  • Guess I'm a day late and a dollar short... A gift certificate for bike related stuff at the LBS, that I wouldn't turn down :-)
  • Absolutely Awesome! Makes me nostalgic and it ain't my family nor even my country. Enjoy the nostalgia TBY.
  • First of all, congrats on making the trip to work via bicycle. Welcome to the fold of cyclo-commuters. Be warned it is addictive. Next, as you commute more then you will find that the hills you once dreaded now offer only training opportunities. Of course I still think of each hill as a waypoint on my commute but that is…
  • Remember to listen to your body and learn the warning signs of overtraining. In other words, don't rush the 5 days a week commuting unless you are really feeling good. Your body will adapt and if you move at normal commute speeds then overtraining will not be a problem. Of course if you are hard-headed like me and use your…
  • My commute is 42 miles round trip. Now that the weather is warmer, I will be biking most everyday except when there is fire in the sky. I learned the hard way last year that rest is essential as I was doing the 42x5=210 miles a week commuting and then another 50 to 100 miles on the weekends. I now typically plan for one…
  • FDS proved to be a tough, tough contender. I was fortunate that the double 200K brevets fell into the Giro Challenge window and even then it was tough. Amazing riding FDS, especially over that mountain range as a commute route! Cloggsy, slow down and smell the roses are at least change the oil in that motor every now and…

  • Have you looked at Raleigh Bikes? I bought a 2012 Raleigh Sojourn for Commuting/Touring and I'll tell you that Raleigh really provided a great deal for the price. Since I plan to do long distance riding rather than crits, this Revenio line from Raleigh is where I'd look.…
  • As a bike messenger, one of the watch type HR monitors might be more comfortable and practical since you won't have a high dollar bike computer attached to the bike. Plus, I imagine you do a lot of running and stair climbing as well. However, I have no experience with such HRM's and hope others can fill in the gaps.

  • For me it is a double serving of Kashi Go Lean with a banana about 2 hours before the century and then another 200-300 calorie carb snack about 15 minutes before the ride start.
  • Thanks for the link, I have been notoriously slow at tire changes (I did 4 in about 2 hours last night while watching ATOC). My error was not using both hands going in opposite directions at the same time. I do agree with KansasRider, it takes me longer than 45 seconds to quit griping when I flat on the road.

  • I don't have time for eggs unless I boil them and keep in refrigerator. Without reading the whole thread but looking at Fiber One Original's nutritional information I suspect that you are not getting enough protein with cereal alone. I have one serving of Kashi Go Lean Original with skim milk and it holds me for about 2-3…
  • While y'all are across the pond from me, I'd still like to chime on on commuting and second the mirror suggestion. I use a "take-a-look" mirror that mounts to my clear (and only clear) riding glasses. I am as paranoid as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs without my mirror. In fact, I even use the mirror on…
  • I noticed the Connery resemblance as well. Fantastic Job - TBY
  • Thanks for the write up. I am registered for a back to back 200k the end of this month. Your ride report certainly helps remind me of some important points to keep in mind. I for one am impressed at the average speed for the first day since you complete a second century the next day. I'll be sure to pay more attention to…

  • I wear a hat under my helmet. I know it seems Fredly, but as a commuter and randonneur the positives outweigh the negatives. I'm too cheap to buy a cycling specific hat and instead look for hats with a short bill and no button in the top center. I've found two so far and both were about $10 a piece. Keeps my head warm in…
  • If I had to only use my smartphone then it would be endomondo with my data files also exported to Ride With GPS. In fact, that was my formula until I could afford a Garmin. I found MapMyRide to be crash-prone as well on my Android based phones. Knowing what I know now, I would have found a way to come up for the Garmin 500…
  • I sympathize with you on the rain! I broke down and road 2+ hours in the rain Saturday. My shoes were still wet last evening and with the morning temps in the low 40's today I couldn't bring myself to ride. Such seems to be the nature of these "challenges". On challenge days its hard to ride and I'll probably lay down my…

  • That sounds about right, I checked and my LT is 87.5% of Max HR. I'm not sure if Gaia is using a HR monitor though. If not then you will need to know your Perceived Effort levels.... looking for the link This site has a LOAD of information: http://www.cptips.com/xtocdet.htm#trntips BTW, Gaia - its sounds like on your 52…
  • Glad to have you on board. TBY will get your info setup soon, what number do you want on Team 3? I created a Strava account and joined the MFP group for the challenge. I primarily use RWGPS but it doesn't seem that it is going to be hard to sync Endomondo and Strava as well. I am syncing to Endo for the National Bike…
  • It's taken me a little time to offer advice since the ride is so close. You say that you have Century in Four Weeks but in reality you only have Three weeks of training left. Week 1 - Try a 50 mile ride, weekly total should be at least 150 miles. Week 2 - Try a 62 mile ride, weekly total should be at least 200 miles. Week…
