  • I agree with everyone who recommended interval training - fartleks, tracks, etc. Fast, than slow. You're kind of doing a variation of it in the beginning of C25K programs by alternating walking and running. I also agree with the more miles getting you faster as well - I started doing a C25K in June '13. I was doing…
  • Actually, Maine declared war on Canada at one point - it's called the Aroostook War. There are pockets in the Appalachia that are the only places in the world where the English spoken is linguistically closet to the English spoken during Shakespere's days. Amish country, anyone? And as a New Englander who has lived in…
  • You can walk or run with the stroller, yogadownload.com, or any of the things others have already suggested. Good luck. :)
  • They've done similar things for Europeans/Aussies and placing the states within the United States. Geographically speaking, a lot of our states are bigger than European countries so I'd say it's pretty even. Also, when I lived in Europe I had lots of people be like: "what do you mean you've never been to LA"? - which is…
  • Oh my god *please* wear deodorant.
  • "Rest day" does not have to = sit on your butt in front of the television day. I run and cross train regularly, and I do take rest days, but a rest day for me is... yoga, or walking to work. I still exercise, just on a less intense level. The key is really to figure out what works for your mind and body. I'd run every day…
  • I forgive myself because I've been in maintenance before and learned that it takes more than just one cheat day every now and then to gain weight. Part of the learning curve is recognizing when you have eaten poorly and that you can't do that every day. But doing it every other week or so won't break your scale, promise.…
  • Not socializing isn't a long term solution - learn how to eat right at these parties and you're less likely to gain weight next year when you're in maintenance at this time.
  • For a 5K with that temp I'd wear: - cold weather tights and another layer of pants - wind pants? - long sleeved cold weather top - a jacket - a wicking hat - neck warmer thing - gloves ... but I also probably wouldn't run below "feels like" 0F. Bbbbrr.
  • My undergrad is in history, and I'm willing to bet Mr. Rude _john_ doesn't know how to write, analyze, or research at the same level as a history major. I work in immigration policy analysis and I actually use my history degree on a regular basis.
  • No food is the devil, it's all about moderation. I can't eat wheat, so rice is a staple of my diet, either in its "pure" form or as rice noodles, etc. I cook with white because brown tastes weird with all the curries I make.
  • Doctors recommend you do not lose more than 2 lbs a week - 60 pounds in 6 months works out to 2.5 lbs a week. Also, generally speaking, the more realistic your diet is the more likely you are to keep it off. So yea, it might be possible to lose 60 lbs in that time frame - but the moment you stop eating such a low calorie…
  • I'm blind as a bat (can't see more than six inches in front of my face other than blurry colors), and I just swim without the glasses. If you're doing laps, you have lanes to follow which are physical reminders that you don't even need to see. It takes getting used to, but it's doable. If you must, you can get contacts and…
  • I don't really know what her weight or appearance has to do with the situation - so definitely don't mention it. Just ask if you can use the machine after her so she knows that you're waiting for it. If she is non responsive and still hogs the machine, talk to the management. (Though there's not much they do really, other…
  • policy assistant. I do immigration policy research.
  • After my vitamins: - Trader Joes 100 calorie chocolate bars - Jack's Hard Cider - Greek Yogurt (this actually entertains me to no end)
  • Boobs first, regardless. Which is obnoxious because I didn't have much to begin with. The rest of it depends on what my primary work out is (and probably hormonal differences as I'm on birth control this time). This time around running is my big thing and I have very little fat on my thighs and butt now and I'm starting to…
  • Unless it is my rest day, I don't usually log walking to/from the metro or biking to work (I live in a city and don't have a car).
  • You would use a pepper spray for street harassment? I'd run out of pepper spray - I get cat called/harassed almost every day. I don't actually think that in the eyes of the law, pepper spray is an appropriate response to cat calling.
  • I'm glad you're back on track for being healthy and thank you for sharing! Hopefully people also going down that route read this before they experience the same thing.
  • My big concern with pepper spray is how windy it is where I live. There's a lot of blow back on the person using it - you're supposed to spray it while stepping back to avoid it - and with wind, I'd be too afraid of injuring myself to use it effectively! Take a self-defense course and learn how to effectively make…
  • I'm not saying be supportive of self destructive behavior. I'm saying phrase your disagreement in a way that doesn't invalidate their experience with their own body. It's easy enough to do with wording.
  • I'm *super* active (training for a half marathon, strength training twice a week, yoga, walking/cycling everywhere) and frequently take off for 14 mile hikes. Yes, I'm trying to lose weight: but I absolutely need to eat back my calories or I don't have enough to fuel all the crazy **** I do. I know this seems counter…
  • @LadyZephyr - Thank you! @dynamitegalxo - The studio is Cirque du Rouge in Washington, D.C. (they do tour for some conventions as well). However, Cyn, my artist is the owner of the studio as well and is so busy she's not taking on new clients at the moment.
  • You shouldn't necessarily draw your own tattoo. I mean, you can, if you have that ability. But tattoo artists aren't xerox machines - they're artists. Find one that is good, that will work with your idea, and talk to them about it. I can't draw worth ****, but my tattoo artist is amazing.
  • I have sixteen hours of ink on me. I've never done flash though - I think about what I want and what it means to me, then I go and talk to the artist. I've found one I like a lot who has done most of my work at this point. We make a consult, I bring her or e-mail her some pictures that are close to what I had in mind, then…
  • That's a great time! Congrats!
  • Nope. I still drink. I discovered that Jack's Hard Cider is 5.5% and has 100 calories per can. That's some value... ;-)
  • Three weeks of trekking in Nepal, reaching an altitude of 5,416 metres (17,769 ft). High altitude trekking is terrifying. Bungee jumping, sky diving, and quitting my job in the middle of a recession to do all this.
