Yup, seen it ... please see my edit above...

Well, that's fascinating, EXCEPT the Loss-Adjusted Food Availability Data Series does not measure actual consumption (And they state that right on their web-page). And the ERS consumption data differs from other data. (But then again, the USDA is an agriculture marketing agency, not a health agency.) By comparison, the CDC…

This is a VERY MISLEADING statistic - and overall isn't remotely true. It *is* true that the consumption of Cane and Beet sugars has remained relatively constant the past 20 years, but the total consumption of all caloric sweeteners (which also includes corn sweeteners such as HFCS, etc.) continues to rise, and has never…

FYI meat intake by itself does not lead to high cholesterol. A poor diet can, but a diet high in meat is not necessarily a diet that elevates cholesterol. My total cholesterol is well-within normal range. My HDL-C is higher than normal. My Tg/HDL-C ratio is 0.696 as-of my last labs. Overall, my lipid profile is amazing -…

When considering zone training, you need to know your true maximum... do you know your TRUE (not 'predicted') maximum? If you're using any of the standard formulas, you may be WAY off. A formula would put my predicted maximum heart rate at about 172-175 bpm (depending on the formula used). Yet my maximum is actually 204…

I personally find it works well for me to bulk twice a year, but I only increase weight by about 7 lbs during my 'bulking' phase (on a large frame), for two reasons: 1. I don't want to have to buy new clothes, and; 2. I don't want my insulin-resistance to return. I eat keto to manage diabetes (I'm a Type I who also is very…

There's considerable literature to support the theory that total cholesterol > 200 is not a problem, and no real scientific evidence showing it IS a problem. It's "conventional wisdom" that's been extrapolated from a hypothesis (that despite literally billions in research $$ remains unproven) and that's it. When you…

This is pretty-much where I am most-days (the 5/25/70 split) ... ... yet I've had people accuse me of NOT being low-carb, because they only look at my total carbohydrate intake, and see days with 120, 150 or even close to 200g of carbohydrate (because I have days where I'll spend 7 hours doing 15,000 feet of climbing on a…

There is a theory many hold (which is not true) that eating too-few calories will prevent fat-loss because the body will try to spare it. Many that believe this theory (again, un-proven) refer to that as "starvation mode". There IS, however, a component to energy expenditure known as 'Adaptive Thermogenesis' which IS a…

Unfortunately, medical schools are STILL teaching the lipid and diet-heart hypotheses as-if they're fact, when they're not only unproven, but most research has concluded the complete opposite of the theories that led to the hypotheses themselves. I agree, a second opinion is warranted in this case, especially as the…

I think it's FANTASTIC for the makers of Hydroxycut ...

No, they are not technically the same thing. Ephedrine is one of the active ingredients in the herb Ephedra. Saying they are the same is like saying a steering wheel and a car are the same thing simply because one is in the other. OK, yes, it's a slight exaggeration, but the basic principle is the same. One of the active…

12.2% - at Diagnosis 7.0% - 15 weeks later (also lost 70lbs in that 15 weeks) 6.0% - 6 months after diagnosis (on < 30g a day carbs) 5.2% - 12 weeks after that (after starting basal insulin and 45-60g/day carbohydrate) Maintained low 5.1-5.4% for 2 years now.

Those saying ephedrine is a high-risk supplement are confusing it with Ephedra - which is a completely different thing. Ephedra / Ma Huang is banned for weight-loss due to it's negative health effects. Ephedrine is banned for weight-loss (in the USA only) because it makes it more difficult for people to obtain the…

In addition to the ECA stack (Ephedrine, Caffeine and Aspirin - which most overuse tremendously) many will also use diuretics while cutting ... anything to reduce bodyfat and water weight when on stage. Taking boatloads of stimulants and diuretics isn't the healthiest of activities.

I've had no issues like that, hopefully anyone who has can respond positively, or with some suggestions ... Good luck!

The only artificial sweeteners I avoid are the items designed to replace sugar on a one-for-one ratio in baking. IE: Splenda for Baking, where it measures 1:1 with sugar. The problems with those is in order to get the bulk required for the 1:1 ratio they are very high in maltodextrin which is well-known to raise blood…

I agree. But I'd add that I likely wouldn't get a second medical opinion - but an opinion from someone with more nutritional understanding than most MD's. Honestly, most personal trainers I know have better nutritional education than most MD's. I also want to add: If this low-carb/low-fat diet is also low-calorie (under…

I'm 48 years young and maintain pretty-well at anywhere from 2,800 to 3,200. I lose weight around 2,500. But I need to eat about 4,000 daily for about 3+ months to add any muscle on my frame - it's really annoying. So yeah, I can believe it *seems* absurdly high, but it's likely not as absurd as you think.

Depending on the country you're in the "nutritional information" labels are reasonably accurate. In the USA the FDA allows up to 20% discrepancy +/- on food product nutritional information labeling, if that gives you some indication ...

For many diabetics an excess of protien causes glucose to go up. When we eat protein, and it's broken down, a certain amount of it goes to repair/maintain lean tissue, etc., but EXCESS protein is either converted to glucose via gluconeogenesis or excreted as waste. There is considerable research now that suggests that…

I was originally diagnosed as Type II, further testing verified Type I ... Not only did I reduce bolus insulin, I eliminated it. I use only basal insulin. I eat low-carb enough to not need the basal, and time my higher-carb meals to coincide with intense exercise (typically between 30-45 minutes prior to exercise) to limit…

The ONLY issue I have with Taubes' books or articles is his argument that exercise doesn't do much for us. And depending on what you mean by "exercise" he's both right AND wrong... I'll explain: First, I'll explain why Taubes is right... I'll use myself as an example - because I was obese. Just before I added exercise into…

Unless you're a 6'2" active male, yup. It's pretty difficult even for young, healthy people to lose 10lbs of bodyfat in a month, unless there's something very wrong medically that the diet itself corrects. That is an AWESOME link, and a great story. And yes, strength-training is amazing. Adding more muscle to your frame…

^^ This. Unless you're INCREDIBLY tiny or have a serious metabolic disorder, you need considerably more than 1,200 calories. Especially if you have weight to lose. So unless you're a 4-foot tall 65 year old with hypothyroidism, please eat more. Some will suggest there's no such thing as "starvation mode" - but it DOES…

FYI there are more than just morbidly obese diabetics on the diet. I'm not remotely obese anymore (about 10.5% bodyfat). I got the idea from Ron Raab, who is the Vice-President of the IDF (International Diabetes Federation) and Founder of the charity "Insulin for Life". He's been a Type I diabetic since the age of 6, never…

I found I didn't lose weight until I switched my diet to a ketogenic/LCHF diet. I now do a TKD (Targeted Ketogenic Diet) to coordinate my carbohydrate intake (both amounts and timing) with my exercise. Before I was ketogenic I was eating the typical 45g of carbohydrate per meal and not losing weight at 2,200 calories a…

It can be extremely difficult for an insulin-dependent diabetic to lose weight, considering we're constantly adjusting doses of important hormones responsible for regulating much to do with our weight. Many of us have found that switching to an LCHF (low-carb/high-fat) diet has helped balance those hormones, helps reduce…

I eat quite low-carb as well and find I have to target my carbohydrate intake to be approximately 30-45 minutes before I do my strength training in order to have the necessary serum glucose for a strong anaerobic workout. 160g of protein is pretty high though - most plans don't call for that much protein for women ... You…

High-fat. I'm never hungry. Yesterday MFP told me I had 2,390 calories remaining (after already eating almost 2,200 for the day) and I wasn't hungry. I almost always get under 10% of my calories from carbohydrate and it works great for controlling my diabetes. I also have amazing labs - low triglycerides, great HDL,…
