I do take a vitamin D supplement, but only because I have a deficiency shown in my blood tests. And this was despite spending 8 to 10 hours outside in the sun running a week, being fair skinned, and living in an area with sunny days 90+% of the year ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I guess I do a good job slathering myself in sunscreen and…

Those that see me at work would think I'm naturally thin... except they knew me when I was 65 lbs heavier. At work events, I usually eat the most and I'm one of the thinnest individuals in my group (5"10", 150 lbs). Of course, what most don't see is that I have almost nothing for dinner on those days and that I eat more…

I think this is part of the key issue with the preponderance and perpetuation of misinformation. It feeds into what people want to believe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjKsz34PDn0

From the studies and observations I've seen, the "naturally skinny" aren't any less efficient in converting food to energy. Their behaviors are different though, resulting in lower calorie intakes and/or a higher TDEE. They just to be natural behaviors and habits that the person doesn't put much thought into.

I'm wary of its effectiveness barring any studies which show otherwise. The sum of the body of research I found came to the same conclusion as @Orphia. I do find it ironic that given this forum group's reliance and call to scientific research when claims are made, the only person to bring up actual studies instead of their…

Heavily concur. I've run 2200 miles so far this year and biked about 700. Out of that, about 200 miles were not run alone, and 170 of that was because I was in a race. A nice group run with folks who run at a similar pace is a nice break sometimes, but for the most part, I run because I enjoy it and the results. Plus I…

Yes, 90% of my water intake is from coffee, diet soda, or those flavored sparkling water drinks (which are basically just fruit flavored diet sodas...). As best as I can tell since the original source doesn't seem to be known, the 8 cups of water a day was meant to be a general suggestion for the total amount of water you…

Many foods high in important micro-nutrients (i.e. fruits/vegetables) contain significant amounts of natural sugars. And we humans enjoy eating those foods with sugar because they are a good source of calories. We have taste buds specifically to taste sweetness.

My daily calorie "goal" can range from anywhere to 2300 calories (rest day) to over 5000 calories (running an ultramarathon), so yeah, I do weekly goal. I do somewhat of a hybrid between TDEE and daily goals. My gross calorie intake is usually lower on a rest day, but my net is higher, and vice versa on a long run day. To…

I'm passing on the mashed potatoes and only having a little turkey to make more room for ham, pie, and jalapeno cornbread. I think it's funny the number of people who only read the title of the thread and are commenting that they aren't going to skip anything and think this is a thread about not indulging on…

At this point, training volume and a higher MPW would result in your greatest improvements to time. I made my biggest improvements to my 5k time by training for a half marathon, and then another big improvement by training for marathons/50ks. I cut out speed work and concentrated on adding mileage when I trained for my…

It's not healthy for the person who ruins my steak by turning it into leather.

When I did listen to music while running, I would use Yurbuds. They are designed to allow ambient noise to still be heard and were inexpensive. The old style earbuds with foam work well at letting in ambient noise too. Many earbuds are the type that seal to your ear canal, so even with them on low they still tend to block…

The portion sizes must be smaller compared to what I see at the typical places in my area in the United States. The "small" portions still have giant bowls that have 5-7 cups worth of pho in them (or 1.2-1.5L of soup for you folks in the civilized world). I usually get around ~700 calories per bowl for my estimates, but…

If it's a place that has a dish similar to a chain place where I am familiar with the food and serving portion, I will use that information for the estimate. However, many places I go that do not have a chain restaurant equivalent (Vietnamese/Korean/Japanese/Thai/Indian). In these cases, I use recipes that look similar to…

There is no real calorie difference in running the same path in the cold or hot weather. This is one of the limitations on HRM based calorie calculations. Your HR is affected by weather, but the HRM has no way of knowing that the difference in HR is due to weather and not doing more/less work, so it tends to overestimate…

Yes, I could only carry so much 50% off candy from the drugstore in arms. I should have brought my bag. The selection was somewhat limited too as they were concentrating on putting out the Christmas candy

This isn't it, but it demonstrates a similar concept. People eat more than they think. When I first started tracking with a food scale, it was pretty damn clear why I had gained weight. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KA9AdlhB18o When our office has pizza parties, it's me, the thinnest one, who is eating the most pizza.…

Yes. I haven't heard of more scammy school since Trump University folded. All of things being taught are either outright made up, or misapplication, misinterpretation, or drastic overstating of real scientific studies and current scientific evidence that sounds sciency enough to be believable to the layperson but doesn't…

As a lover of good Pho, I feel like "Pho" on that packaging should have a big asterisk next to it. That looks like like 76 calories of sadness and self loathing.

I was in the hospital for less than a week, and could eat, and they still put me on a drip when I came in because my weight was so low. I cannot imagine they would not do the same for someone who could not eat for that length of time. And yes, I logged it...

60+ lbs lost and weight maintained for closing in on 6 years while getting my "water" almost exclusively from diet drinks (including plenty of diet A&W) and coffee. ETA: And apart from a vitamin D deficiency which runs in my family, my blood work for my last check up was exemplary.

Same here. Here it is with an actual weight serving of ice cream next to an "ice cream bowl" which is basically big enough to fit an entire 2 quart container...

I found that when I first started running, it was the same. I needed something to distract me. I always had music going. It took time for me to love running, and a change in how I approach it. Now, I do it and it's my ME time, time to contemplate, and time to just enjoy being outside and enjoy some scenery. I don't even…

Given the use of the word "SCIENCE" (in all caps nonetheless) in the title, he made damn unscientific assertions and extrapolations of the results of the scientific papers well beyond reason. It's clear he has limited understanding of biology and how to extrapolate scientific data. * He states that in the study of a…

Like the others, I just concentrate on hitting my minimum for protein and let the other numbers fall where they will. I used to look at hitting my minimum on fats as well when I first started paying attention to macros, but given what I typically eat and my calorie needs to maintain, I don't even have to try so I don't pay…

I can see confusion on some things where the typical amount eaten is one package (e.g. a 20 oz soda, although I'd argue that it's our perception of serving size that is the issue there...), but you mistook something that was 100 calories/serving and had 25 servings in a box as a single serving, and that their issue...?…

The diet A&W root beer or cream soda are excellent choices as well. But the Cherry Vanilla Coke Zero I can only get from the Coke Remix machines is king. Speaking of which, I plan on having about 64 oz of it along with my pizza and salad for lunch. It's a fairly high calorie meal, but it would probably be double the number…
