Oh boy. I don't think anyone said anything for the first year. Sixty pounds. I started at 270.

And finally, why this dry mathematical argument matters : there are real financial consequences if you are labled "overweight" for many individuals, either through premium penalties or loss of incentives. In the UK there may be health care consequences, as denying care to the overweight and obese is being used as a way to…

Again, I'm not arguing that bmi is useless. I'm arguing that it is not a good universal metric to determine the health of individuals. This is the same thing Quilette himself said when he developed the index. It's also why it's wrong to say "you are unhealthy if you have a bmi of over 25". That argument, while…

For individuals of high lean body mass (large frame and musculature) who are perfectly within normal variation, the bmi cutoffs to define "healthy" represent a much tighter limit on body fat than for those with low lean body mass. From a health standpoint it is nonsensical as adipose tissue is the greatest contributors to…

The point. Someone ages ago said it was impossible that bones had different weights, much less 8 lbs( their arbitrary number). I am demonstrating that this is just not true, that skeletal differences are real and significant. People keep trying to draw extra conclusions from this that I am not making. This is irritating me…

Ok maybe this chart will help a bit because my argument is NOT ABOUT ME. No matter how many times certain people try to make it about me. I shouldn't have used myself as an example. So this is the actual math. KNOWN 1. BMI defines "healthy weight" as a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 2. The mass of bones accounts for between 12-15% of…

You're right. I should've used 5'11" not 5'9" (height I spent about 10 years at). But 15% of 155 is still 23.25 and 12% of 130 is still 15.6. Those weights are both in the healthy range at either, and the difference is still almost 8 lbs.

No. In 1992, when we met, my friend and I were both 5'11". I use this as my reference height for my health because it was my tallest attained height. I would never compare my bmi at my current height with that of another woman who is also 5'8.25" because it would have no meaning. People are getting all hung up on my use of…

Most alcohol is a solution, though. Except maybe Everclear. Pretty sure that's as close to pure alcohol as you're getting.

Step away from the scale. Do not weigh yourself repeatedly. Seriously. Once a day, morning, after your potty chores, naked or in the same pajamas each day, will give you the most consistent reading possible. When them it can vary by several pounds based on digestive rate and water retention. This is why experienced folks…

Most, but not all, adsorption of calories occurs in the intestines, not in the stomach.

Hmm. I can't say I make activity optional if this is the situation I face. Honestly, it's a classroom management technique because focus gets lost when people have too much energy and have been trying to keep their brains on one idea too long. But no, I wouldn't ever single-out a student to "punish" that student in a…

Taking care of my body used to be my very last priority. Faith. Family. Work. Community... these things all were far, far ahead of spending time or energy on myself. And then I had a major reality check. Its impossible to take care of all these responsibilities if my body falls apart. My mom reached 525+ lbs. She had four…

The only reason any of this matters in reality is that governments and health insurance agencies are setting premiums and services based on BMI. I think this is appalling because the statistics just don't back up the use of the population metric on individuals or even on all sub-populations. People's judginess is an…

Except the friend is not my CURRENT height. She is my PAST height. I see no point in making a comparison based on the height caused by my condition. And the mass of bones difference remains valid. If both of us exist in the normal range of bone density and frame frame size, with the same overall height, then nearly 8 lbs…

I laughed when I read this because I've done a lot of teaching at every academic level over the years. And if a whole class is squirrelly, we take a quick (2-5 minute break) and do some exercises; stretches, jumping jacks, jog in place, etc. Now, I've never had to do this to college students, but even high school kids…

I feel I have a couple of points to clarify. Sezxy: I did not say BMI is "not valid" (in total). I said it has QUALIFIED use. Which is to say it's not (as Aaron pointed out above) a tool that was designed or meant to be applied to judge any individual's health, but rather a good judge of populations, and a rough estimate…

Thank you. Every human being deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. And it is the moral obligation of health care professionals to provide the necessary medical treatment to all their patients. I am astounded by the utter disregard for other people based on perceived moral superiority some people display. Yes,…

That treatment may literally be the difference between life and death LONG before significant weight could be lost. Asthma is no joke. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease. It is not a disease of excess weight. Wait-and-see is a TERRIBLE approach to take with autoimmune disease that has obvious progression and is…

Someone really needs to correct a major error that has been propagating here. The game is "Duck, Duck, Grey Duck". It originated in Sweden, where it is called "Anka, Anka, Grå Anka ". Yes, there is also " Anka, anka, gås", but Grey Duck is superior, and if you're going to make it an Olympic sport you should really nominate…

I'm another one who will say that it's OK to not do team sports. Kids who are out of control need to be brought into civil behavior, and a teacher only has so many methods at their disposal. I also thought the individual conditioning was the best. I was the youngest in my grade, and even though I was tall, I was physically…

I do it regularly. I'm very low on calories (net) for the past week. Today I'm ravenous, and I'm eating what I want.

But croquet must count because you can whack other people's balls? My family is pedantic at times. But really this distinction takes the cake.

Airlines have squished a lot more people into less space. That's worth considering before getting all judgey about the person next to you spilling over.

There is much math. I don't wish to bore you with it, but the relationship works for random individuals with similar body fat percentages at the top and bottom of the healthy range. Moreover, the approximation that height directly correlates to volume and therefore mass is destroyed by variable skeletal width, skeletal…

If it wasn't the point, why did you dismiss my argument basd upon my failure to directly facilitate piracy of the article? Even providing you with the hypertext link to the article was a kindness, and in return you insulted me and metaphorically spit upon me. And don't even get me started about the dismissal of a source…

Hilarious. You totally ignore the post where I point out the link to the full document on the initial referenced page, which was the official publication. I referenced correctly, your inability to use a hypertext link on the official journal article page is really astounding.

Thank you. No need to apologize, your stepping up is appreciated. I was pondering how to reply and get the discussion back on track after derailing it by using myself as an example to illustrate how the weight range hypothetical can be quite real. You have summarized my position quite well, and I thank you!
