Today is my 42nd day of reaching a minimum of 10,000 steps using a Jawbone UP. I allow it to count every physical activity that I do (walking, running, soccer) *except* swimming. At first, it was a struggle, but my average for the last few weeks has been more around 15k. You don't need to exercise to lose weight. You need…

If you track daily, although it can be hard, I know that I see a spike every 4-5 days regardless of what I eat. Although it's scary at first, it becomes a numb assurance, and you can just see it as "noise" in the data. Remember, you need to eat 3500 calories OVER your TDEE to gain a pound. 700 cal over to gain .2 lbs.…

When I say barefoot, I mean barefoot. Not minimalist, although I do have Vibrams. No shoes is just easier. No socks, no sweaty feet. You have eyes, so you don't need to be afraid of glass (just don't jump on it and you'll be fine!). I agree that you do need to start slow with barefoot running, but to put it in perspective,…

You should consider barefoot running. Not only is it cheaper, but it teaches your body proper form so that you don't get hurt halfway through training. Barefoot runners don't get plantar fasciitis, or shin splints, or any of the diseases shoes are supposed to prevent or heal. Check out this and many other resources (google…

A thousand times this. We are growing at an unsustainable rate and GMO's and monocultures are simply trying to feed the world. And with the rate of growth in our population, soon enough, we'll need all the help we can get. One big issue with GMOs is that they encourage pesticide and herbicide use around the crops, which…

I weigh daily because I like to know my body's pattern. I know that every 3-4 days, my weight spikes from retention, but it doesn't mean that I suddenly weigh more. I think it's important, especially over just getting a snapshot. If I get one chance at weighing myself a week and somehow, it falls on a retention day, it…

I'm down for more friends! I've been here about a month and plan to be here much longer than that :) I'm an ecologist based in Ohio.

Trust in the math. If it doesn't work after a month... maybe try to lower it a bit.

I'm in Dayton, but originally from Rochester, NY. I love hiking our local Metroparks here!

I "wow"'d outloud. It's amazing what you've done. I wish some of my relatives could follow in your footsteps so that I could keep them around longer. I'm glad I'm headed down your road though!

2-4 for me as well!

My primary activities, with the UP, are walking, jogging, and playing soccer. I will also occasionally attach it to my ankle for a bike ride. I find that my primary 3 activities seem well estimated with the UP, and I try not to eat over my calorie goal even when it adds in calories for exercise, because at the end of the…

A great way to figure out your calories is to buy an UP band by Jawbone. I've had one for just over a year now, and am just now beginning my weight loss journey for real. It observes your activities and calculates your daily calorie burn. MFP links up to that and tells you how many cals you can eat each day, so if you take…

I would like to say several things. This is my first forum post on MFP and honestly, I was just bored this evening and decided to browse the threads. I read all of these messages, although not the ones from the previous thread. Here's my anecdote: I'm in my 4th year of my Ph.D. studying conservation and ecology. Although I…
