I second the recommendation for a HRM. I have a Polar and love it for tracking my workouts. I've had both fitbit and body media but I kept losing or accidently washing the former and I found the latter uncomfortable to wear. At the moment, I'm using the Withings activity tracker and I like it.

I'm not sure this is actually true either. Epigenetics would indicate that we might be quite a bit more individual than you're allowing here. http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/epigenetics/ "As an organism grows and develops, carefully orchestrated chemical reactions activate and deactivate parts of the genome at…

For me, if I can get ahold of a good latte or cappuccino, I don't require any added sugar, something I haven't been able to manage with drip coffee so I tend to stick with that. It helps that I've got a decent setup at home to make myself espresso drinks.

My wife swears by Kleen Kantine and, I must say, it does a great job of retaining heat or cold over long periods of time. http://www.kleankanteen.com/

Regardless of the issues with calorie burning estimates, if you want to know what heart rate zones you're in during a workout, an HRM is a must.

Strength training, I think.

Wahoo Fitness and 4iiii both have bluetooth HRMs if you want to use them with smartphone apps. The Polar H7 is bluetooth as well.

I've got the Withings activity tracker and I like it. It can be worn on the wrist or in a pocket, bra, wherever.

I've recently given up diet soda after having been a steady Diet Coke drinker for years. I don't miss it much. I enjoy coffee but I don't drink a ton of it, maybe a cup every other day or so in the form of an espresso-based drink, usually a cappuccino or latte.

I tried Atkins a long time ago and it worked but I didn't stick with it and gained it all back. You might look at the paleo-style nutrition/diets-- there's a ton of resources out there. I'm not sure how it compares to Atkins (I remember so little of it now) but it is also a low-carb style diet if that's what you're looking…

Really, I have no idea but since the idea is bursts of high intensity, you might not want to extend those too far. Maybe instead just shorten the rests in between?

Mine as well. I don't usually run but walk and I can look at the HR charting afterwards and know where the ascents are from how my heart rate spikes. To the OP, definitely use a HRM to get an accurate view of your calories burned. I often use Runmeter in addition to an HRM and the calorie outputs can vary sometimes.…

I'm about a week and a half into the program. I like it. I do wish there were less talky versions of the routines. For those that have them: are the audio files just rips from the videos or are they different? I still have trouble engaging everything all the time but, I hope, I'll get better and it will come more naturally…

I've got that book but I haven't had a chance to try it much yet. As others have said, for HIIT, you want to go hard for X seconds, rest for Y seconds, with Y being some multiple of X usually, for beginners maybe 2X, or maybe 1/2X if you're in good shape. So something like burpies for 2 minutes, 1 minute rest, etc. You…

If you have a smartphone that supports it, you can look for a bluetooth HRM, such as this one: http://www.wahoofitness.com/devices/wahoo-tickr-heart-rate-strap.html There are a good number of apps that you can use without having to buy another device to display/log the heart rate data.

I'm not positive I get the question but I think it will estimate the number of calories burned but I think that these estimates are very rough and not reliable. Not sure if you can pair one up with a heart monitor but I think using a heart monitor will make the estimates much more accurate.

Have you tried a milk/espresso based drink? I find that I can drink a good latte or cappuccino without any sugar whereas I can't with regular coffee. (For reference, my idea of a good espresso is found nowhere near a Starbucks.)
