. I think I sat on a row machine at the gym once about 10 years ago, but I didn't know what I was doing, so I got off and returned to the dreadmill. Now I'm 45 and getting back into running, and I'm looking for a good workout to…
  • Oh, wow! You rock! Thanks so much for sharing your amazing story!
  • I'm curious about your age. I'm 45. When I was in my 20's, I had problems with confrontation, too, but as I've aged, had kids, gotten busy, etc..., I've come to the conclusion that life's too short to put up with people like this. Good for you for standing up for yourself and demanding your right to be left alone. And that…
  • What if you don't watch TV?
  • I was glad to see the input from some of the more seasoned athletes who appear to agree that an HRM isn't very useful for this purpose. (I think they are more useful for someone who has a heart condition and needs to keep their HR down.) I gauge the intensity of my workout on my breathing. If I can sing an aria, then I'm…
  • Giving this a bump, cuz I loved it!
  • Nothing new to contribute here -- I'm with those who say repeat the one day. You can do it!
  • When I had lost in the neighborhood of 65 lbs, my sister-in-law FINALLY told me that I looked good. I mean, come on, I'd gone from a size 22 to a size 14 (I'm 5'10"), and she couldn't say anything before then? Good thing I wasn't doing it for her, or else I might have given up! I might've killed my husband, though, if he…
  • I admire anybody who runs, especially any adult who is new to the sport, because I SUCK at it and find myself to be easily intimidated by those sprinters at the track, especially that gray-headed retired guy who lapped me, what, twice? Three times??? At any rate, I did once manage a 5K several years ago, and I have been…
  • I'm 45 and need to lose 30lbs. I joined mfp last fall and saw a small measure of success, but then the holidays came! I gained back what little I lost, plus a few more! Waaaaa! I've determined that I have to get serious about this, and I would love to have some Weight Loss Buddies. Please feel free to add me!
