It's the balance between speed, handling, terrain and to an extent experience. One of the big marketing points about an e-bike is the accessibility to novices, notwithstanding the cost. Personally, 15mph on my roadie or CX is barely breaking sweat, but on the Brompton it's hard going. I've sustained 18 on the Brommie for…

The originator referred to 25kph.

If I'm perfectly honest they don't remotely appeal to me. I have one road bike on my turbo trainer, a road bike, CX bike, mountain bike and a Brompton. The commute that I use the CX for is only 10mi each way, and the benefit of the Brompton is that I can cycle to the station, fold it up to take it in the train, then cycle…

Have fun. Last across the finish line is a finisher.

Runners who gain unexpected weight are eating too much. It is easy to do as appetite can be all over the place. I burned 3200 calories yesterday at an event. There's no way I'd eat that on the day, and even the following day, so it takes some discipline to avoid overdoing it. There is a degree of exercise efficiency, but…

Maybe you and I have different interpretations of I agree

As a cyclist, and motorcyclist, the knowledge that people aren't mentally engaged whilst driving is unsurprising.

Personally I generally camp at races, so for an 0830 race start I'll get up at 0600 and boil up enough water for a couple of pots of ready made porridge, a banana, apple and a couple of cups of coffee. During the race briefing I'll have a gel. I carry two 500ml bottles of tailwind as well.

I wouldn't anticipate that IQ has a bearing. It'd be interesting to see what the effects are. Admittedly N=few anecdata but a couple of hours of standard driving is less fatiguing than a couple of hours of high speed commentary driving.

If you think about it, brain activity is one of the bigger contributors to BMR. If you're focussed on the drive, then you've got more activity.

Your best bet is just to log it as Circuit Training - General. You can't really instrument it.
-
It's the mechanical action. Walking is pretty efficient as a movement.
-
Pace doesn't make any real difference with walking.

Used to be a sea kayak instructor when I was 19/20. Paddling 20-25 miles with a group was hard going.

You're using a fairly limited set of muscles; trunk and shoulders, and it's not weight bearing. With much less need to move oxygen around your body it's not going to be particularly taxing on your heart.

The Fenix estimates running calorie expenditure based on distance and elevation. It uses HR as a corroborating data point, rather than material to the calculation. The Fenix swim tracking elements are the same as those in my 735xt. I've never had a discrepancy.

Aren't you feeling sensitive about this... :)

Elevation in Garmin devices uses the barometric altimeter.

Oh Indeed. It's the long standing engineer Vs marketing issue.

Do you want to be spending money for something with no credible benefit? If yes, then carry on.

A steel rule is more accurate than a plastic rule. How would you use either to determine the colour of my motorbike?
-
So the first point then? I'm still not sure why this is in the debate forum. Doesn't seem to be any debate going on.
-
Oh gods don't. Someone will come out with that one study that suggests greater incidence of heart disease in that extremely small segment of the population that runs frequent marathons and extrapolate from there...
-
So exactly what is the issue that made this something to put in the debate forum? Do you:* Object to gamification as a technique for modifying behaviour? * Object to people subscribing to something related to establishing consistent habits? * Object to the classification of 0900 as early?
-
HR is pretty meaningless to most exercisers, most of the time. It's useful as a training tool if you're working on performance improvement in a particular discipline. For example in a marathon performance improvement plan I'd potentially use effort ranges to define some sessions. The use of HR in stuff like Orange Theory…

I'd question any assumption based on ultra-running.

There are two factors that frequently get conflated when people start giving advice on activity measurement. Accuracy or otherwise of the measurement of HR, and whether that data can be used to extrapolate a meaningful calorie expenditure estimate. Optical (wrist or arm) vs electrical (chest strap) measurement is very…

the VivoFit is waterproof, it's not a swim tacker. I have a Forerunner 735XT multisport that does track swimming. As long as I add the pool length before starting a session I've found it very accurate for distance. It also gives me a measure of stroke efficiency, which is useful for drills training. All that said, it…

Given the type of workout you describe it is extremely unlikely that 600 calories is remotely accurate. Apple watches, and other activity trackers aren't designed in a way that measures that type of activity. Personally I wouldn't bother, just inject it into MFP as circuit training and track your progress,
