  • Hmmm, I think you have a point. It's not Cushing's, but I suppose the same sort of things might apply.
  • I average about 600-800 calories burned per day, but none of it is exercise for its own sake. I bike to work once or twice a week - about a 1300 cal burn total, and try to race myself to beat my best times. I'm also training a horse (want to start orienteering/endurance rides) and doing historic martial arts, plus hiking.…
  • Hmmm, that's a good point. His vision seems to be ok, but you never know. I suspect it is laziness, he does eventually get the poles. And he doesn't trip in canter. He likes canter.
  • My favourite way to prepare it: chop green asparagus spears into lengths and pan-fry in just a bit of butter with some flaked almonds! Really nice if you just stir it into pasta (try fettuccini) with a little parmesan.
  • Hmmm, I'm not sure about swimming. Maybe in a supervised pool - when the shoulder fails, it tends to do so suddenly and dramatically, wouldn't want to sink! The trouble is that it's not really damage that can be repaired - there is simply no nerve signal getting through to a large amount of muscle, so the rest has to…
  • Yes, I've got it set to 1lb week at "lightly active" to count all the stuff I don't actually track. Trying to lose another 15lbs or so, and it's been stagnating lately. (Down nearly 25 already, though!)
  • I've got the same problem, lots of conflicting advice. MFP has me netting 1440 calories. I burn an average of more than 600 calories a day (over 5 months, so I think it's safe to assume that's a consistent average), so my gross calories should be at 2000-ish. TDEE-20% gives me 1970 gross, so it's fairly consistent with…
  • I have super smell as well, if the air is damp - at the moment, I can smell which of my housemates have been in which room recently, and it's not like they don't shower... It possibly saved our lives yesterday, certainly our house - my housemate put eggs on to boil around midnight, then accidentally fell asleep. The fire…
  • Beat my own best time for the bike home by a good 10%, new average speed of 23.5 kph!
  • Just biked home from work (though I took the train there) - new record for that route, 23.5 kph over 20 km, first time under 50 minutes! I've also already got over 10,000 steps on my pedometer today, and am about to walk to get the pizza. Mmmmm, pizza.
  • 29 and in Northern Ireland here, in case you need more buddies. Welcome to mfp, and I look forward to your post about your first ride, and all the others after!
  • Excellent, Marsha! I don't think I've ever mounted from the ground bareback... Today's NSV: all my jodhpurs were getting too baggy (ouch, chafing!) so I ordered a new pair online, nice denim breeches with red knee patches. It said they came up small and to order a size up, so I took the 30" waist ones. They arrived today,…
  • I was working at a different site today, and chatting to my new co-workers, when one of them said "if we had a geek-o-meter, it would constantly be over 100 since you walked in". I'll take that as a compliment...
  • Same thing here - I've now lost 6" off my waist and still nothing from the hips! The problem is finding a way to dress it so your clothes don't just go straight up and down where your body does not. Jeans can be tricky to find - but try tailored tops with a nipped-in waist and you'll learn to love it.
  • Similar situation today - we were doing fire safety training today and the guy doing the course claimed that the carbon dioxide extinguishers "reach - 37° C - that's absolute zero in Kelvin!" aaaaargh.
  • That's why I first went treeless. I was riding youngsters for someone who didn't care how his saddles fit - he kept losing his blanket while cantering! - and it wasn't doing their backs any good, so I bought a saddle that would fit anything...
  • I was happy when my pedometer said I'd burned exactly 256 calories, though I'd have preferred 512...
  • Lazy day off, but I took my housemate up to the barn after she came home from work. Warmed up a horse for her, then gave her an hour's riding lesson, with lots of jogging alongside - first time she's ever ridden! Then I exercised my own horse as well. Tomorrow will likely involve a bike to the tack shop, as my jodhpurs are…
  • I've been having pancakes a lot lately because my doctor said to eat more eggs. Current favourite is buckwheat pancakes stuffed with spinach and onion with nutmeg and a bit of feta. But I could see some sort of corn salsa working really well, too!
  • I'm not competetive, so for me, the challenge *is* bringing them on! I'd rather have a slightly challenging horse where you get a real feeling of accomplishment when it goes right than a good-as-gold everyman's ride. I realised that when I was riding my friend's old schoolmaster for a while.
  • Today I'm a nerd because at practice today, we were fencing Monkey Island style - insult sword fighting! I'm also learning to dual-wield rapiers. Historic fencing is so much more fun than sports fencing.
  • :blushing: You know what I mean. And it's nowhere near as bad as the girl I used to ride with, who got on someone else's much bigger horse and commented that "there's nothing like the feeling of 18 hands between your legs".
  • ...aaaand today my favourite jodhpurs were chafing terribly, because they're now all loose and wrinkly. Time to go find a new pair, I suppose...
  • Haha, well done for putting him in his place! I had some people come in to work yesterday that were obvious geeks, and when I started explaining about the disadvantages of crossbows vs. longbows, they said "we know, we play D&D". So I told them they'd made their charisma check and gave them a free canvas tote...
  • I tried on last year's convention t-shirt to see which size I want to order this year, and it looks like I'll need a (unisex) small now!
  • I usually just put on my nerd hat. It's a turquoise tricorn with the number 42 on it in a little rosette.
  • Haha, excellent. I suppose I'm the natural horsemanship one crossed with the endurance girl...
  • Unfortunately, he prides himself on never haven taken a riding lesson in his life... Saw him trying to make a horse move over sideways today, by pulling its tail!
  • Hi Kidostud, are you riding treeless? Looks like it in your photos. I've been treeless for nearly a year and wouldn't go back!
