When I switched from conventional to sumo, I went from 335 1RM (actual) to 390 1RM (actual). I haven't looked back. My body lends itself to sumo, though. I never thought to try it until Sara suggested it. Very happy. There's actually an equation that helps determine if you might be better suited for conventional or sumo.…

Read this book: http://tinyurl.com/ks4nlgs Allen Carr's Easy Way to Quit Smoking I was a skeptic, but I haven't smoked since Jan 9 and don't want to. Tom

While I don't have an answer for pre-workout, I have found that what I eat 2 days prior to a heavy lifting session can have a serious effect on my performance. Probably because I naturally gravitate to a low carb diet. If I don't do some carb loading 24-48 hours prior to the start of my 4 day lifting cycle, I will have…

This is probably the root cause. I went down yesterday to DL and could not pull 365 off the floor. That's an easy weight for me. I could write it off as a bad day, but I've had 2 bad days this week (missed my squat numbers as well). And I am exhausted. So it's time to deload and get back on a normal 5/3/1 progression. The…

I have been tracking BF% for a long time by various methods. I have no idea which one is accurate as the only truth data is an autopsy and I am not prepared to go to that length to know my LBM. But I have enough data to determine trends, and that's what is really important for me. I want to know if I am losing or gaining…

Right now my goal is strength to compete at powerlifting (squat+bench+DL). Short term: 1,000 lbs total (I'm at 965 right now) Mid Term: Ohio State USAPL record in 45-49 Masters class for DL (500 lbs) Long Term: 1,200 lbs total 500 lbs DL is achievable this year. 1,200 lbs total is going to be tough unless I can get my…

I guess I shouldn't complain. I was struggling with recovery most of last year. Since the new year, I have crammed 12 weeks of 5/3/1 into 8 weeks. I skipped 2 delaods and did 2 weeks of 5/3/1 lifts in one week (3 week and 5/3/1 week). Added 15+ lbs to each of my 1 RM's in that time. I think I added some muscle mass as…

I did rack pulls the other day and that seemed to engage my whole core really well. I do them on DL day as an accessory to build grip strength.

I like watching weight lifting form videos. Including the ones of me.

I might go to the local gym and push 405 on the smithy. I'll edit out the bands that I have placed on the bar helping me out (I can only bench 245). I'd go 5 plates but that might be absurdly unbelievable.

Knee sleeves are God's gift to squatters (and deadlifters). Get these: http://www.jackalsgym.com/store.aspx?prod_id=RH-KS They are awesome. Put them on before you get to the gym. Warmup with them on. Feel the warm goodness. They have greatly improved my recovery and enjoyment of squats. They aren't the cheapest, they are…

I lifted my first "weight" in March of 2013. I had 157 lbs of Lean Body Mass. I could dead lift 200 lbs, barely. Fast forward to today and I have 157 lbs of LBM. And I deadlifted 425 lbs last week. As mentioned, the CNS learns how to use what it has and apparently can do a very fine job of it.

I'm doing 5/3/1. On a typical 5 day: Warmup: 4x5 (20 reps) Worksets: 3x5 (15 reps) Joker Set: 1x5 (5 reps) Boring But Big: 5x10 (50 reps) 2 Accessory lifts: 5x10 (100 reps) So that's about 190 reps / workout. 4 workouts / week = 760 reps. This volume is sufficient for strength gains on any caloric intake. It is also…

If you have a choice between barbell and machines, choose barbell. If you have a choice between machines and nothing, choose machines. IMHO.

Very awesome. Good for you.

You could try out one of the 3,677,342 30 day challenges that pop up each and every day on this forum. Those look like fun. :grumble:

I don't need to lift 425 lbs off the floor. I enjoy doing it, though. I'd bet you don't need to hold yourself horizontally from a light pole, but it sure looks like you enjoy it. I do things I enjoy without regard for how they impact my physically non-demanding business career. If I were an athlete (amateur or…

Is that 4 different races? All on the same day? If so, that's awesome. Nothing else to offer. In for learning, though. Tom

Those are probably equipped numbers. I think the squat gear adds a lot more for squats than it does to DL. I wonder how Fred's raw numbers compare? They might be closer to each other. I do think biomechanics matter when it comes to squat vs. DL numbers. Not sure which build is better for which, but I bet there is a study…

The question was not which do you prefer, the question was which one is better. We got 90% answer which they prefer and 10% give the correct answer: Neither Both 3.1415926535 Red. No Blue. AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! This seems like a nice article that makes sense:…

Great idea. There is a Push/Pull here in April. I will attend and chat up the folks there. Might even get brave enough to compete. Thanks, Tom
