I think I am going to not bother with acupuncture & just continue with the sports massage. My friend is going to lend me her TENS machine to use at home. I am also thinking reducing the mileage of my runs over the next 3 weeks plus 3:1 run/walk will be the way to go & add in a 3rd strength training session. I have been…

Hi - I am a "hot" person too!! Wear a proper (non cotton) running tshirt or vest so it won't get heavy & will draw the sweat away from the skin. Also running sox - the twin lined ones so you don't get blisters! Try both out before your race to check no chafing!! 59 deg is a good running temp for me - not keen on running in…

To name a few in no particular order: 1) stay healthy 2) run 3 marathons before I am 50 3) ride route 66 on a Harley davidson 4) go to las Vegas & grand canyon 5) go to Newfoundland 6) go to antarctica 7) see the northern lights again 8) run the polar half marathon in Tromso Norway 9) finish our house restoration 10) reach…

I train & race without. I run alone most of the time & from a safety point of view like to know what's going on around me!! Also on quiet roads I run in the middle of the road to avoid the camber where possible so need to be able to hear cars so I can move over!! Also as a lot of races don't allow it, I don't want to get…

Hi I am currently training for my first marathon in April & have also spent time looking into the nutrition side for stronger & more efficient running!!! Feel free to add me - always nice to talk to other runners!! :flowerforyou:

Katniss - amazing story & good for you that you are able to get back into running!! Thanx for your post & good luck for the future!! :flowerforyou:

Thanx but I can't blame my trainers!!! Went to proper shop & got assessed & fitted. Trainers fit lovely & never had any problems with them. My previous ones were very wrong though so I know what that's like!!!
-
Hey thanx for this - when I say my trainers are ok I mean they really are ok!! They were properly fitted & I have never had any issues with them - really comfy too. My last pair were a nightmare & I had to run my first HM with strapped up feet to avoid more chafing & blisters!!! Not good at all - turned out they were way…

I am not sure what Gu is though I have heard of it. Sounds like they are an energy gel or similar. I take SIS isotonic gels as they seem to be ok for me. I have to avoid caffiene as it makes me tired & sluggish & shaky (yep opposite of what it's meant to do!!!) I do find bananas brilliant though before a run & also plain…

PS I have also run a few races prior to this training - 5 x 5k, 2 x 10k & 2 x HM. Cheers :flowerforyou:

Thanx for all the comments & advise - I have been doing between 14 & 22mi a week since mid Jan plus one spin class & one kettle bell class a week. I dont think I ate enough proper carbs in the few days before & also it was a lot warmer Sunday & I did run out of fluid after 13 mi. My ITB only plays up after I have been…

I can relate to u feeling your body is holding you back - I feel the same!! I am prone to calf ache & mine generally wears off after running for about half an hour but I have found massage helps as mine get quite tight & also the vibro plate in the gym if yours had one? You have had some good advise on here from other…

PS sorry forgot to say I did run 16mi (with about10 x 1 min walk breaks) 3 weeks ago in wind & rain which was much more successful (& 6 mins faster than this weekend!!!) perhaps the walk breaks helped?!!!

I would largely ditto Berry H advice. I also use SIS Go gels & take a zero tablet in 500ml of water with me along with a Nakd bar chopped up. Beforehand I have jumbo porridge oats with a spoonful of chopped almonds & a banana. Have just started sipping 250ml of water with maximuscle Viper Active about an hour before I go.…

Yep here in the UK it's about $9 a gallon!!! And probably on it's way up AGAIN!!!! Would be lush to only pay the sterling equivalent of $3.89!!!! but then the government wouldn't like it as they would lose out big time since they take about 60% in tax or thereabouts!!! The motorist gets kicked all the time over here & when…

Dragonfly1996 came from my dad. He died in 1996 of lung cancer (non smoker) & a friend of my sister wrote out the Dragonfly Story which struck a chord with both of us. We both also got dragonfly tattoos done & have accumulated loads of things with dragonflies on. Somehow they make me feel stronger & calmer! :flowerforyou:

I will miss the first weekend due to travelling (13mi one) but may be able to do one the 2nd weekend (19mi one) or tweak it a bit, if we get back on the Saturday - will play that by ear. Fitting in a couple of shorter ones in the week should be ok & could even put in a few mins of fell running whilst out hill walking (she…

Good grief I couldnt even lift the smaller red ones behind her!!! Fantastic though she is & only 17!!!
-
I am guilty of the (lack of) warm up - just jig about on the spot for a few seconds then get off!! Probably for same reason as you in thinking I dont run fast so should be ok. That could be another reason why my ITB was playing up last Sunday. I do stretch after but dont always walk at the end to cool down - again I just…

I am part veggie (eat fish but not everyday) & I also was struggling on protein intake. I have upped my Greek natural yoghurt intake & also have protein shakes which has seemed to help. Also as above nuts & beans etc ate good sources. Good luck :flowerforyou:

I take Jointace sport which includes glucosamine & crondroitin, wellwoman sport & paradox omega 3,6 & 9. I have only been taking them a month but have friends who run & have used it regularly as a support to their system & found it has helped. I am having ITB issues in my knee which have just come on as my distance had…

Hi I'm 5ft 3 & currently 136lb (started at 154lb Jan 11) & my goal is 126. Also pear shaped & do NOT carry extra weight well!!!! Please feel free to add me!!!

I like Maximuscle Promax - they do bars too. Powder flavours banana, vanilla, strawberry & chocolate. Have only had banana myself. There do seem to be quite a few around though so just a case of finding one u like I guess!! I use Promax as my gym sells it. :flowerforyou:
-
Actually I always forget about protein shakes & I do have some promax powder in the cupboard so will try that & see if that bumps my levels up. Will also try the yoghurt & cottage cheese. Thanx for that. I usually just do core resistance gym equipment (20kg), squats & lunges on a bosu ball (20 mins a week) plus the kettles…

Sorry I sHould add that I also spin once a week & do a kettle bells class plus 15 mins of strength training in addition to the running!! :ohwell:

I have been on here a year now & lost 18lb. I love the way the site works & it helps for a lifestyle change rather than yet another faddy diet!!! I still have 10lb to go but find the people on here help for motivation & handy if u need to know anything!! Please feel free to add me but good luck with ur…

Just used some of next months money on compression socks before I get paid next week!! Otherwise it will have to be a proper food shop!!!!!!! :ohwell:
-
I ran my first half in September 2010 before I lost the 18lb to my current weight. I ran my second half last November & knocked 20mins off my time. Although I do attribute some of my weightloss to this improvement in speed (I do think being lighter helps), I think most of it was down to better training & diet the second…

I have read that this is ok to do occasionally & it's better than missing it completely. However I do agree that it doesn't really help in terms of "time on legs" - just mileage. Good luck with the rest of your training & the marathon!! :flowerforyou:
