  • I have eaten all my life a healthy, whole foods ( minimally processed ) diet. I just ate too much of it and think it was around 2000-2200 calories on average. For a person going on 70 and under five feet tall that was too much. I now eat 1200 calories a day and am set for a .5 pound loss a week and have lost 55 pounds in…
  • When I read such stuff on the main boards, where people challenge me or others to " prove it ", I want to tell them to prove that Oreos are indeed healthy. Except.....I no longer can be bothered to get into a discussion with people who only seem to enjoy to put others who want to eat healthier down and only want to prove…
  • I could maybe find merits in such a discussion if I wanted to look really hard. But what wants me to say a few things that surely would get me kicked off MFP ( and nothing would be really inappropriate, but just the truth ) is asking how intelligent people really are who over and over mention that they eat " clean ",…
  • For me it is a question of budget. Yesterday at the store a pound of broccoli was 13.- Mexican Pesos and a pound of Asparagus was 185.- the first is just under a dollar and the second is around 12.- dollars a pound and is usually limp and woody and comes in less than pencil thin stalks. Since all vegetables are healthy, I…
  • To that veggie mix I often add anything Mediterranean or Provencal style. Since I live in Mexico, where those mixes are not readily available I make my own using: 3 tablespoons dried rosemary 2 tablespoons ground cumin 2 tablespoons ground coriander 1 tablespoon dried oregano 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1⁄2 teaspoon salt (…
  • I log everything I eat under normal circumstances. This means I log everything or nothing, like today, because I have the flu and have not yet eaten anything so far. I don't eat a lot of fruit, because I don't care too much for anything sweet. I eat a lot of vegetables ( anywhere from 5-11 servings a day ) and at an…
  • I have learned the hard way that time is not something we " have ", Time is something we " make ". When I was in rehabilitation after losing my thyroid to cancer, which made me super-hypothyroid, my favorite excuse was that I did not have time to exercise. It took almost two years after finally adding walking ( first…
  • I could not agree with you more. Now, in the second half of my 60's I find it much easier to lose weight. Of course my comparison is a bit unbalances because until menopause I was never more than 10 pounds overweight. At the tail end of menopause I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and it took two years to get halfway…
  • As a qualified trainer you also know that the decrease of the rate of metabolism is not as much as it is made out to be. According to statistics women in Western civilized countries should over the ten years after the onset of menopause gain no more than 10 to 15 pounds maximum. Anything more is usually because of poor…
  • That is a very out-of-date image you have of knitting. I belong to the biggest knitting community ( internet ) there is and the average age of a knitter there is 36 years and a few month. Not exactly the " old lady " image you mention. Now, I am going on 70 and knit, but I don't care what people think, because knitting…
  • I do not eat anything low-cal, low-fat or low-carb. When I eat something I eat the real deal, meaning all natural and minimally processed ( with that I mean whole wheat or other grains ground into flour, cabbage fermented naturally into sour kraut, bread baked from sour dough etc ). I do not avoid starchy vegetables, but…
  • I live in a condo since 1998 and ever since have had a container garden. I averaged around 300 containers and grew pretty much everything I needed for my one person household year-around with lots left over to give away. I live in the middle of Mexico City and for me it is wonderful to have such an oasis of green on my…
  • If you can count wine as fruit, can I count walking from the freezer to the sofa with a bowl of ice cream in my hand as weight lifting ?
  • It depends what your goal is. If it is weight loss than it makes no difference, because you mostly watch how much you eat. If it is health then you need to watch what you eat and the mode of preparation plays a big role. I eat for weight loss and health and go for a balance of the two. While I never eat anything deep…
  • lol......Then subjectively speaking nothing is fast food here in Mexico City, because due to a lot of regulations we have no drive throughs. Most of all it is because drive-throughs take away parking space required by law and because that space is at a minimum and because people here don't have the custom to buy fast food…
  • With all due respect, I think you need to be realistic. There is a difference between what you say you eat and what is logged in your food diary. I couldn't find any whole grains, except the prepackaged lentils once, apart from salad no vegetables, did not see the carrots and it seems that you are doing fine with 1500…
  • I am curious on the subject in general. I am a non-native speaker of English and would like to know what the expression really includes. I have American neighbors and they consider for example Rice-a-Roni to be fast food compared to a rice dish cooked from scratch. The same goes for Mac & Cheese from Krafts, while home…
  • I think you are worrying too much. If you usually are right on target then a one time 86-calories over your limit makes absolutely no difference and I feel you should do what a slender person would. They enjoy their meal and move on, because they know that over the long run it all evens out. If you are however ( and…
  • .[/quote] A person who is in-tune with their body typically knows when something is up. If a person is eating frequently, ravenously hungry, gaining weight, etc., it's usually pretty apparent that something is going on with their endocrine system. A person has to see their PCP for a referral anyways. If a person continues…
  • Sorry, this was posted twice....
  • What is it made of, if it has no calories....even if it is less than 5 calories per serving to qualify as calorie free ?
  • I didn't give up anything completely that I ate before, but had a difficult time to limit pasta ( with brown butter, and cheese ), rice ( plain white or brown ) and cheese, Camembert and Gorgonzola above all. I cut it out for a little while and now can handle it without problems once a month or so.
  • One is for weight loss ( moderation if it means caloric deficit ) and the other is for overall /general health. I have eaten a natural diet all my life and still gained weight, because I ate too much of it. I started to eat the same things at a deficit and lost 55 pounds.
  • Don't understand what you are trying to say......or does it matter ?
  • With all due respect towards all, I am sitting here chuckling. I don't understand that " clean " fad at all. I am a German who lives in Mexico with my feet also firmly planted in the French and Spanish culture and must say that outside of MFP I have never heard the term " clean " eating, or met anyone who even mentioned it…
  • I could also with Brussels sprouts being my favorite vegetable right before cauliflower.....:o).
