  • II have almost no running experience. I'm "fit" from powerlifting and lean from a good diet, but I have run more in the past 2 weeks than I have in the past 20 years. So, no base. I think going from 28 to 24 will be a lot easier than 24 to 20 from what I have read. My end goal is sub 21but I'm not sure age and genetics…
  • That sounds like an awesome idea to me.
  • Gloves suck for deadlift. Use this at the gym: I put some in a travel tube of hand lotion that I emptied out. People think I'm putting on hand lotion. Then my hands turn white and I'm sure that cornfuses them. Chalk at home if that's where you lift. I still get calluses on top of my calluses but I never get blisters.
  • I'll address the butt wink question: at this point, it doesn't appear to be a big issue. You still appear to have good spine alignment but it's hard to tell with the loose clothing. And you are hitting depth really well, too. Point your toes out 30 deg next time and see how that feels. Tom
  • In to follow. If I did presses like the first video, I'd be on disability after one workout. First, I would switch to a neutral grip (rotate barbells 90 deg). Then I would tuck my elbows into my lats. Then I would lower the DB's to my ears. I have no idea if that's the best way to do OHP w/ DB's, but that's the only way I…
  • I used their calculator and got an F. 48 yo male 5k time 28:39 (that was my time this morning): Age-Graded Score 50.66% Age-Graded Time 25:28 I like yours better. But I think you entered 33:40:00 which would result in the numbers you posted. But that's 33 hours, 40 minutes, 0 seconds. I might be able to do a marathon in…
  • Kind of you to offer, but what I really want is a Big Mac.
  • Yes it is. Many questioned the validity of the hypothesis with valid arguments (more than I expected). Some just ridiculed (less than I expected). Some were as arrogant as my original post (about what I expected). I did expect more than 4 pages of replies though. Maybe it's not as hot of a topic as I presumed. I did do…
  • Go Navy. Beat Army.
  • I have freakishly large calves (16") and that puts me in the 4XL size and that seems like I would be swimming in a 4XL. If I decide to get them, I may have to make the 1+15 hike up there and try them on in person. I'm very fortunate to live within 90 miles of Elite and Rogue. Or very unfortunate depending if you ask my…
  • This site says a 70% DL weight for a 200 lbs male over 40 is 395 lbs (~2x BW) lbs: http://www.lonkilgore.com/freebies/deadlift_standards_pounds_small.pdf This site says a 70% 5k time for a 48 yo male is 20:30 minutes: http://www.runnersworld.com/tools/age-graded-calculator Holy hell, that's fast. Gonna have to agree with…
  • Did you get the super heavy duty or the heavy duty?
  • I think I may have been obtuse in stating my original hypothesis. I apologize for that. I'll restate it to be more clear: Lifting rules. Running drools.
  • I feel humble.
  • I'm going to say well done, congratulations and awesome for you. Now that you've done a mile, what's next?
  • I do warmup sets overhand, 2 work sets with left hand under and final work set or 1RM set with right hand under. I can get to 75% 1RM with double overhand but not for reps.
  • If you can handle the Texas Method, that is 3x faster progression than 5/3/1. I like 5/3/1+joker sets and BBB for bulking. Hits strength and hypertrophy and I get to test maxes a lot.
  • Everything seems to work better when it's toasty warm, IMHO. I wear Rehbnd knee sleeves and they keep my knees toasty. I wear them for running and lifting. I got a size med when the chart says large and they fit perfect after a year of stretching. I also wear elbow sleeves, a compression shirt and compression pants to keep…
  • Many people squat more than they DL. Again, if you don't like it, go post on the low carb thread.
  • Whatever. Go post on the sugar thread.
  • I think a 150 lbs person doing a 375 DL is equal in accomplishment to a 300 lbs person doing a 750 lbs DL. Get it now?
  • Zumba is not strength training.
  • Why is it always either / or with the cardio vs. weights thing? When you do both, they both get better. And screw what anyone else says, do what you enjoy. Unless you enjoy torturing animals. Then just run.
  • Holy crap. Great work on losing weight. Have you been lifting at all? If not, a lot of that 33 lbs lost is likely muscle mass which is terribly difficult to get back. So start strength training.
  • Chocolate Chip Cookie dough is my favorite. I have been eating Quest bars for over a year. Saved me from many a Snickers bar.
  • Day 1: 1 and 1 Day 2: 2 and 1 Day 3: 2 and 2 Day 4: 3 and 2 You get the idea. They key to HIIT is to stride like your life depends on it. If you go fast enough, the elliptical will probably not be able to track your strides / min. Mine stops at 315. Tom
  • I find the elliptical to be a very good HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) machine. Do a 10 minute warmup. Then every minute on the minute, do 10-15 secs of all out as fast as you can pedal as if a lion will eat you if you don't stride fast enough. The rest for the rest of the minute (45-50 sec). Do that 10 times (10…
  • So I bit and looked at it and all the reviews on Amazon. Seems all it does is make you sweat around your waste. So if that is your goal, then buy it. But I hope you do not expect it to make your abs pop out. I am not inclined to dismiss it completely because I use compression gear all the time for lifting. It helps get all…
  • Let me show you something: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HLoKYAOKTM This was probably my third ever set of squats. Should I be worrying about shoes, or perhaps there are a few other things I should address first? New shoes can't fix that hot mess. Get the book Starting Strength, get under the bar, video some squats and…
