  • It sounds like now is a good time for you to stop losing weight, so yes, I think you should keep tracking calories and exercise, but set your goal to a maintenance level and keep an eye on your weight so it doesn't start to drift upward.
  • I'm eating my exercise calories, but have manually set my goal to 1000 net cal/day. If for some reason, I can't exercise on a particular day, I aim for 1200. (5'1", 129 lbs currently, down from 157, aiming for 121).
  • I find "you don't need to lose weight" encouraging! It means my work so far has been successful and if I keep it up, I'm bound to reach my target.
  • You could try logging your evening workouts against the next day, so you can eat the calories you earn then.
  • You can buy "no added salt" canned veges. Starting with dried beans instead of canned also cuts out the salt, and is much cheaper, too, though it takes a little more planning.

  • Untoasted museli (i.e. raw oats with other grains and dry fruits mixed in). Other cereals (bran, wheat bix, wheat flakes, etc). Eggs. Fruit smoothies. Leftovers from a healthy dinner.
  • e_briggs, the 70% target is 70% of your estimated maximum heart rate.
  • Losing2Live69, it doesn't seem to be related to your resting rate. My resting rate is about 57, but my HR gets to 120 just walking, 140-160 cycling, and I can't keep it below 170 or 180 jogging. Max heart rate varies from person to person, but a good rule of thumb is that any aerobic exercise that gets you sufficiently out…
  • When I was 17... I weighed 50kg (110 lbs) and thought I was fat. I was a prissy teenager, but thought I was a grown up. I was loving all my first year uni subjects, and studying 50 hours a week. I printed my essays on a dot-matrix printer. I hadn't heard of the internet.
  • Just having a bit of a browse on Web of Science, I found this interesting abstract [from Bryner et al. (1999) Effects of resistance vs. aerobic training combined with an 800 calorie liquid diet on lean body mass and resting metabolic rate. Journal of the American College of Nutrition. 18(2):115-121]. "Utilization of…
  • Vaston, it's very interesting to hear a professional opinion. Thank you for the post. If you don't mind, could you ask your friend if she can recommend a good scientific review or paper where I can read up on this? I have access to most scientific journals through my work, so it doesn't have to be open access.
  • The combined weight of two cats. I've lost just a little more than that and find it amazing to think it's the combined weight of my two large, overweight cats! I know how heavy they are when they both sit on top of me at once.
  • Almost all my clothes got too tight. It was pretty clear I either had to spend a lot of money on a whole new "fat" wardrobe or lose the weight. Since I wasn't happy with my looks or fitness at that weight, the choice was clear.
  • You can pack some food before you go out so you won't need to eat at the servo. Eat before a party at which there will be finger foods so you don't need much there. Drink light, low carb beer or (even better) soda water and bitters.
  • I understood that it was a simultaneous auction, but I still don't understand why there's no need for buy bids. If I am willing to sell my 3 units for $10K each, it doesn't follow that I'd be willing to buy another unit at the same price (much less another 10 units). Lets say I have a certain amount of land suitable to a…
  • Esculator, that explanation makes sense. Did I get the rest right? I think the original set of steps is very unclear and needs to be re-written. (I'm a water scientist and really struggled to understand it).
  • Speaking personally, the ideal male to look at is not so muscular that it is obvious that he is muscular when he is clothed, but sufficiently muscular that he cuts a nice figure (this is a level that is noticeable when he has his shirt off). I find very bulky, body-builder types intimidating and not attractive. Still,…
  • Esculator, let's see if I can understand. 1. Work out how many units each participant has to begin with (based on historical allocations). 2. Each participant sets a minimum sell price for each unit they have. 3. They presumably then place buy bids for the number of units they want. 4. As many units are allocated as have…
  • Are you weighing everything you eat? Eyeballing food can be very inaccurate, and published weights on bought food can be up to 25% under the actual weight (producers aren't allowed to go under the weight on the label, but can go over).
  • I've been with my partner for 11 years, married for the last year of that. I find it hard to imagine us ever splitting up, which is part of the reason we decided to marry. But I've seen several friends who have been married for several years end up in divorce. People change. They get married before they have finished…
  • My plan s not to keep logging obsessively once I'm at my goal weight, but to keep exercising restraint and keep weighing myself daily. Any day that I'm over my goal weight in the morning, I will log what I eat that day (with a weight-loss calorie target). That way, I should never get more than a pound or so over. It just…
  • According to the bra fitter at my local lingerie shop, a 34D actually has a smaller cup than a 36D. 34D has the same cup size as 36C or 32DD. I'm not sure if this is true or not.
  • There's a famous demonstration often done in classes on critical thinking. The teacher asks everyone for their date of birth and, at the next class, hands out to each student a descriptions their personality which is said to be based on an astrological reading. The students are asked not to share these with anyone else…
  • There is no credible scientific theory or evidence for the "eat right for your blood type" diet. (I'm a scientist and have gone looking for published evidence). Pretty much any diet that restricts what you eat in some way will work for many people in the short term (because it makes you pay attention to what you eat and…
  • On the bright side, your first week wasn't wasted, because although you got the portion sizes wrong, you still got into the habit of noticing and writing down what you eat and started learning about calorie contents of different foods!
  • Nuts (though they are energy-dense and you don't need many). Fruit and veg. Air-popped popcorn. Light soups, if you have time. Hard boiled eggs. Ryvita crackers, oatcakes or wheat bix (which can also be eaten dry). Non-fat, unsweetened yoghurt. A glass of lite milk with a drop of vanilla essence. Baked beans. For a larger…
  • Eat more whole cereals. Eat a high-fibre cereal for breakfast every day. Bran is especially good, but oats and wheat flakes are also not bad. Make sure you're getting your 2 fruit and 5 veg a day (and not as juice). Replace white bread with multigrain or seed loaf. Brown rice with dinner is good too. I find too much…
  • Fingers crossed that it isn't diabetes!
