  • Building up for my first 10K on August 31st. Have fun with your 5K in October - you'll make it, and it'll be great!
  • First of all, congratulations on running the Sea Wheeze! That is a very popular race - they weren't even accepting more volunteers when I checked it out a few weeks ago. I'm sorry to hear that you experienced such a painful end to a glorious running day. No advice from me at all - I'm just working up to my first 10k at the…
  • Fantastic! You look like such a confident, energetic woman in your new photos. And I LOVE what you are wearing!
  • Thank you for posting this. I have signed up for six "Weight Training for Women" classes at my local community center, and can't wait to get started!
  • Two devilled eggs (two egg whites + one yolk + 1 tablespoon mayo). Yum!
  • WOW! That's a lot of zeros!
  • First of all, that was a GREAT time for your first 5K. Congrats on moving up to the 8K, and surviving the killer overpass. Now go find a 10K and register for it! ;)
  • Wow! Good read. The only transformation photos that matter are the ones you take of yourself, and even then it's important to set up each shot the same way.
  • I LOVE running in the rain! Since I've started (mid-May), we've had exactly two rainy days here - but I live in the Pacific Northwest, and know I'll get all the rain I could possibly want in another few months!
  • Fantastic! Only three days in, and already you've been able to beat the Stress Demon that whispers to you about fast food and unhealthy choices. What an accomplishment for you, and what a priceless gift for your children. You rock!
  • Look at those abs and collarbones! Damn!
  • Grate it and add it to spaghetti sauce or chili - it disappears! If you can't use it all, grate and freeze it in small baggies for future use.
  • If you're generally healthy, you should be fine - I started C25k in May (age 45), finished in early July, and am enjoying running a bit more each week. A neighbour of mine took up running in her early 50s, and has run 25 marathons and many half-marathons since then. She is now 67, and NO ONE believes her age - she looks…
  • Congratulations! That first 5K race is such a personal milestone. Now you'll be hooked, and be on the look out for more runs. I did the C25K program, and ran my first 5K race on July 4th, which was W9D3 of the program - perfect timing! I've done another 5K, and am now aiming for a 10K at the end of this month. Running is…
  • OK, I just ran 9 of the 10k of my walk/run route for today (it was raining, so I was motivated), so I'm signing up for a 10k at the end of August. It will be a small run (maximum 100 participants), and much less intimidating than the big citywide 10k I'm doing in October. I feel FANTASTIC - getting from 5k to 10k is going…

  • Congrats to you for all your progress! I guess it goes to prove that, say, 15 pounds of muscle looks very different from 15 pounds of flab! If you'd lost four pounds through calorie-cutting alone, I bet you wouldn't see or feel any difference, but you've got some hard-won muscles there now. Impressive!
  • Holy mackerel! Great run! It's fun to run in a new place sometimes.
  • I bet you're feeling better! 50 pounds is a very impressive accomplishment - you are on your way to lifelong health!
  • God help me - I just signed up for my first 10k in October. Looking at the course map, 10k sure seems like a l-o-n-g way to run! I finished a C25k program earlier this month, have run two 5k events, and am looking to both increase my distance and improve my 5k times. I know that if I can get from zero to 5k in 9 weeks, I…

  • So good to hear! I am working towards a sprint triathlon in April 2014 (700m swim, 20k bike, 5k run), and understand EXACTLY what you mean about the dreaded last-place finish. I am a weak swimmer, so to be honest, just completing the event will be a huge success, but no one wants to be last. Your accomplishment encourages…
  • Just got back from Animé Expo in L.A. I didn't attend (I will own up to being a techie, but don't know that I've earned the geek title), but my 15-year-old son did. It sure looked like fun! I wandered over to the convention center one day, just to admire all the cosplay outfits. Amazing!
  • A bunch of us had the exact same experience - it seems to be a common stumbling point. Does your C25K program go back to intervals after the W5D3 20-minute run? That might be part of the problem. Keep on going - it WILL get better again.

  • Done! I accomplished all three goals: I ran the entire distance, I finished in under 40 minutes (36:16), and wasn't dead last. What a great way to complete W9D3! It was a lot of fun, and I can't wait to do another one. Thanks for the encouragement!
  • Good point, Zanne54! Personal bests are great! BTW, I assume from your profile picture that you play hockey. So do i! Not well, but I play. Love it!
  • It gets better - it really does. For me, the first couple minutes of any run are tough - I feel out of breath, and uncoordinated. After 2 - 3 minutes, though, things smooth out, and the run becomes simple. The problem is that, for the first few weeks of C25K, you don't run long enough to get past the "I think I'm dying"…
  • As I'm switching from my fall/winter wardrobe to my spring/summer clothes, I'm bundling up all the winter clothes and donating them to Goodwill. Some of them are already too large for me, and the rest of them will definitely be too big by the time the weather cools off again. I look forward to buying some new, smaller…
  • Richmond, BC - hello from the Wet Coast!
  • Fantastic! I'm impressed with the way you talked yourself into continuing after the headphone failure; I know it sounds like a small thing, but routine is EVERYTHING, and music was clearly an important part of your routine. Just imagine how you'll do when all the hardware is working!
  • You ran 33:xx in your first 5k? That is impressive! I'm running my first 5k on the last day of my C25K program, and will be delighted if I finish in under 40 minutes.
  • I'll be delighted when I weigh less than my son for the first time! He's 15 and still growing, so I should pass him on the way down soon.
