  • Could be you built up muscle during the workouts that contributed to your body burning more calories in general. If I recall correctly, muscle uses more energy just to exist than an equal weight of fat would. Or it could be water weight. Or it could be the lack of stress.
  • Night times for me, too. Out of nothing but habit. I work evenings and sometimes all night, too, so I have to be extra careful about throwing in second dinners or snacking all night :)
  • You're 5'7" and you want to be 109lbs? Yeah, ok. Totally reasonable (insert sarcasm). At 125lbs, I doubt you need anything more than to tone up and build muscle. But do what you want; it's your body.
  • Yeah, but what are you measuring? As in, what parts of your body? An increase could be attributed to an increase in muscle without a decrease in fat, especially if you are pear shaped and doing something like squats. Doesn't mean you shouldn't be building the muscles, though. When you do lose the fat, you'd have lovely…
  • Same thing happened to my friend and she didn't have any wiggle room, either, or so she thought. She got pregnant, threw up loads and lost about 10 pounds before confirming she was pregnant. When she lost an additional 10 pounds whilst seeing her doctor, she questioned him about the weight loss and whether she should be…
  • Italian ice from the grocery store is pretty low in calories -- maybe 80 per serving. Popsicles are also low in calories. You can go either for the 10 cal tubes of colored sugar water (the kind you need scissors to cut the top off of and then they sort of slice the inside corners of your lips) or the fruit bar style pops…
  • Eat what you like to eat. Some people eat what they've always eaten, but in appropriate portions. Some people go veg or vegan. Some people start a paleo/primal thing. Others cut way down on carbs while focusing on protein. Others eat mainly fat. Some people eat primarily carbs with very little fat and protein. Some people…
  • How often do you measure, how much have they gone up, what are you measuring?
  • Fake sugar has calories, just look on the back of a splenda packet. It will say something about only being zero calories in servings smaller than 1/4 of a cup. Diet soda gets labeled as zero calories because the number of calories in a standard serving is considered insignificant. Mustard is often labeled as zero calories,…

  • I wouldn't say that, necessarily, but it depends entirely on what you mean by short term and low calories, as well as your starting point and various personal variables. I'm not sure why I find reading studies fun, but there is an interesting study on starvation from the 1940s. And by starvations, I mean 1600 calories per…
  • Me too! Some days I'll go crazy and other days I will eat like a rabbit, but I'm learning to just look at my weekly average to stay on tack. Its realy helped with the 'bad' days where I felt justified in spiralling into super-bad days because they were already ruined anyway. I think that all or nothing mentality is what…
  • Double post
  • I feel for you, man. I can't even buy drumsticks because I will consume them all. I don't even enjoy ice cream all that much really, but those things are like my crack. But the rest of it gets better. My roommate frequently makes cookies or brownies, which would be fine, but she leaves them out on the counter. I used to…
  • Almonds and cashews except in smaller amounts?

  • Might you have a pinched nerve? I have a nerve that pinches in my elbow of both arms and it causes a sort of numb/tingly feeling in my pinky, ring finger, and that side of my hands. It's not quite pins and needles, and it doesn't hurt, but it is unpleasant. And although the never can pinch throughout the day, I mostly feel…
  • You really have to track everything to figure out how much you're eating. I even had to stop guessing at amounts because sometimes my 1/2 cup that I wrote down was closer to a cup. Get a food scale, it makes your life so much easier. I got fat eating primarily healthy foods, just in totally crazy proportions. Hopefully…
  • You've been at it 2 weeks and you've lost 3 pounds?! That sounds great to me... Am I missing something?
  • This. You mentioned they aren't on the same page, but will eat all of your food? Sounds like they can be inadvertently on the same page! I don't find it any more work to make a large pot of soup as opposed to a small one; I say just make enough for everyone to enjoy.
  • If you're just binging out of habit, you can try to schedule activities in the evening so you can't binge, or at least are less likely to. Game night with friends, long bath, walk in the park, movie, whatever you enjoy. Especially if you're with others, you will be less likely to spend the evening eating if you're doing…
  • Don't buy the quick-cook version of anything -- lentils, rice, beans, oatmeal, etc. It's much cheaper. Buying dry goods in larger quantities usually works out cheaper too, assuming you have the pantry space for it.
  • Is the water you've tracked in your diary accurate to what you're drinking, or are you drinking more than that? Sometimes, if you're retaining water (making you heavier on the scale), drinking more water can help with it, as well as reducing sodium and carbs.
  • Just a word to the wise, if you think it might be Celiac Disease, don't cut out gluten until you speak with your doctor. A lot of people cut out gluten because they think they have it, then go to get their blood tested for it, and then end up testing negative. Except then they don't know if they've tested negative because…
  • I could have some of this wrong, but here's what I understand. Low calorie consumption over a long period of time will cause your body to consume the vast majority of your fat stores and then start catabolizing your lean tissue. Eventually, I believe, it gets to your organs, too. What seems to be a common knee-jerk…
  • I would say, with the exception of very substantial desserts like muffins, you can't substitute whole wheat flour entirely in dessert recipes. In my opinion, any way. I've had good luck with half whole wheat flour and half unbleached in denser cookies and things with texture. I stupidly tried to make a pie crust (for…
  • Asparagus. Grilled or roasted. Not steamed. And no sauces or weirdness. And I'm the only one who likes it so I get it all to my greedy self. I do not, however, like the smell of my pee afterwards. But its good, in a way, because I chug water after I eat it to get rid of the smell as fast as possible :) I'm also learning to…
  • I really don't think anyone meant to imply that we are all genetically equal. Some people are definitely more advantaged than others. Some people have something working against them. I think the argument is, despite your advantages, or lack there of, everybody (barring a few medical anomolies) loses or gains weight the…
  • This might be an unpopular opinion, but if you're saying 20+ shots are a possibility, I'd suggest switching to beer. Its more calories per drink, but you'll have to drink far fewer. Beer is sort of self limiting. When people say its liquid bread, they aren't joking. Its filling. Of course, that assumes you aren't a puke…
  • This is a big thing for me. One thing that really helps me is to look at my calories for the whole week, not just the day. My tendency is, when I feel like I've messed up for the day, is to mess it up with a vengeance. Keeping in mind the whole week, though, means that I screw up today, compensate for it tomorrow (or over…
  • Check out the amount of fibre in your cereal, too. Sometimes it can be really high. If you start to get unpleasant symptoms from too much fibre, I'd switch up my breakfast before I'd lose the fruits and veg. Oh, and keep in mind the fibre per serving size. 2 cups of cereal is probably at least two servings.
  • I can appreciate that your finances are tied together, but I also feel like he is an adult that deserves to make his own decisions and succeed or fail. I know its not the same, but if you were really excited about getting a personal trainer, and he kept telling you to just work out at home, how would you feel? Maybe a…
