Well, not everything! One of our clients based in Philadelphia sent our department an assortment of food items made in Philadelphia. I use the term "food" loosely; it included a box of Tastykakes. One woman took one bite and threw the rest away- she said it was nasty. The rest sat there untouched (wrapped in cellophane)…

I noticed that in India, too, where I used to go on business. The very poor, of course, are malnourished. The lower classes do their own cooking and it's pretty balanced. They do wonderful things with vegetarian food- lots of vegetables, including potatoes and chickpeas to make it filling, delicious sauces. Even those who…

I've got the FT7. It's a great motivator and I love to track my heart rate and calorie burn, but the chest straps get flaky after awhile. I've had the HRM 18 months, the original chest strap went bad after 3 months. I recommend the ones with the sensor built in (not the separate piece that snaps on). Even with that, the…

I agree, that was thoughtless of the nurse. Our wellness program has specific on-line courses that address getting active and eating healthy, including some of the emotional aspects of overeating (there's only so much you can do in on-line courses). They could be trained to mention what forms of support are available…

Yeah, I'm not a great fan of running (I'm 61 and it beats up my body), but I've had some great runs in my travels when a hotel gym wasn't available and/or the weather was nice. Many times I've found places I wanted to check out later- it's sort of a "speed-dating" survey of the area.

While it's good to have goals, don't get fixated on them as a measure of pass/fail. If you lost "only" 80 lbs. by the end of the year, would that be a failure? Of course not. And I echo the advice to let go of your self-consciousness about exercising in public. If you asked me to describe the build(s) of all the people I…

You don't want to miss the opportunity to have dinner with your bosses- it can help all of you work better as a team, and sometimes things get discussed in the relaxed atmosphere of a restaurant meal that don't get discussed in the office, so you need to be there. You can deal with this. Always ask for dressing on the side…

I went for "classic" today- William Tell Overture, Khatchaturian's Saber Dance, and a couple of Led Zeppelin favorites (When the Levee Breaks, Gallows Pole).

This. Occasionally when I see a plus-size runner outdoors it registers with me that they're big. My next thought is, "good for them". Most of the time I don't notice at all. Do it for yourself. I don't love running but it's a great way to burn calories in a short amount of time.

There are a lot of people here who will tell you that 1200 calories a day is too few and that your body will go into starvation mode and actually burn calories more slowly than it would normally. I'm not an expert but it certainly sounds possible. I'm 61 and pretty much don't count calories at all. I'm 5'7" and went from…

I am totally apathetic when it comes to workout clothes. I have stacks of T-shirts from various events, previous employers, etc. and I grab one and throw them on over a pair of shorts. That's it.

You mentioned that you've been together only 5 months but he moved in a month ago and you're engaged? That's moving awfully fast. This needs compromise on both sides. I agree with the point that you are ultimately responsible for what you eat, but your fiancé sounds like he's unwilling to make any changes at all on his…

You can do them without anaesthetic, too. I've had 2 that way and I didn't find it any worse than menstrual cramps. Since they always have you hooked up to an IV anyway they can probably give you some painkiller if it gets bad (I've heard that if you have unusual twists and turns and adhesions it may be painful). It's also…

Take a look at an issue of National Geographic with pictures of African women out in the bush and tell me how that braless thing is working for them. ;-) I've been around 34A/B all my adult life. I found when I was about 40 that if I sat around the house in my bathrobe too long (I was working from home at the time), my…

I've got 3 pair of pants and a couple of suits made by a tailor- no size labels at all! Not recommended till you get to your target weight, though.

DH and I gravitate to Subway on our road trips and when you're stuck in an airport, fast food is just about your only choice most of the time. It all boils down to choosing carefully and exercising portion control. I've been known to take one of those overstuffed panini sandwiches and scrape off the mayo (don't like mayo,…

I graduated from HS in 1971 (yeah, I'm Old) and wore a size 12 back then. I weigh a little less now than I weighed back then and the last few pairs of pants/jeans I bought were size 8. If I liked them tight I could get into a 6. I'm 5'7 and 130 lbs. and that's just downright silly. The trend has been towards "vanity…

Pasta and legumes such as chickpeas and navy beans. Very calorie-dense.

The great pieces of advice from these posts (IMO) are that you need to cut out your trigger foods and/or obtain only a small amount such as an individual serving. My triggers are all sugary. I've just had to stop eating some things because it's very hard to stop. Remind yourself that food is engineered that way. My mother…

I buy oat bran at Whole Foods from the bulk section. It's probably a lot cheaper per ounce than whatever you're paying for those little packets and it's not processed at all. It also cooks a lot faster than steel-cut oats. I heat water to boiling in the microwave, throw in the oat bran, then heat it for another 60 seconds…

That should help a lot. I'm 61 and I do cardio every day unless I'm deathly ill. It's not just the calorie burn, although that helps- it's the overall effects.

DH and I have very different food needs. He's on meds that depress his appetite so I want to make sure there are goodies around that he likes but that I can pass up easily. Fortunately, I've gotten VERY picky about sweets and other not-good-for-you foods since I changed my eating habits. It just doesn't tempt me because I…

I was in Munich around 2004 or 2005 with some coworkers and remember having dinner in an outdoor food marketplace where one of the shops sold "Pferd" (horsemeat). My American coworker who had lived in Germany and knew that I had remembered enough of my college German to understand the sign jokingly suggested I might want…

It depends on whether or not you'll be working out, but after some tangles with my Polar FT7 (mostly needing to replace the original chest strap and learning to keep the thing tight enough to pick up my heartbeat), I love it. It's more accurate than pedometer or wrist monitors and works in water (I like to swim). It's best…

I agree with the therapy idea- I've been though therapy a few times in my life when I needed mid-course corrections. In my case, I was married to a verbally abusive, alcoholic husband who put me down every chance he got. I divorced him in 1997 after 13 years of marriage and his drinking eventually killed him in 2010. Both…

Amen. They lost me when they started throwing high-fructose corn syrup into them. They're not a temptation at all for me. DH bakes real cookies. With sugar and butter and ingredients I can pronounce. I eat one or two and the rest go to the church coffee hour. DH, BTW, is old enough (75) to remember when the Girl Scouts…

DH and I are fortunate to be able to afford to travel (and it's a high priority for us), so we've been just about everywhere on our bucket lists and are repeating favorite destinations. This year it's Alaska; next year will be Italy or Scotland. What remains on my bucket list are Australia/NZ and returning to India, which…

You (the OP) have discovered the nasty truth about a lot of the processed foods that claim to be healthy. If they're low-fat they loaded them with sugar. If they're low sugar they're artificially sweetened. If they're not artificially sweetened they have high-fructose corn syrup. And the low calories in the 100-calorie…
