I saw that too. It is intriguing for sure. But, there were higher drop-outs by the 6 month review (in both groups I seem to remember, but more in the break group?)... I didn't really dig into the statistics (and this results was outside of the experimental design of the study, I believe), but for me I'd take that as a…

Total metabolic burn comes from many things- bmr, neat, and exercise are how my fitness pal breaks them up, so that's why I used that term. That is not the term the author used and maybe somewhat broader than the part of the metabolism they are talking about. The total metabolism went down more because the break group lost…

The scientific study is freely available online. I found it by following a link in one of the popular press articles. Basically they hypothesized that alternating between dieting and maintenance would prevent some of the metabolic slow down of dieting. It was not about the pyschological aspects of compliance. They had one…

Yeah, found the same thing. I used to log my rides via MFP and got 1200-1500 cal rides. Then I got a power meter on my bike and found they were really 300-500 cals. I let strava sync the values to MFP (the 300-500 cal) instead of manually adding them. I'm not really sure what @ashliedelgado is saying about the "jump" with…

Yeah, my tracker also only give negative calories. The more I exercise, the bigger the negative adjustment gets. It is totally demoralizing. I turned off negative adjustments because I could never get it to work. I actually ended up in a really bad place because the negative adjustments were reducing my calories to 1200…

I think some high blood pressure meds also mess with water and electrolyte balance. I highly recommend that you point this medicine out to whatever doctor you talk to next about your sodium issues. This is something else that changed recently and may have contributed to things going very wrong when you increased your water…

I tried it and hated it. I picked it for the similar reasons as you- I thought I could do it with dumbbells and the equipment in the gym I had (also apt gym). However, there was still equipment I needed that I didn't have access to (in first month of BB program. I have not tried the other two programs. Also looking at the…

@bwmalone Here is the 0.3x BWX miles. http://www.runnersworld.com/weight-loss/how-many-calories-are-you-really-burning As pointed out above, it is net calories. Total calories matches with your table (verywell), at least for the entry I tried. Total calories is 0.53* BW* miles. 1 hour at 3 mph (so 3 miles) at 100 pounds…

If your trainer has recommended a particular macro split, you can override MFP's default and enter your trainer's values. It might be easier for you if you set that up. You do this in the goals tab.

I use a withings scale (now Nokia brand). I like that it automatically syncs with mfp and other places. It measures bodyfat too. Like many other health markers it is easy to get wildly different numbers if you change measurement conditions (time of day, hydration status, etc.). Same is true of weight too though. I find…

@TeacupsAndToning Some bikes measure your power output in Watts. You can convert Watts to calories based on some assumptions about the efficiency of power transfer. It is generally considered a pretty accurate way of getting at calories burned. (And certainly better that using MFPs vastly inflated calorie burns for biking…

I'll be honest, this response really rubs me the wrong way. I shared my experiences, and you seem to be telling me that I both followed the diet wrong (that I should have ignored the section on sodium and potassium) AND I should have consulted my doctor. The DASH diet sodium recommendations are typical- 2300 mg. Nothing…

I thought the primary result of the DASH diet was to reduce blood pressure not cholesterol? The NIH resources are very good, so I would read those materials. I personally found the diet was too low sodium and the increased potassium wasn't sufficient for my electrolyte balance. I followed it for 6 months (?) And felt like…

Yeah, that's what I've always used it for, though I usually omit it because I rarely have it. I mostly make little meringue cookies so the stability of the foam is less important than in a pie. I don't care if they spread a little. Not sure what the benefit is to a sports drink. If it is as a potassium source it seems that…

What is the cream of tartar for? I just use Lite Salt and Raspberry-lemon flavored natural calm. Is there a reason for the 2:1 or 3:1 Na:K ratio other than that is what is found in commercial mixes? The NIH DASH study indicated that over the whole diet a 5:1 K:Na ratio was preferred, so I assumed an electrolyte drink…

I've been working on modified push-ups (from the knees) this month. I'm up to 5 in the morning! I don't have great upper body strength- yet! I'm not sure I can do even the easy challenge- adding a push-up every day seems like a lot. But I'd be willing to try the challenge. Start date is fine with me.

@Maggieba Ha! Ha! I'm on week 3, and have been complaining about the variety in the weigh-in thread. Do you find that you are consistently using your glutes? I'm still finding it very difficult and I am mostly feeling things in my quads and my hamstrings still. I've been doing the activator exercises in the morning daily,…

Also late with the introductions... Name: Louise Age: 40 Height: 5ft 6in Current Weight: 181 lbs (down about 30 lbs from the start of the year!) This is my understanding as well. Babies have high brown fat which keeps them warm because they can't shiver yet. As we grow up and gain the ability to shiver we lose brown fat because we don't need it to regulate our temperature.

I think I read a detailed abstract of that study, but I don't remember where. (Maybe Mark's Daily Apple had a link to pubmed for the actual paper?) Basically, it wasn't nearly as extreme as hanging out in a walk-in freezer. As I recall it was a fairly small group of men (maybe 10?). I seem to recall they were middle aged…

On a paved trail, either bike would be fine. The 700 cc will be faster for less input power from you. If you ever plan to ride other places, the mountain bike gives you more flexibility because it can handle a variety of surfaces. If you decide on a mountain bike, I would recommend only getting the kind with front…

I mostly used my crockpot for cooking dried beans (which I then cooked into something else on the stove or used in salad.) For whatever reason, I found cooking entire recipes/one pot meals in the crockpot lead to everything tasting the same- I even bought a cookbook especially for vegetarian crockpot and nothing I tried…

Thanks for sharing your spreadsheet! It looks really nice. I made my own, and I'm interested in seeing how you did it. It looks like you are using fitting to get average values, I currently just calculate on a week by week basis and then average. I think your implementation looks really nice. Thanks again.

I bike a lot and I never found the default saddle got comfortable. All this stuff about adding mileage and magically adjusting to the hard saddle has not worked for me. I've given it almost a full year on my road bike and am tired of having all my bits go numb at mile 8 and then suffering for the rest of the ride. I bought…

Part of how intuitive eating works is that you cut out emotional eating/mindless eating/ and binging because you are focused on how you feel emotionally and physically. It is a lot of work, as bethanyka says, because you are constantly evaluating how you feel as you eat and how your emotions/physical state are changing…

In the US, you can buy pasteurized eggs both as a liquid or in the shell. It might cost more, but it eliminates the chance of salmonella. Eggs have gotten dramatically safer in the US over the years, particularly in the last decade. The FDA has implemented rules about preventing and monitoring Salmonella in large…

I use sun warrior blend natural. It is veggie based, and has a very neutral taste. I can drink it plain or blended with a little raw ginger with no problem. The vanilla and chocolate flavors have some weird sweetener (though I think it is stevia, not sucralose), and taste horrible in my opinion. If you go to the company's…

I think you've gotten a lot of great advice, but I particularly like the advice to eat items where the estimation error doesn't matter as a base. 4 cups of salad vs. 6 cups, no big deal. Obviously, you cannot eat on salad alone, but it does provide a start. I recommend estimating everything, even though it may not be…
