I lost about 35 lbs by running (mostly on the treadmill, but I added road workouts as well) and using a regular road bicycle on a stationary trainer so I could watch TV and workout at same time. DVDs bore me because I can't "multitask."

If you're in the middle of a walk and you find your heartrate isn't showing any more, you can remoisten the band using your finger under your band. Water or spit even.

How old are your shoes and how many miles do they have on them? I advise to get new shoes every 300-400 miles or 6-8 months even if you aren't putting that many miles on them. This generation of shoes and midsoles looks good for a lot longer sometimes but the support just isn't there. Also if there is a running store near…

I was in the Navy for 25 years and constantly fought to keep my weight under the limit, so you can't just diet to get down to a weight -- you have to maintain it which is hard to do on field rations and situations where there is lots of junk but no fresh veggies around. I lost almost 40 pounds over the last 9 months by…

I recommend using a heart rate monitor to track calories on a bike -- depending on how you ride it is harder to get your heart rate up than for a similar effort running and the estimates seem to be off (and rely on average speed). I use a GPS with HRM to track my outdoor rides, and the HRM when I put my bike on stand for…

I had pretty good luck on South Beach a few years ago but had no reason to do it again -- but I still reduce carbs by looking for low GI vegetables and grain options vice those that are higher. (GI = glycemic Index). The Dr. who wrote South Beach advocates low GI and low fat -- not "no carb" and "high fat high protein" as…

Some places have avacado on grilled chicken. Carls Jr uses mostly an guacamole like mix that probably has mayo in it to make it go farther and not turn brown as fast, so that's not good. Maybe some of Wendy's newer grilled chicken has avo?

I like #10 -- if you're working hard, you're running no matter what pace you're going.

I have painful shins next day after power walking -- I think mostly because I extend my stride to try to walk faster. Also happens when I try to match strides with someone taller. I find a mid-foot strike while running on the treadmill (shorter steps, upright stance) tends to not hurt things as much as a heel strike.…

If weather is variable, I pick up a ls tshirt or sweatshirt at Goodwill and just leave it behind when I get hot. The socks into arm warmers is a good idea -- or if you have a fanny pack and real arm warmers you could tuck them away after you get warmed up.

I've been working at this since March. I'm 5'0" - HW (starting) = 163.5, CW = 126-127. I run or bicycle for 30-45 minutes x6 days moderate intensity. Based on calculations TDEE -20% was close to 1200, I'm sticking to averaging around 1200 daily on a weekly basis since now I weigh less. I don't eat back my exercise…

Hang in there. I'm 5' 0" started at 163 and am now down to around 126. I've been averaging just under 1200 the whole time and as I get closer to my goal, I'm staying around there since I weigh a lot less. I run or bike 30-50 min per day 5-6 days a week. I don't eat back my exercise most days -- so most people would say I…

I guess carrying a Polar HRM (which talks to Virgin Healthmiles) AND a Garmin GPS on runs qualifies as being geeky.

Recommend pepper spray. I think that would be much better than self defense if you're not highly trained with a weapon (not only target shooting, but close quarters so you don't get disarmed and weapon used against you). Bear spray or a Taser might be another option if legal for self defense -- more disabling and longer…

Highly suggest doing intervals as well as long steady jogs to improve your speed. You can do intervals on the road or on a treadmill by going faster for a short amount of time or distance and then dropping down to your normal speed -- you don't have to use a track, although that works well too. "Fartlek" is a name for…

My new favorite dressing is Blackberry Balsamic Vinegar. You can make with regular balsamic vinegar it if you can't find it to buy. Even better with a little pressed lemon olive oil. Black beans, garbanzo beans are good things to add to make more substantial in lieu of meat. I also like basil with most of my salids

Maybe add something spicy, like chili or chipotle powder or fresh peppers (not bell), if you can tolerate spicy stuff. Lots of canned tomato has sugar added, look at the label.

Maybe the types of calories don't matter, technically, but I find that I feel more full on complex carbs and whole grains than on simple carbs, so I'm less inclined to overeat.

If you link Garmin with Runkeeper, and then link Runkeeper to this site, your Garmin stuff will transfer.

South beach worked for me a few years back so this time I have been successful with low calories with relatively low simple carbs (veggies and beans good, minimize white stuff - pasta, white flour items, white rice, etc.) -- I haven't felt deprived or hungry for the most part even though staying around 1200 calories. Have…

I find polar heart rate monitors accurate -- the basic mechanism for heart rate is the same regardless. What you get for more $$ is the ability to track your heart rate through your exercise and record it to your computer, laps, ability to recall, etc. If you just want to know what your heart rate is at a given time, or…

I'm on my second Tanita digital scale with body fat. I never have that kind of fluctuation with the weight. The BF% fluctuates all day, really according to how hydrated I am. In the morning have lower weight, higher BF% due to dehydration; in the evening as I drink water all day, the weight might be slightly higher but the…

I ride a lot but my "sit bones" are the last thing to bother me; hands and feet fall asleep long before anything else hurts. One thing that helps the problem is to change up how you are sitting every 5 or so minutes. Lean forward on your handlebars, sit upright, sit less upright -- change where the pressure is. That works…

Oasis low carb sprouted flax seed bread - 45 cals per slice, 8 carbs, 2 g fiber, 5 g protein. Not that expensive either compared to others I've seen. you need to keep it in the refrigerator, though or it gets moldy.

For chafing i've found that vaseline type products make it worse (they get sticky). Johnson "First Aid Creme" is beeswax based and is a good lubricant -- I tend to wear long shorts when I can but they are getting harder to find in the 6" length (plenty of 9" and 4" ones around, but 4" is too short).
-
Use Oasis Low Carb or Ezekiel Sprouted Breads which are both low GI. Very filling. I like them toasted, with a little spread or no sugar added jam.
-
Only have to go 9mph (that's only a 6.66 min mile) to burn 976 cals per hour according to the MFP database.

Breakfast wrap - 1/4 cup egg white, slice turkey bacon, small low carb tortilla or 1/2 a larger one. Sometimes salsa. I precook the egg whites and bacon on sunday and put them in plastic bags to take to work to reheat with the tortilla. Can add other veggies too if desired.

I wear wicking "bicycle" shorts (without padding) under regular loose running shorts -- the longer length of the "bike" shorts prevents chafing. I used to wear cotton ones but those are really hard to find now. Use at least 6" or 9" length.
