  • Still trying to wrap my brain around kale. I love it as kale chips (tossed with olive oil and sea salt and toasted in the oven until crispy), but so far have yet to acquire a taste for it raw. My all-time, will NOT eat food is lima beans. Dunno how they rank on the health scale, but I've always disliked them.
  • Yes! When I have a ton of calories to spare, I usually go for half an avocado, sliced on a piece of toast. Super yummy and has lots of good fats and nutrients in it! And takes up some of my extra calories so I don't end up eating junk to fill in the gap.
  • I think it's all personal preference. I met my husband online five years ago and I didn't agree to meet him until we'd been talking through the whole summer. I also am not a big phone person, so we just did IMing back and forth, primarily. Some things I would suggest thinking about are: 1) What part of your profile drew…
  • I'm 5'3" and my goal is 130, as well.
  • These are two recipes that I've used many times and LOVE: http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/2007/12/chocolate-orange-cake.html http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/2006/04/raspberry-chocolate-cake.html Absolutely delicious and no weird ingredients, and you could substitute regular yogurt for the soy yogurt in the orange cake.…
  • Oh, and check out blog.fatfreevegan.com -- she has a category for gluten-free stuff, and ALL of her recipes have nutrition information AND most of it is low-fat and low-calorie. Her "Skinny Figgy Bars" are delicious! I've made them with Bob's Red Mill gluten-free oats, to share with my gluten-intolerant co-workers. Nom nom…
  • I don't have much to say that would help, but I suggest checking out Manifest Vegan -- it's a blog full of vegan and gluten-free recipes, and all the ones I've tried have been delicious! (Her super old stuff is not gluten-free, as she found that out within the past couple of years, so keep that in mind.) Otherwise, it's an…
  • That may or may not be what I have. I buy it in bulk from my local co-op, but I assume that if it was pastry flour, it would be labeled as such. Mine says "fine whole wheat" and doesn't have a super heavy texture, really. But that may be because I'm used to it. I used it for some (decidedly unhealthy) cupcakes last weekend…
  • Happened to me and continues to happen! I used to LOVE canned green beans, then I made my own cooked green beans from garden-fresh beans and they were, of course, tasty. Having missed those a little while back, I picked up a can of beans at the store, thinking I would get my fix. NOPE! Super salty, and like you said, they…
  • I love Oh She Glows! It's on my list of top blogs! Hi everyone! I'm vegan and happy to have more veg friends! I don't have the perfect diet but am constantly trying to keep things well-balanced and varied, and am always willing to try new things. Unless they involve lima beans.
  • Graphic and web designer for a smallish company which creates marketing tools for and helps brand real estate agents.
  • And sweating from exercise feels SO much better than sweating from the sun or a sauna. I feel proud of my exercise sweat! But maybe I'm weird like that ... could be, I hear you.
  • I found a list of ingredients for the different flavors they offer: http://www.glutensmart.com/wfdressnut.html Thank you to the OP for sharing, but I think will pass.
  • My question would then be: what in the world is it made out of?
  • The jury's still out when it comes to cheat days, for me. I think they work well for some people, but so far I haven't decided. When I lost my first chunk of weight (about 30lbs), I never had cheat days and didn't even think to do it, and did quite well. This time around, I'm dealing with weekly potlucks on Wednesday…
  • Would love to be friends!
  • Edamame, quinoa, tempeh, seitan, lentils, beans, etc. Try to get as much protein from whole food sources as you can. This page has a decent list of non-meat protein ideas, about halfway down: http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/protein.htm
  • It's threads like this that make me proud to be part of this community! Look at all of these amazingly supportive people! So awesome! That said, the "real world" can be tough. As I've been on my journey off and on, I've had people in my life who make those annoying comments, too. The biggest culprit is my MIL (who I think…
  • I would say yes, keep enjoying your fruit. Like everything, it should be eaten in moderation. But don't forget that fruits contain all sorts of vitamins that your body needs to keep balanced. I usually have berries in my oatmeal for breakfast, maybe a banana as a snack sometime during the day, and often an apple as an…
  • Hi Diane! I've found that being active on here totally helps keep the motivation up. Feel free to add me, if you like! I'm on the path of losing 80 lbs, so we're fairly close.
  • Dunno if anyone's interested, but I've recently fallen in love with this recipe. I guess it's technically not hummus, as there's no tahini or garlic, but it's delicious! And I have a thing for rosemary... Rosemary-Chickpea Dip 2 teaspoons olive oil 1 cup chopped green onions 2 (15 1/2-ounce) cans chickpeas (garbanzo…
  • Welcome to MFP, Cat! I totally hear you on the veggie thing -- I'm vegan and I know for certain that I don't get enough veggies. (I have too much fun baking vegan cookies!) I'm trying to expand my tastes, though ... one food item at a time. I'm a work in progress, but aren't we all?

  • Part of me wants to say MFP, because you've entered your stats like height and weight, but you can (usually) enter your weight into the machine and then it tracks your heart rate ... hmm. I usually go by my heart rate monitor, since it knows a bit more more of my stats. I just did 30 minutes on the elliptical tonight, and…
  • You look incredible! Whenever you need that reminder of how far you've come (as we sometimes need), just come back to this post and look at your photos, and then read all of the comments from other MFP members who you've inspired. I do that from time to time, to keep myself going, and I haven't lost near as much as you!…
  • Voted! And very well said! It hurts me too, to see people saying things like that about themselves. You can only improve upon yourself if you love yourself enough to do it. Hating yourself ... just doesn't work. If I go down that path, I end up on a super bumpy road and end up falling off the wagon. Kudos to you for a…
  • Not sure when this original piece was written, but it's since been debunked that you need to have a complete combination of protein within a single meal, but rather within a day. And for most people with a varied diet, that's more than easy enough to accomplish.
  • Protein can be found in varying amounts in just about anything. My mid-morning snack of an apple has a gram of protein; not much, but it's there. People always associate protein with meat and other animal products, but it's super easy to find elsewhere, as well.
  • I have that problem, too! The only thing that consistently works for me is to religiously measure my food. And I can't eat it if I don't measure and track it. Otherwise, it's bigger portions and back for seconds. Whenever I measure and track my food, I always lose weight, even if it's in small increments, as is sometimes…
  • Have you considered trying out a low-fat vegan diet? My dad is 62 and a little over a year ago he adopted a low-fat vegan diet and has since dropped from three blood-pressure medications to one (or he might be fully off, now), has greatly reduced his cholesterol, and he's been losing weight like there's no tomorrow! It's…
  • What a transformation! Keep up the amazing work! I'm sure you'll reach the rest of your goals!
