  • I think that's when skipping breakfast is a bad idea, for sure! I agree with the posters who say this varies by person; it really does. Some people will overeat, be cranky, and have a very unhealthful day if they start off on the 'wrong' foot without breakfast. Others will be able to power through their day and make great…
  • Awesome. You must be one of those "natural runners" that I envy so much! LOL Take advantage of what nature gave you, and keep running!!
  • Gotcha. Were you a runner before, or did you just run that mile randomly? I know my runner friends can take breaks and come back in more easily than total newbies starting out, kwim?
  • So you've only been running for 2 days, and you ran the full 5K? That's a great time, if I'm understanding you! Great job!
  • Pretty much. It's wise to put a little strategy to it, though. If you put good things in your mouth, you get to eat a lot more of them to get to 1200-1300 calories. If you put junk in your mouth, you don't get to eat much, and you'll be hungrier with less energy.
  • I am not a slave to the logging, but I generally log, and I eat my exercise calories back. The way I look at it, if I didn't eat them back (but didn't create TOO big a deficit, unhealthily), I suppose I would lose ever so slightly faster. But in eating my calories, I'm enjoying life so much more. So I suppose that's the…
  • I think both statements are true in their sense "fast food is making us fat," & "our choice to eat fast food is making us fat." I kind of find this semantics, TBH. I believe everyone who says "fast food is bad," etc, gets that it's actually the choice of putting it in mouths that matters. For that matter, why not say "the…
  • In general, it's not what I want to do, but I don't think it's a big deal if others do it. BUT, all those people who recommend it-- they also say DO NOT do it if you are overweight. DO NOT do it with blankets and pillows on your bed. DO NOT do it with a regular bed, put your matress on the floor alone. While I'm sure it's…
  • My realist and best advise is: DO BETTER. You don't have to be perfect. You CAN'T be perfect, so don't goal it and set yourself up for failure. Be better than you were yesterday, you CAN do it! (If I can say one more thing, it's worry about measurements and how your clothes fit instead of worshipping the scale!)
  • lol! Awesome! I totally bought it. I thought-- "now we really have heard EVERY excuse!!" lol
  • Well, if you're already jogging, of course you can skip the first few weeks. I just meant if you're already in just generally good cardiovascular shape, that DOESN'T mean your knees, back, etc, are prime for jogging, kwim? I would start on week 5 or 6. You're not just starting jogging, you're just going to be starting to…
  • I am on week 6, but I want to answer anyway, as I have started and stalled the program before, and I think I've learned a few things! 1) Was it easier or harder than you expected? Both. Easier in that running is kind of self-motivating (for me) once I get to the point that I'm running more than walking. It feels great and…
  • Yes. Really, there are a million variables, this is like how people say that eating right is 80%, working out is only 20%-- well, that's only true if you hardly work out, used to eat a LOT, and move to eating way less. Otherwise it is not true, and has no bearing on my (for instance) reality. How did you eat before? If you…
  • Yep! You really can't know which of those is lower cal. I like to just not worry about it once in a while, and this would be the night for it. I would not recommend grilling the hosts about nutritional information. :) It looks like a GREAT menu, just thank them for having you, and enjoy.
  • I agree with this. Though I have to post to ask what diet tea is! Do you mean less/no sugar or honey? I'm under the impression that tea doesn't really have any calories, if any a neglegible amount. Am I wrong? I have never logged it! LOL
  • No, it's not the same thing, I agree. But the intent is. If commenting that someone has lost weight is admitting your mental image of them is fat, then complimenting a haircut is saying their old haircut was not so great. I don't think either is true-- I'm just pointing out that if the principal is true in one place, it's…
  • That's funny! Fteale, you should start a thread/poll. LOL I think everyone I know is happy to hear "have you lost weight?" Or "you look like you've lost weight!" etc. Without question. When you get a new haircut and someone compliments it, do you take it as meaning that they thought your hair was ugly before? Is it rude to…
  • I think that's at least 95% untrue. Almost every woman I know likes people to notice (& comment) on their weight loss.
  • I think breakfast is REALLY that important IF breakfast is really that important TO YOU. I don't think there's anything magical about breakfast, I don't think it speeds your metabolism, or any of the other touted benefits. I just think some people find themselves starving, and eat a lot more, when they skip breakfast...…
  • I think when people say things, their intent generally matters. You can be offended and put off, or you can think of the compliment he was trying to give, and just accept it happily. I do the latter, and I just think it's the easier and happier way to be. BUT, I'm often at odds with people on this website, who often get…
  • I do it all the time! (eta: And don't want to stop. :) I consider it quite healthy!)
  • PB & celery with chocolate chips, almonds, apples.
  • I didn't with my first two, but with my third, my skin broke out like crazy. Finally, my friends suggested taking a pg test simply because of it LOL, and low and behold... BFP.
  • Oh, I 100% agree about Vitamin D! I make sure we get plenty of exposure to the sun, and in the winter, I take a supplement and give one to my kids as needed. I was just surprised at the tanning bed suggestion part of it. Good luck with your levels!
  • Your doctor recommends a tanning bed for you? I'm a believer in the sun, but never tanning beds. Is there new research to indicate they're not as bad? Or do you just live in a climate that it's impossible to get sunlight, so it's worth the risk?
  • I think this seems kind of like telling an overweight friend that they are overweight. Why do you feel a need to do it? Do you think they don't know they are overweight (or in this case, that they are not succeeding at healthy eating?)? Do you think they are truly ignorant that potato chips (or whatever) are nutritionally…
  • C25K. C25K. C25K!! No one jumps out and runs (well, almost no one). Even in great cardiovascular shape, you still have to build up to really running. The C25K kept me in line-- I followed the rules, without jumping ahead, and taking breaks when needed, and it's SO much better on my knees, back, and feet than my tries in…
  • I'm not a big believer in vitamins unless you have a specific deficiency. I do take Vit D sometimes in the winter (living in a cold Northern climate, I think that's real necessary for a lot of us), and sometimes I'll pop some Omega 3s, but I'm not as certain that I need those. It's so much better, they're finding more and…
  • I think of it as "me time." I've always been an optimist in a lot of ways, and I think it really helps most situations in life to just train yourself to think about them in the best way possible. I think that's absolutely, absolutely possible. We all make time for something if it's really meaningful to us, maybe not…
