  • Good stuff mate, keep it up!
  • I just had a quick google and found that the British Dietetic Association (http://www.bda.uk.com/) named it the worst celebrity diet for three years running (2010, 2011, 2012) -- now that's funny! :D
  • The idea of a cheat day made sense before it was possible to track your macros so accurately. You can (and will) lose weight eating the foods you love, but just not as *much* as you want. If you've had plenty of the good stuff all day then there's no harm with a bit of chocolate or ice cream or a glass of wine or whatever…
  • I wear cheap shorts and t-shirts to the gym because otherwise my female admirers keep interrupting my workout... Not because I'm a poor student, I swear :D
  • You need to read Starting Strength. The book is a fantastic beginners guide on practical, science-based "form" for the big compound lifts we all know and love.
  • What really gets me is when young girls (and some guys) in their teens are under-eating so that they're quite literally malnourished through their growing years. This can result in a whole host of health problems, not the least of which are stunted growth, metabolic disorders and fertility problems. And I do use the word…
  • If you're really that hungry despite making good food choices (like lean meats, plenty of vegetables) then it may be that your goal is simply too low. Sometimes our bodies are trying to tell us something :) There's no harm in setting the goal a little higher for a few weeks and working it down as the weight comes off and…
  • That's fine. Enjoy your beer--I sure do--but count your calories. Excessive alcohol consumption has serious effects such as the blunted absorption of nutrients but it doesn't seem like you're in that category. Chronic alcohol intake plays with your testosterone and so some say that this can result in body fat being…
  • When we lose weight we're really trying to burn fat and maintain muscle mass. To lose weight and not care where it comes from results in looking smaller but not better, and at the extreme end of the scale you look like you're emaciated and on death's door. Part of the key to maintaining as much muscle as possible is…

  • That article made my brain cry. Beer is less energy-dense than wine and spirits? That's cool. Except for the fact that they're not consumed in the same amounts... There's a reason why, for weight-loss purposes, spirits are ideal -- you get the effect of the alcohol for the smallest amount of calories.
  • I think mirrors actually lead to some form issues. Every time I see a guy squatting or deadlifting heavily (i.e. not just with his bodyweight or the bar) and he's craning his neck sideways to check his form, I cringe a little. Son, that is a good way to injure your cervical spine or pull a muscle in your neck. I learned…
  • Just do it. On this site we have a wide range of people who wouldn't be caught dead doing others workout programs or diet styles, but that's what makes it great because it all "works" -- as long as you get your butt in gear and make it happen! Good luck!
  • To lose weight you can eat whatever you want, but not as MUCH as you want. That is why this site is so great, because you can track exactly what you eat. With a digital scale and a bit of willpower (and a lot of honesty!) weightloss is inevitable. What you eat is important too, but maybe not in the way you're thinking.…
  • Interesting that no one has mentioned their bodyweight... But I will, after I convert my down-under kilograms into amerikanos I've been lifting weights for a good few years now on and off. This is my first time cutting (ya rly) so I'm stalling like an air show disaster, on a 5x5. I figure I have around another 30lb to lose…
  • I think we need to keep in mind the variation in levels here. As you get very strong then things change a lot. For the majority of us, you can squat often and deadlift after squatting every now and then which is why some of the most common, oldest strength programs such as Bill Starr's 5x5 (ish)--which Starting Strength…
  • What gym is this? A high bar full olympic squat goes all the way down. If you catch flack it's because those criticising you don't have the mobility to achieve this, so they think that you are going to hurt yourself like they would if they tried.
  • A correct squat (of any kind) should actually be beneficial for the knees. It's possible that either A) the form is the problem and/or B) suddenly starting a program with many reps when the body isn't used to it and can't adapt fast enough.
  • Well keep in mind that I'm in my early 20's and having studied at two large universities (by Australian standards) I have met a lot of vegetarians and vegans. They have clubs. So when I say that they mostly look like a bag of bones, I am referring to this population. And again, the majority of them don't look like what I'd…
  • Of course there are examples of muscular vegetarians/vegans. An individual may even know "many" such examples in their circles... But I can just as easily throw back at you guys that I don't know even one vegetarian/vegan person at two university gyms I train at who has reached even a novice level of strength, but we'd be…
  • Because of ignorance. I say "bodybuild," someone hears "meathead." I say "resistance training" and they say "I don't want to get huge." Let alone "tracking macros" = "ridiculous obsession... what's a macro?"
  • It comes down to what we all consider "healthy." My idea of healthy is maintaining a high level of muscularity and physical capacity, NOT JUST having high levels of "energy" during the day and supporting my body's vital structures through correct nutrition. I find that most vegetarians seem to sort of look like they're…
  • I've learned this the hard way. When you get that hungry it feels like the self control part of your brain turns off. Great work, and next time have breakfast! :)
  • I had an experience where I had a serious falling out with someone whom I thought was more of a friend than they turned out to really be. Not as bad as your breakup situation, but it actually made me a lot stronger. At first your illusions get shattered when you realise you're on your own now, but I used that to drive me…
  • Absolutely. The reality of the world is that attractive people are treated better, and if you're overweight you would definitely be more attractive to be at a more healthy weight. Some people try to get lots of money or wear designer clothes try to become really funny or great at dancing or a good guitar player so that…
  • When you're in control of your body, you feel more in control of your life no matter what happens. A lot of young people who grow up in bad homes develop eating disorders for this very reason. With MyFitnessPal we have a great tool to accurately control what goes into our body and know that we're doing the _right_ thing. I…
  • In my opinion it's better to have a higher calorie goal and fall under it than to set it too low and feel bad because you're always above it "in the red." Keep that goal for a couple weeks and if you're not losing weight, then take 100 or so off and see what happens for another couple weeks. This is the smart way to do it…
  • Looking at your results I'm not surprised they want to come back and "befriend" you. Isn't it funny how the better you look, the better you get treated? The world is a harsh place and for many people the reason why they make the change is because they want to be a winner and they know that life is so much harder when…
  • People will comment on your methods because they know that the best motivation is success. Success breeds motivation and when you see results in any endeavour, you will continue to do it. It already looks like you've passed the pain period where beginners put in so much effort and see little or no results and give up…
  • The truth is that the majority of weight loss can, should, and does come from eating less energy than your body requires. Using this website, losing weight is almost effortless as long as you try to make smart food choices that keep you fuller for longer (and grow your willpower over time!). The reason why we exercise is…
