  • Hi, nice to meet the other half! And thanks for the advice. But I think I'll leave it on "sedentary" for the moment - I'd rather be too stingy with my allowance than too generous. Will have a look for HRMs - if only to get a general idea of energy expended for most activities (I think cycling into town should be about the…
  • Ouch! Hope your horse is ok again soon.
  • Just finished my dinner - 204 cals for a bowl of homemade soup (potato, celery, and leek) with Quorn fajita strips. I make a lot of soup - it uses up leftover veggies, it's warm and filling, and has very few calories for its volume. But watch that sodium if you use broth.
  • Nothing quite like sitting in a saddle that's been drooled on.
  • Thanks, laughinggypsy. I'll look into that link - would make things simpler... And that makes sense, Zommbunny. The trouble is, my daily routine varies a lot, and I don't even consistently have the same days off, so I think it might be better to change it to "sedentary" and track everything!
  • Oh, and I'm using the calories burned as displayed by my pedometer, ca. 20% less than MFP would give me. No HRM yet.
  • Sounds delish! I'd just eat the squash before it ever reached the sauce, though - I can finish an entire half on my own for dinner, no problem. Another quick creamy pasta fix: drain your cooked pasta and return it to the pot, but turn off the heat. Then stir in an egg and a tablespoon of grated parmesan or gran padano, and…
  • Just been cleaning tack. Again. All that salt from the roads...
  • Oh, and my recovery food from long hikes tends to be a cheesy chip in the carpark before the drive home. Only time I can stomach that much grease and salt!
  • I used to do the melted cheese thing, too, but in a frying pan so it crisps up! Still prefer my grilled cheese open-face and crispy. I have a toasted sandwich maker, but it's used for darker purposes - to get me and my companions through all-nighters (formerly uni projects, now our 24-hour gaming sessions) I created the…
  • Sounds like you found a good solution! It rarely snows here, but we're into flooding season now, always something to keep things interesting.
  • But it's excellent diet food! I'd rather eat nothing than that...
  • And Rose, I hope you get back into the saddle soon - without too many thrills or spills! Or carnivorous sheep, horse-eating tractors, and scary, scary plastic bags.
  • Phew, that's quite a ride! Glad you made it up without sliding down that hill.
  • Tee hee, I wish I had a video, too! I didn't even realise what had happened, just saw some trees flashing past and was grateful that I was a) wearing my body protector and b) had remembered to tighten my girth just before. I thought he'd just bolted for no reason. I kept walking a bit up the hill to calm myself and the…
  • Not my experience at all - the nice ones all come only in tiny sizes, whereas for people who *need* to wear them all the time, you have a choice of white and frumpy or black and frumpy. Why would you even need a bra for a size A, beyond fashion? I'm jealous. I've always been big-boobed, and at my current size, have to lug…
  • If you're getting bored with plain old running, try joggling - juggling while jogging. Great for your hand-eye coordination, and if you use slightly heavier balls/clubs, it will help tone your arms, too! I've not tried it on a treadmill, but it should be easier that way than when you're moving forward.
  • I'm an import, too - I'm here on a six-week work placement which so far has lasted three years...
  • Sorry to burst in here late, too, but I only just found this group... I think you've all got sensible goals - are they going well? I started a new job on the 10th, and it's having quite an effect on my life - getting up early, set mealtimes, etc. So far, I've just been getting into the new routine so I can figure out how…
  • I got all the way to my third 20-minute run in c25k, then had to stop because of an injury. Nearly ready to start back now, and I'm rooting for you, too!
  • I'm in Ireland, currently part-loaning a lovely little gelding. Was on my university equestrian team, but I'm not really competetive, I'd rather just muck around out in the forest. Luckily, Jackson agrees. I invented a word for horses before I could even talk. My mother had one when I was about 10-15, an Arab mare. Still…
  • Nice to meet you all! I currently have a horse on part loan, 3-4 days per week (though the snow has kept me from getting up to the barn for over a week!) Jackson is a 15.2 gelding of uncertain origin - probably some Connemara, too fine to be a cob - who could play the part of Black Beauty. He's 8, but knows about as much…
  • Also depends on the type of saddle you're using, and how well it distributes the weight. A western saddle, for example, spreads it out over a much larger area. I use a treeless saddle, so I have to be extra careful!
  • I've joined the British Horse Society as a Gold Member - for around a tenner a month, you get public liability and rider accident insurance, and the money goes to a charity...
  • That's a good point - I ought to get in the habit of wearing it during groundwork, he tends to get distracted and swing his head around. (We're working on it - the owner bought him as a status symbol and doesn't ride, so he's a little ignorant, poor boy.)
  • (Hi - sorry if I'm barging in, new to this site!) I didn't have a helmet as a child, like a lot of you, but would never ride without one now. In fact, I always wear a body protector as well, at least for the moment. I came off a few days before Halloween. I was riding a young horse in a new saddle, still don't know exactly…
  • I do HEMA (Historic European Martial Arts) including fencing, longsword/heavy fighting, and archery. I ride horses as well, and would love to combine the two someday to try jousting, so I'm training my noble steed for that... I also run to build up endurance for sports, juggle to train my hand-eye coordination, and go on…
