The problem seems to be (re: fad diets) that when humans believe in something (or seriously want to) they don't like being told, in any way shape or form, that they may not be right. Fads of all kinds tend to be this way. Furthermore, most 'low carbers' eat more carbs then they realize and/or have problems related to too…

Out of curiosity I did the math on my protein for today and as it was a pretty heavy cardio day, as mentioned before, I upped my protein in the usual fashion (protein bar snack pre-lunch and protein shake x2 post lunch) and it came in at 28% of my daily caloric total. My fat was 32% which put me at 40/28/32 for the day. So…

It's not complex carbs that cause gas etc.

25 for women and not when on a reduced cal diet. 38 for men -- ditto above. Source: Mayo Clinic and others.

Whole grains are also a good source of dietary fiber and can have a positive effect on blood sugar levels unlike simple carbs (which is what most people think of when they think of carbs). To be fair some use the term 'simple carbs' differently and I've seen them defined different ways but here is how I use the term for…

Whole grains? Complex carbs? To maintain endurance I eat 50-55% carbs -- whole grains not simple or refined sugars. Typical daily diet for me is rolled oats, bran and chia with maybe a little granola for crunch and 3/4tbs honey with 1/4cup of milk then at lunch I eat 1 1/2 cups of who grain rice and quinoa. Dinner usually…

:) And it's good for dietary fiber too -- I eat it almost every day mixed with whole grain rices. On the topic of being a complete protein recent studies suggest that isn't really accurate -- actually what isn't accurate is that other grains are not -- and the level of essential amino's in order to be called a 'complete'…

For men we used to say that the calf should be the same size as the bicep to be symmetrical -- I used to work my calves pretty hard because I thought they were too small and whimpy looking. Today they are bigger then my upper arm but I suspect that has to do with the 505 miles of walking (starting when I was 280+) and…

Quinoa, which I love, is NOT high in protein. I see that a lot and it's a fallacy. It has 8 of the essential amino's yes, but not a great quantity of them. Can't imagine why drinking a whey protein mix would hurt breastfeeding? In fact I find that a strange concept. Look at Legumes and nuts etc that the vegans use to get…

I use Cryosport Whey Protein from Costco which is 140 calories for 27g of protein. For me protein is for muscle maintenance and healing and whole grains (complex carbs) are for energy. In the end though, it's about calorie control and daily caloric burn right.

I've taken over 500g of protein per day (when I was 232 and lifting heavy) and now can take as little as 90. However when I ride or walk (which I do about 5 days a week) I crank that up towards 150-160 or more. For me the tell is whether or not I'm recovering from workouts: extended muscle soreness and/or slow recovery = I…

Actually whole grains (complex carbs) have a positive impact. You're talking simple carbs not complex carbs.

230 cals only equals 16g of dietary fiber but good point.
-
Not at all. For me to maintain without losing weight I'd have to eat 2450 cals a day assuming I did not work out....working out changes that to possibly well beyond 3000-3500
-
Fair enough ;) For the record (and your info if interested) I started working out in 1982 (before that I wasn't serious) and by spring of 1983 I was 220lbs with a 30inch waist -- and I'm a guy. I wanted to be a body builder and could eat 7500 calories a day! At times I ate EVERYTHING in sight. Back then I don't think many,…

I might add that it is difficult to get enough dietary fiber while eating as much protein as many seem to think they need today, all the while keeping calories down. 1g of protein = 4 cals 1g of fat = 9 cals so let's do the math: 184LBM * .85 * 4 = 625.6 184LBM * .35 * 9 = 579.6 That's 1205.2 calories and I haven't had a…

Nonsense. The rules I see people posting on proteins are all biased and based on one fad or another. Fact is you can live quite well on 25% protein and 20% fat with the rest remaining as carbs. It ALL depends on what you are trying to achieve. When I wanted to bulk up (you're typing to a guy who was cramming down protein…

Many people who tell me they don't eat carbs don't actually mean they don't eat carbs! lol Real conversation: Them: "I don't eat carbs" Me: "so how do you get your fiber?" Them: "Well I eat Whole Grains." Me: DOH! I think a lot of people think 'carbs' are only sugars and white bread and don't realize that there are simple…

Or don't splurge at all ;) I only splurge if I do enough cardio to burn off more calories then I splurge! lol

I've known people to do this and with some it helps, with others the weight comes back later and still with some complications arise. As I do often (and I hope I don't sound like a broken record) try watching 'Hungry For change' as it addresses the reasons why people gain the weight back that they lost. In a nutshell,…

When is the last time you took a week off? When i was body building (years ago -- in fact DECADES ago! lol) we used to try to take a week off every few months. Sometimes the body just needs some time to rest and heal. If you do take a week off be religious on your food intake and don't get on the scale. After a full week…

Don't worry, be HUNGRY :) I tell myself that when I start to think I need to eat. Working out and doing lots of cardio gets me eating again and when I need to take a break (which we all should do) I have a hard time remembering to: Don't worry, be HUNGRY! As long as I'm eating at or under my target (1448 today vs my target…

Wow really? Going from White Rice to Whole Grain Brown Rice is not moving from one unhealthy relationship with food to another -- I am always amazed at how presumptuous people are on the net. You assume that because I'm here I had an unhealthy relationship with food all the white YOU are here giving advice to stick with…

Indeed! It is a grueling brutal task with no help from the local grocer! lol

Another good one is what I call 'pole to pole' runs. You walk for a given distance (in my case two miles) at a brisk pace to really get warmed up, then run/job between telephone poles (where I do this they are 100 yards apart) alternating between poles (run 100 yards, walk 100 yards). I do this for 2 miles. The idea is…

I love the 'Great burn' people post because someone did 10 minutes of walking.....seriously? WTF? How about a great burn is when you did an hour of walking at 4.5mph.... rant over.

Yup read them all ;)
