I've had issues with anemia and hair loss in the past, too. I don't tolerate vitamins very well. I do a few things to try to keep this under control (have been very bad these past few weeks, just undereating generally due to stress, so don't go by my diary lately, but usually it's better.) 1) Get enough biotin from dietary…

Bruising is an injury. You are causing trauma to yourself which breaks blood vessels causing discoloration. It's internal bleeding, granted on a small scale, but it's still an injury. Anyway, I don't see a willingness to tolerate excessive bruising as an indicator of strength or toughness, but to each her own. I've got a…

I am not sure what callouses have to do with strength, unless you mean strengthening your epidermis? Not a big concern for me. I use the pad. When I don't, I get a bar shaped bruise across my back no matter where I place it. It doesn't have anything to do with it sitting on my vertebrae or not being strong, I just bruise…

Five foot even, 157 pounds at the moment and wearing a loose size 12. (Or size 31. I can fit into a 10 or a 30 but they are a little more tight in the waist than I like.) I don't know about you, but size 16 is the limit for me. They don't really make plus size clothes that aren't crazily out of proportion for short women.…

I have struggled with this on and off. I lost quite a bit of hair in my late teens due to extreme low calorie dieting, and now I'm very careful about it when I'm losing weight. Keeping up adequate protein is important, but so is biotin. A woman can get most of her daily value from eating one egg a day - but that's *with*…

I'm 5 feet tall with a lean body mass of 108.3 pounds, according to the military calculator. (The "meanest" calculator for us short girls, the kindest one says I have 117.8 pounds of lean body mass.) That is fairly massive for a person my height, as many women my height weigh less than 108 pounds, total. I'm still at…

I go through strange cycles when I am losing weight. Breakthrough bleeding, missed periods, two periods a month... Every time my body fat % changes significantly it seems to throw my hormones off for a while. I would try not to worry about it, at least until you can test again.

Back fat is usually the first to go, for me. But everyone is different. By the time I was down 20 pounds there was a significant difference. Now I'm carrying most of my fat in my belly, which looks a little bit better than the "lumpy" look I was sporting before.

You've given us very little information about what is really going on, but in my house I know it helps to continue the eating schedule that the whole family is familiar with: breakfast, lunch, and dinner and to make smaller portions of whatever I am making for them rather than trying to eat some…

I did this for years with no ill effects, and loved it. (Found it easier to maintain my weight, too, but that's just me.) If I weren't 40 now and pushing the limit for cardiovascular side effects I'd go back on it.

I don't care for The Biggest Loser, generally. Weight loss really ought not to be a competition, it should be about what is healthiest for the individual. If you want to watch one of those shows I think "Extreme Weight Loss" is better because it's just one individual on a tailor made program, and they often make changes…

We didn't either! And I'm not that old, 40 today. We would have an "after school snack" - but that was it, and it was a defined snack not a constant grazing. I've never fed my kids lots of snacks, although they are allowed to get fruit any time they want it. When we have other kids over who want a snack all the time, I…

Cheebus. Thanks for sharing, that's a great piece. This is one of the reasons I don't run outside. I hope that there's less of this in my semi-liberal city than the crappy little cow town I grew up in where I was harassed every day for 12 years, but honestly I don't have it in me to find out. I'm just about to the point…

How do you observe this, exactly? Since everything is done by EBT now, I'm not even sure how you would know unless you're leaning way over and ogling their debit card. I can't remember the last time I've "seen" someone buying food with food stamps, it's a private transaction.

Unfortunately, there are plenty of products made for school lunch programs that are designed to meet government regulations, but to look like junk food. It's not teaching kids good eating habits to feed them low sodium "whole grain" corn dogs, all you're teaching them is to eat corn dogs. Our school lunch program in my…

What? I was a veggie for about 4 years, and frankly this is ridiculous. Fish is not poisonous and it does not violate her religious beliefs. If you don't want to be involved in the purchase of an animal because it goes against your ethics, I totally get that. But being afraid of well-cooked animal material sitting next to…

Just have a late lunch before you go, and explain that you are there to support the family but you are on a special diet and you will only be ordering a drink. Order a zero calorie fizzy beverage or an iced tea. Smile. If they ask you about it, mumble something about a diet plan. This is not actually a lie (you do have a…

That depends, what are your goals? If you just want a straight calorie burn, running is the most effective. If you can't run, use an elliptical. Just keep your heart rate up and really challenge yourself for the entire half hour. If you want to add some strength training, try 20 mins run/elliptical with 10 minutes of…

I eat white rice all the time and still lose weight. Just make sure it fits your numbers for the day, then why not? A half cup serving works best for me.

I'm interested, thank you.

Just eat butter. Problem solved.

Yes. I want one. It's not totally impossible to find the political will for these things, but it's a real hearts and minds battle. We recently got voters to approve half a billion dollars for our local school infrastructure, something I never thought would have been possible 10 years ago.

A recent study found a link between carnitine (which is abundant in red meat) and gut microbes in the digestive systems of meat eaters, and heart disease. I don't think the way the meat was raised was factored into the study. I eat red meat all the time and am unlikely to stop since the husband and family love it, but this…

Not alarming at all, for a baby. My niece was so chubby that her parents had to remember to clean underneath her fat rolls. Both of her parents were skinny vegans who biked and walked everywhere. She got those fat rolls from breastfeeding, almost exclusively. She has never been overweight since. It's much more alarming to…

Totally figuring in buttered cheese to my macros tomorrow.

I put on most of my muscle mass the last time I lost weight, 10 years ago. I did actually gain significant lean muscle mass, but 1) they were first timer gains 2) Not sure how diligent I was about my caloric deficit, it was a long time ago and 3) I am genetically gifted in the muscle dept. (And happy to be.) I'm so happy…

Petite sirloin is a great lean cut. Don't get it sliced too thin, though, that will just make for a dry steak. Dredge it in some seasoning salt and pepper, and throw it on a hot grill pan on the stove. Pan fry until rare, turning once. A splash of worcestershire sauce on each side is extra delicious and adds few calories.

You are immature. I'm not saying that to be mean, I'd say that to 99.9% of girls your age. Having "done everything in the book" does not make someone a "man slut." Slut shaming your boyfriend is a sure sign that you are a) not with the right person and/or b) in need of some serious self reflection. You were the one who…

OP: I don't think this is really at its center an issue of faith or religion. Yes, those are the facts underlying the problem, but the central problem here is that you are being unreasonable. You are judging your boyfriend for something he did when you and he were not in a relationship. You are judging his behavior as…

Excuse me, but what? An 18 year old girl who has not decided to be a virgin until marriage is not a "*kitten*." This is really offensive.
