  • I, too, have read that it's worth about 600 calories. Also remember, that if you don't eat well before a donation, you might have trouble donating. The last two times I went to give blood, they failed to get the full usual amount (the 2nd time, it was so little they just had to throw it away). My blood pressure was down a…
  • How about brunch or dinner out at a reasonably-priced restaurant for your Mum & Dad? You could perhaps look out for a groupon deal or just phone the restaurant and ask to buy a gift voucher. Theatre or cinema tickets are another option (local amateur theatres are much cheaper than Bell Shalkespeare or equivalent). iTunes…

  • Could you cancel the photographer and ask a friend to take photos, or just ask all your friends to send their best pics? (I did the latter, and was very happy with the results - it also meant less stress on the day, with one less thing to worry about). I also went without flowers, except for a small bunch to carry down the…
  • I did NaNoWriMo a few years ago, successfully. I couldn't imagine doing it while trying to lose weight, though - every spare moment in November that year was spent sitting in front of a computer, so I got very little exercise!
  • "Roaring" is an onomatopeia (the word sounds a bit like a lion's roar), but I don't think that's what they are looking for. Unless he is actually, literally making a roaring sound, it's a metaphor.
  • I don't have scrambled eggs often, but when I do, I just scramble them in a stainless steel saucepan with a splash of low fat milk - no butter or oil. It does take some scrubbing to clean the pan afterwards, though, which is one reason I don't have them often! I've tried them in the microwave a couple of times - much less…
  • Absolutely. My diet is what I eat. Whenever I am watching what I eat (whether to lose weight or for maintenance), I consider myself "on a diet".
  • You people are scary. I'm glad it's illegal to carry guns, knives (as weapons) and pepper spray here.
  • I find it sometimes helps to get myself in the headspace where I can look at things like confectionery and think "that's not food." In a fairly real way, it's true: it has almost zero nutritional value. When I convince myself of that, I can walk past the confectionary and soft drink/chip aisles in the supermarket because -…
  • Mind you, even without vanity sizing, it wouldn't be as straightforward for women to clothes shop as it seems to be for men. Our curves vary more, so we're always going to have to try things on. (Dress A fits my hips but is baggy at the waist, dress B fits at the waist and flows around the hips, but gapes at the breast,…
  • Come to Australia! I'm about your size (5'1.5, 122 lbs and pretty active) and I'm pretty consistently size 10. (But yep - when I find an 8 that fits me well, I feel the same way!)
  • The big one is: Don't eat pre-processed foods, e.g. fast food, frozen dinners, bought pasta, curry and casserole sauces or powder mixes, and salty condiments. Don't eat salty snack foods. Don't add salt to your food at the table, or in cooking. To reduce your sodium intake further, choose "no added salt" or "salt reduced"…
  • For a healthy BMI, aim for 50-62 kg (i.e. 110 to 137 lbs), for a normal build. You can go down to 45kg if you are "weedy" and don't get much exercise, or much more than 62kg if you are very muscular.
  • How about chips (fries) fried in duck fat? Scotch eggs? Grilled lamb chops? Sausages with fried eggs and hash browns for breakfast? Pine nuts and seeds mixes to munch on between meals? If he doesn't like plain nuts, maybe nuts dusted in spices, curry powder or wasabi would go down well? Chicken in walnut or cashew sauce?…
  • See if you can adjust the bike set-up (or use a different bike) so that you can sit in a more upright posture. You could also try tilting the seat slightly forward to take pressure off the crotch, though that puts a lot more weight on your hands.
  • I like to go to bed on a full stomach. If this bothers you, eat less during the day and have a big dinner shortly before bed. (The idea that you'll gain more weight if you eat before bed than if you eat the same at some other time is a myth).
  • Here's a quick and easy one: 1 onion 1-2 cloves garlic 1 tbs (or to taste) mexican chilli powder (or else ground chillis plus organo and ground cummin). 1 bay leaf (optional) 1 tin kidney beans, drained and rinsed 1 tin chopped tomatoes Saute the onion and garlic. Add everything else. Simmer until the texture is right (15…
  • I add any of the following: Frozen berries. Banana and cinnamon. Banana and chopped walnuts. Diced mango. Cinnamon and sultanas. Sultanas and chopped dried apricots. Grated apple. Grated carrot and nutmeg. Grated pear. Stewed apple. Cinnamon and brown sugar. Tinned pear and peach mix. ... or just a splash of milk or a…
  • What you are eating needn't be salty, but it sounds like it is. Are you eating unsalted peanuts and unsalted peanut butter? Are you adding salt to the chicken and vegies, either directly or in the form of a processed sauce? Cut back on the salt in these foods, and it will free up your choices. Calories come from either…
  • I've always had a good waist:hip ratio (because I carry most of my weight on my hips).
  • Two things for me: * Chilli cheese biscuits available from the local delicatessen. Not only are they super-delicious, but my husband and friends don't like them, so I can't buy them to share and can't resist the whole pack once I've bought them. (For US readers, "biscuits" in this context means, I guess, a kind of cracker…
  • I'm in Canberra. Nearly at my goal, but my weight loss is slowing down (and I think I might shift my goal downwards when I get there), so I'm going to be here for a while. Feel free to add me!
  • I'm just under 5'2". I'd like to be 5'8 or so. Tall enough to kiss my husband when he doesn't want to bend down for me! Tall enough to reach the top shelves in the supermarket and the top cupboards in my kitchen! Not too tall for an aeroplane seat.
  • If you're broke, why not just run in your old normal clothes? Even a loose pair of old jeans and a long-sleeved t-shirt is fine to exercise in.
  • 10 minutes is all I can manage. And even then, I have sore calf muscles the next day! And it's not as though I don't use my legs much normally - I do over an hour of cycling and 45 minutes of hill-walking just about every day.
  • It's not unhealthy as long as it's healthy supper food! And as long as you're getting your fibre at some point in your day.
  • 1) It feels better as your fitness improves. After a while, it feels great and you really miss it if you have to skip a day. 2) Find a way to incorporate it into your day so it isn't something you specifically have to go and do. I get most of my exercise cycling to work and back, and to other places I have to go. I need to…
  • No - at least not all of them. Mine will tell me I'm 27% fat one hour and 36% the next, even though my weight hasn't changed at all. Also, mine seems to respond more to how damp my feet are than anything else. The drier my feet, the higher the % fat it tells me, and if my feet are perfectly dry, it just gives an error.…
  • The key thing to keep in mind is that if you have more food than you need and can't save it for another meal, the excess is going to waste anyway. Eating more than you need doesn't change that fact: it's just as much of a waste on your hips as in the bin, but at least putting it in the bin won't make you fat or sick.
