I have also lost 17 lbs and I can see no changes whatsoever in my appearance or in the fit of my clothes or my stamina. Strange how different people react to things. Maybe my 17 lbs is a much smaller percentage of my total weight than yours is. At the grocery store I picked up 3 five pound sacks of rice just to get a feel…

Some posters seem disturbed by the lack of precision in recording food and exercise. I imagine this is because so many people post questions on here about why they aren't losing as expected and the answer is usually to tighten up their logging. If less precision works for the OP for now, then I say stick with it. If it…

I also looked ahead to what maintenance will be like and I was very disappointed. I have had to change my attitude about long term reality. I now view obesity like any other chronic condition such as asthma. Asthma: A potentially deadly but controllable condition. I have to take meds twice a day for the rest of my life.…

I believe this app will not give you fewer than 1200 or 1000 cals per day no matter what the calculation says. It may be that you cannot safely lose 2lbs a week without becoming malnourished.

Your are absolutely right, of course. I am terrified by Alzheimer's because of the up close view I had of it with my father. That creates the dangerous combination with me of seizing onto any article or hint of progress, but at the same time not having the scientific background to properly evaluate the research. I don't…

I first stumbled onto IF in an article about whether one could fend off Alzheimer's disease in part with dietary changes. The theory was that Alz was associated with insulin resistance in the brain and that IF improved insulin resistance, so maybe it could prevent cognitive decline. I have no idea if this theory is bunk or…

It was the change in diet to whole foods with lots of vegetables and less salt, sugar and sauces that I found unsustainable. I went back to my previous way of eating and just reduced my portions (especially of the sauces) and I'm having success now. So no, my tastes haven't changed.

When my father ( obese, T2D, Alzheimer's, COPD, etc, etc, etc) went into a nursing home he lost weight rapidly. Although the RD gave him a prescribed diet, she became concerned by his sudden loss of appetite and allowed us to bring some home cooked favorite foods to him. Is your mother continuing to gain weight while in…

When I'm in one of those negligent eating modes, it's partly because I stopped planning out my eating. If I have to figure out what to eat on the spot, I'll likely choose poorly. My suggestion is to plan tomorrow's food and pre-log your diary so you know for sure you will be at your calorie goal. Then just follow it like a…

Oh! Thanks! I saw that in a jar of cider vinegar and I thought it was spoiled. Heh. Guess not.

What's the "mother"?

I can usually only burn 300 calories in one hour of exercise, which is only about 14% of my total calorie burn in a day. So you see that my exercise has only a very small relative impact on the weight loss equation. In addition to this, exercise tends to depress my activity level during the rest of the day as well as cause…

I can never understand the compulsion to comment on someone's appearance. Do people presume it's their place to pass judgement on another's body? Certainly criticism is just plain rude, even coming from your own family. But do people really think compliments are universally welcomed, or even appropriate? Personally, I'm…

It was tough to see that scale number when I got on it again after a bad patch, but I really wasn't surprised by it. But since that day, seeing a lower number is making me very happy. By not gritting your teeth and seeing what you weigh now, you are denying yourself that satisfaction. I also am using "test pants". I have a…

Have patience. It's normal for weight loss to vary from one week to another. Just keep going.
-
Nothing unusual is happening to you. Fluid retention and the weight of food still in your system can affect your scale weight day to day and hour to hour. You likely did not lose 10 lbs of fat in the first two weeks, but probably much of it was water weight. Likewise, you probably gained back some water weight on your…

No, just food and fluid retention. Relax, forgive yourself and get back on your program. It's your average intake over time that is important.

OP, you sound unhappy with the way you are eating. Especially when you mention eliminating "yummy" foods and describe the time and effort you put in to remake your whole diet. Maybe your previous way of eating was atrocious but it may not be necessary to change everything all at once. I tried doing what you are when I…

I have noticed the same thing...about women choosing salads at group meals. I always wondered if it was for the sake of appearing to be health conscious. i know that restaurant salads can be as high or higher calorie than other menu items. Your lunch choice may not actually be higher calorie than the salads I don't…

I tend to look at the other heavy women like me. Most of them seem perfectly at ease and happy with themselves and to be having great fun. I wish that for myself almost as much as I wish to be slimmer. I also look at the way women my size dress and it's taught me a lesson. We look best in clothes that actually fit, not…

How can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat?
-
Don't starve yourself. Eat your normal dinner and go over your calorie goal today. It matters more that on average you stay within your limit. You can make up for this over the course of the rest of the week. Lesson learned...plan better next time.

I also am plagued by constipation but only when eating at a deficit. I would swear that I eat exactly the same foods I always ate but smaller portions, yet I get plugged up every once in a while but only when restricting. My scale weight loss stalls for those couple if dsys. I can only conclude that it is related to the…

This may sound gross and weird but some days I chug down orange metamucil in a tall glass of water in place of a snack. It's filling and helps with other...issues.

I wore my fitbit while riding a motorcycle and got 20000 steps!

Different songs at different times. I did my first triathlon some years ago and as I neared the end I felt I was about to expire and was down to walking the last mile. As I neared the finish I heard that Aretha Franklin song "Respect" and I was energized to run the rest of the way in. I sing that song in my head sometimes…

I completely get this because I did this same thing year's ago. I figured that to be on a diet meant eliminating the foods I had heard were fattening like butter and cheese and oils and starchy foods. Only lean protein and vegetables three meals a day. It didn't last long. It make me weak and miserable and I came on these…

I think if you are having to restart it means that you were struggling to keep a grip on discipline. There's nothing wrong with you and you didn't fail. If it was hard for you to stay on your plan, then maybe the plan failed you. Think about what you had the most difficulty with and what would make it easier. You can't…

You are right that age shouldn't be a deterrent. There are things that make it difficult for older people like myself to lose weight that were preventable, like sedentariness and loss of LBM. (And, by the way, thank you for putting this nicely and not being accusatory.) And yes CICO rules. However, we accumulate damage…

At my annual physical, my labs showed that I was headed for some problems and I also had high blood pressure. Dr gave me bp med and mentioned very politely that I could use to lose some weight. Then she set up an appointment to recheck me in 6 months. I'm determined to show her real progress by my next visit. But the big…
