I am down 68 lbs from my highest weight (215 lbs), which put me in the obese range. And I got fat eating mostly due to overindulging in high fat Mexican food, not due to sweets. I eat more sugar now than I ever did when I was obese, mostly due to my increased fruit consumption. I'm now on year 6 of maintaining my weight…

@RuNaRoUnDaFiEld @CSARdiver, do you have a source for the statement that alcohol is metabolized first? Not an expert in this area, but in my Google-fu, I've seen that it is metabolized preferentially as quickly as possibly, limited by the toxic acetaldehyde intermediate (source: http://hams.cc/metabolism/ ), but nothing…

But strawmen are so much easier to attack.
-
Source for the first statement? I've heard this before, but I have never seen where this comes from. Just going by alcohol metabolism rates, and some common sense, this seems unlikely to impossible. At my weight (150 lbs), 3 shots of 80 proof liquor at 291 calories would take 5-6 hours to metabolize. My sedentary TDEE is…

I ran extra miles yesterday to fit in calories for pizza. I'm not even sorry.

For me, I think of it like balancing my budget (my calorie budget in this case). I can still budget and enjoy going shopping or buying things I like. But it gives me the data I need to do it responsibly, spend money on things that are worth it, and still meeting my financial goals.

I've been counting calories/macros for 6+ years. I still enjoy food. A lot.

I'm being discriminated against as a thin person in the US! I had to special order my pants because stores don't carry the right size. Plenty of sizes in stock for the clinically overweight/obese though (the sizes I used to wear). And half of the brands of clothes don't even sell a size I can wear due to vanity sizing. The…

Citation? Diet adherence can be an issues with too many foods that are highly palatable and not satiating (I am not a fan of the terminology "processed" as that is too arbitrary), but I've seen no conclusive evidence that there is a material difference in CO.
-
I don't run 40-60 miles per week so I can choke down a bunch kale.
-
Experiment and figure out what diet triggers, if any, cause issues for you. Any large, spicy meals cause issues for me the following day, even without running. Mexican or Indian the day before a long run, never again...

I think the problem here is even the same jobs have lower amounts of physical activity than they did years ago, as others have mentioned. A desk job in the 70s or 80s included more walking around and socializing. Now, with the advent of computers and internet, the socializing is done while they sit, and folks are less…

The impression that the authors have an agenda is further reinforced in the discussion portion of their study. Despite declines in NEAT over the years and issues with dietary recall accuracy, they theorize chemicals (OMG, chemikills!), prescription drugs, and microbiome changes for the reasons why we are fatter, instead of…

It seems to all be based on data from guided, but self reported, information on food and activity, which are notoriously unreliable. And outside of the recalled and reported physical activity used in the study, folks in general are less active, which effects TDEE. Link to the actual study:…

The Garmin algorithm without the HRM is poor in my experience. It overestimates by quite a lot. The following formula based on running energy expenditure studies has been reliable for me based on years of logging data at various mileages.: Net Calories = 0.63 * Distance in Miles * Weight in Lbs My Garmin 920 matches that…

Wittrock's "experiment" has multiple issues, including poor tracking and no calorie baseline at all, as was discussed in the previous thread while it was ongoing. http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10515890/ketogenic-overfeeding-n-1-experiment-by-wittrock/p1 And Feltham? Holy crap. To say he looks like an…

You would think this is the case, but Garmin is always way high unless it has my HR data to use instead. Likewise with Strava, although Strava ignores HR in it's calorie calculations anyway so it's always off even with HR data available. It almost seems as though they are spitting out gross calorie burns instead of net or…

I had patellar tendonitis from running. In my case, it was a case of doing too much too fast and racing all of my training runs as a newer runner. I had decent cardiovascular capacity from other exercises, but no leg conditioning. Icing and slowing down my training runs to more appropriate paces let it slowly heal. Now I…

If your profile is private, your ticker is not viewable unless you post it somewhere. MFP is hostile, so you don't log your food here which requires zero social interaction, but you do come onto the public forums, and the Debate Forum of all places... this makes no sense. Nobody is going to waste their time posting studies…

"Science". You keep using that word, but I do not think it means what you think it means. It doesn't mean you get to cherry pick studies, say they are facts, and ignore the large body of evidence that refutes what you are saying. It also does not mean you can make a claim and back it up with a study that does not back your…

Does it need to be a chest strap? I use the Scosche Rhythm+ with my Garmin, and have used it with my phone before. It's an optical HRM that supports BT as well as ANT+ and can be worn on the wrist or arm which some find more comfortable. I got it mostly because I got sick of my Garmin chest strap dying every 4 months. It's…

Or not... and the thin folks are eating fewer calories and more active than you actually think and the obese are in denial about what they are actually eating... https://youtu.be/KA9AdlhB18o https://youtu.be/bYJrC3RTtgQ

Normally I stay in a 3 lb range when I weigh every morning, but I swing quite a lot of water weight with glycogen depletion/refueling for races and long training runs. I look at long term trends to determine if I'm actually maintaining. When I initially started maintaining, I had to up my calories a bit because I was…

The Garmin Vivoactive HR also included a barometric altimeter.
-
For lower intensity exercises like walking or hiking, an HRM is not going to provide an accurate calorie burn. HR based calorie burns are only reasonable for steady state, moderate intensity cardio such as running. And even then there are caveats and limitations to the accuracy. I'll second that a good phone app or…

The multiplier for running is 0.63. This gives the NET calories burned, which is what you would be interested in for logging exercise calories. http://www.runnersworld.com/weight-loss/how-many-calories-are-you-really-burning In metric, it should be Net Cal = 0.87 * Weigh in kg * Distance in km if I did the conversions…

* Citation needed. Meal timing can affect adherence and energy levels for workouts, but meal timing with the same food eaten has not been shown to affect weight/fat loss in any well controlled study to date that I have seen and is not supported in the current body of research. * You are now introducing what you eat into…

That calorie burn actually sounds about right. A 160 lb person (and you look like you probably weigh quite a bit less), would burn ~1500 calories for a 50km walk (Net Calories Burned Walking = 0.30 * Weigh in pounds * Distance Walked in Miles).

I am currently maintaining around my racing weight (5'10", 150 lbs). It should be noted that the advice on there is targeted towards maximizing RUNNING performance though, not aesthetics or balancing against other fitness goals. At my running racing weight, I'm faster, but that compromised my lifting performance and upper…

At 3 weeks out, the fitness building part of your training is already there. 10 mile tempos and 12 miles hilly doesn't sound "chilled out" the week after :p I would have probably done a shorter tempo run in that case to give myself some recovery. I'm assuming you are following a 3 week taper and plan on racing the…
