  • Come on, guys. Somebody here badly needs to post a pic of himself eating a gigantic chili dog with cheese and onions. :)
  • Yes. When I've decided to try to "get a life" and not track every molecule into my mouth, I don't do well and start to gain again. Eventually, I want healthy eating and exercise to be such an engrained habit in me that I never have to count again. I'm apparently not close to that stage, yet.
  • Since April, 2010, I lost 65 lbs, slowly put back on 30 lbs, lost 35 lbs, put back on 10 lbs, and have since lost 5 lbs so I'm now 65 lbs under my initial peak weight. Yes, I'm a yo-yo. When I've made good progress, I seem to get cocky and take my eye off the ball. But I'm learning and less than 10 lbs from ultimate goal…
  • Lovely! Congratulations! That's a lot of carrots to misplace. Let's both go for some more!
  • Dry Roasted Edamame = 3.0 g fat per 23 grams Peanuts = 22.0 g fat per 100 grams EDIT: Ooops. I had my units wrong. Looks like these are closer than I thought, though edamame is still half the fat.
  • I'm guessing you're addicted to nuts, right? Who isn't? Counting out the individual nuts before eating them just seems wrong but if I don't I'll eat a whole bag of them. So here's the distraction I use: eat dry roasted edamame instead. They are low in fats, high in protein, and they kinda almost go down like I'm eating…
  • Hours?? 30 minutes max after a small meal and I go for it. Only if I have something very acidic will I feel any indigestion at all.
  • I can't say anything except I've gone through several seemingly long periods when I didn't seem to make progress which was frustrating. Fortunately, I usually kept my head and told myself to be patient and focus on today. Stick to my goals every day. And I always came through and sometimes dropped a lot weight in a hurry…
  • Absolutely, I give an honest and cheerful good morning. I'm trying to be neighborly, friendly, and wouldn't mind encouraging the many obese people I see standing there like a lump watering their flowers or struggling to retrieve their morning newspaper to get out and join me sometime.
  • Coconut oil as a supplement for health benefits?? It's pure saturated fat. Because I'm concerned about my heart health more than anything else, I avoid it (and palm oil) like the plague. What am I missing?
  • Just back from Freebirds. That was excellent! I had not known they were owned by Whole Foods so of course the food looked really great. I had a big salad with nice mixed greens, black beans, roasted veggies, tomatoes, poblano salsa, and a little tomatillo dressing. Well under 300 calories and it was really tasty. They gave…
  • Cafe Express in Dallas, Houston, and I don't know where else has a California burger which I get bunless with turkey but the best part of it is the roasted artichokes and tomatoes. Fabulous! And you can ask for a side of those to go with. Cafe Brazil in Dallas has some excellent black bean soup. Hungry's in Houston has…
  • Mexican? Try the tortilla soup at Los Cucos (a chain). A nice vegetable soup with just a litlle cheese and a few tortilla strips in three different size bowls. Not a ton of cheese and chicken. Mediterranean? Try Fadi's in Dallas and Houston. I'm sitting in one now where I just finished off a yummy kale salad, lentil soup,…
  • What was that? Did you hear something?
  • Wow. 1440 is a lot. So I had to check their website. Besides lettuce and tomatoes, it had fried chicken, fried bacon, two kinds of cheese, a honey-mustard dressing, hard-boiled eggs, and garlic bread. But the next time you're delivered something that looks like that you could skip the bread, get a different dressing on the…
  • Motivation slumps? All the dang time. One doesn't get 50+ pounds overweight because they had some short-term problem. We get that way from long-term habits. Habits that are so easy to fall back into despite our best intentions. If we don't pay constant attention to this for a very long time, we set ourselves up for…
  • TMI Alert! I gotta poop before I go for a run, so yes. I have a light breakfast (granola, fruit, greek yogurt) and COFFEE! about half an hour before I run (and after I go "number two"). Sorry about that.
  • Scott, what I've read would say that if you, as an adult maale, have to take an iron supplement daily to maintain your hematocrit, you should see your doctor. The consensus medical opinion is that taking such supplements in a healthy male is unnecessary and should lead to a higher than normal iron level with toxic effects…
  • Just for information, 8 weeks is the minimum interval for blood donations in the U.S. and Canada but this varies widely between countries. I've often wondered who is being overly cautious or who overly risky. At least I've always been tested for hematocrit before every donation and I would assume that's a universal…
  • Yes. Upper and lower GI were both clean as was a CT scan. A "pill cam" showed possible AVM to be confirmed and cauterized during a small bowel enteroscopy soon. Thanks for your concern.
  • Very good. I'll be reading through that and the references. Thank you!
  • Yes, I know. That doesn't mean it's correct. It might be. But without a citation, it's just another internet post. I've "fired" doctors for not giving me sensible answers. They aren't immune any more than the rest of us.
  • Thanks. I've been monitoring my iron, vitamin C, and folic acid, and vitamin B12 (also necessary for the metabolism of iron into red blood cells, apparently) intake lately but really an iron supplement (which I need to take since I had lost almost all of my body's stored iron) provide more iron than what I can eat. You're…
  • Thanks. I've read that and went off trying to find where these explanations come from. In particular, the "heel strike" destruction of red blood cells which you can read about everywhere on the internet in runner's forums. I can't find any evidence of it anywhere in medical journals or anywhere that refers to any real…
  • I remain unimpressed by everything I've read about "runner's anemia". None of the popular claims appear to be substantiated by any evidence and so they remain as hypotheses presented as facts. The proponents should go into marketing or politics or modern "journalism". In my case, I now have a diagnosis for my anemia which…
  • Be sure to test them out. Mine (Horizon EX-55) has the "pedals" close together which fits my rather knocked-kneed build. Most have the pedals set farther apart and they are uncomfortable and one I tried was just painful. Also, the stride length can vary a lot. Mine is rather like taking baby steps so I feel like I have to…
  • Done! I will sleep well tonight. And tomorrow I'll start again.
  • But I don't wanna eat my broccoli! Oops. Misread thread topic.
  • Yes. I lost 66 pounds and regained 31 of it while weighing myself and recording and plotting my weight every single day for the entire period. I was completely aware of what I was doing all the way back up. But I did mostly stop counting calories once I had hit the minimum. Fortunately, I've once again lost all that I had…
  • Thank you for that. That all sounds like good advice. And, yes, I've wanted to ultimately do fun, active things (and with my wife, too) and not just "work out". Hula hoops. Now, there's something I hadn't considered. I always wanted one of those when I was a kid! Thanks, again.
