  • I don't think it matters much. Total calories in versus out. I train at lunch, so I have my biggest meal of the day after workout. There are some conflicting reports about pre and post exercise meal timing. I sort of side on eat something right after training or have a whey protein before and after strength training.
  • I'm in a bit of the same boat. I lifted heavy 3 times per week while losing 40 lbs over 6 months. According to my body fat scales, I lost about 6 pounds of muscle. So i'm working now on adding some muscle. Some will disagree, but I think it is inevitable to lose some muscle. The heavy lifting and not too large a deficit,…
  • Also depends on your current routine and fitness level. I can easily do 1 hour elliptical or run 5 miles in 40 minutes 3 times a week. There are lots of good running sites about how to increase running gradually to avoid injuries. Now that I'm doing squats 3x5 3 times a week and soccer on Fridays. I just do elliptical 2…
  • I've been down the road on doing cardio, eating alot, and strength training many times. Even if you eat a lot, my experience is cardio and strength training / muscle building are different types of adaptations and counteract one another a bit. If you are a newbie to both, you can do both well. If you are intermediate or…
  • To increase my count I did 2 or 3 sets of decline situps. I found this to help alot. So it's like big lifting, you do fewer reps but you are doing more weight per say. I like to do the situps basically vertical (upside down). Sometime you can hold a weight as well. This will give you more power and strength there. So if…

  • Good question, I would say 80 if its 30 and windy. Give me 30 if there is no wind. When it is 30, I have to wear pants and a long sleeve shirt. I hate running in anything but shorts and a t-shirt. I found I have to run a bit slow when 80 because of the heat. I use my heart rate monitor to gauge. I ran my fastest time ever,…
  • The only way to tell for sure is measure body fat percentages So if you are 20.0% body fat at 200 you have 160 pounds of non fat. You have 40 pounds of fat Measure 6 - 8 weeks later and see where you are. Let's say you went to 206 at 20% body fat, you now have 1.2 more pounds of fat, but 4.8 more pounds of muscle You do 9…
  • To answer the original question, I would say beef jerky is healthier than Slim Jim beef sticks You can compare this to the food database or google it Slim Jim Total Calories per serving 160 Total Fat 14g Saturated fat 6g Protein 7g Sodium 490 mcg Jack Link Original beef jerky Total Calories per serving 70 Total Fat 0.8g…
  • 1). Eat less 2). Move More 3). Track everything you eat and every thing you drink with calories in MyFitnessPal App 4). Set your calorie deficit in the App wisely e.g. 2 lbs a week if you are huge 5). Learn from others on the success stories 6). Make adjustments as you go There is alot of small details that can help, but…
  • I did the 10 day Master Cleanse once when younger and less intelligent. I strongly recommend against it. My findings Positives I learned about how much time I spent worrying about food I learned how important eating is in our culture from a social perspective I learned how to overcome hunger pains Lost 15 pounds (but…
  • Awesome job!
  • Just build a routine where it becomes a habit. There are some days, I just don't feel like it, but I go any way. I go every work day at lunch (flexible schedule). It is just engrained in me this way. I never think about not going. Do you eat lunch everyday? Think of it the same way, its just something you do, quitting or…
  • This question has been ask it seems a million times on this site. The answer is no you don't have to do cardio. You have to have a caloric deficit to lose weight. Adding cardio has some benefits to heart health and burning more calories, but is not required to lose weight.
  • If you are doing compound fully body exercises two times a week, I like the plan the trainer gave you. You could do a 3 and 3 split, but 2 - 4 will burn more calories. It would be a bad idea to only do cardio. Like many have mentioned while cutting fat you want to maintain as much muscle as possible.
  • A hot bath or soak in a hot tab after an excruciating run or weight lifting session seems to help with soreness. However, no help with weight loss, in fact heat slows down the metabolism slightly I would think.
  • You can lose weight for sure eating out. I eat out 1 or 2 meals everyday because of work 1 Sandwich shop (Jason's Deli, Subway, Which which, Potbelly, Subway) 1 Taco place (e.x. Taco Cabana Chicken Tacos and boracho beans, taco bell fresco tacos) I think eating and making your own nutrition meals is better, but I have a…
  • If by strength standards you are a novice, you will want to use a beginner / novice bulking routine. I prefer Rippetoe's Starting Strength or HST. When you advance to an intermediate, I really like madcow. The beginner routines should concentrate on big compound lifts e.g. Squat, deadlift, bench, overhead press, barbell…
  • Amazing job and transformation. Great Job!
  • I have been a member of a gym now for 15 years. I see the swarms every January with the exception of last year. Not sure why, but last year the crowds never came. However, I work out at lunch. So maybe the newbies all went before or after work.
  • Sounds like your doing it correct. All my kids do some sport. Mom and Dad always have, so they always were interested in it. 7 years old is young, none of my kids could run that far or fast to keep up with me. I used to go on outside runs on the weekend e.g. 5 or 6 miles. Sometimes they would go with me on their bicycles.…
  • I do it all alone. About 7 years ago I trained with a friend for about 2 years. He had never done any exercise, ever. Coaching him and doing running and weight lifting together was quite a fantastic experience. Once he started making positive improvements, his enthusiasm was contagious. I ended up making the best gains…
  • jaygreen55 has a good post with good references. I used to supplement with everything. The only benefit I got was placebo. I do nothing now and eat healthy and feel 50 times better. I think most supplements offer more harm than good. Supplements are mostly created to make the manufacturer money. They are good at targeting…
  • I like Cholula and Louisiana Hot Sauce. For me Tabasco has too much vinegar. I prefer Pace Medium on omelets, eggs, and breakfast burritos.
  • Many women and men would consider your problem a blessing. The only thing you can do is keep getting less body fat or surgery it seems.
  • okay this is from my experience and not scientific or linked, just personal experience I don't think very many are naturally thin, but I know 2 circumstances in my own family that are true. My wife and youngest son are naturally thin. My wife has gained some weight. She is 5'3 and 125 at 49. Most of her life she has been…
  • I always rotate (every other run) different shoes. I found the two shoes below work best for me. I had really bad plantar fasciitis before. I have custom made orthodics I wear in my everyday shoes. My shoes now I utilize in the rotation are New Balance 940 Brooks Addiction or Brooks Beast If the past I did Nike, Asics, and…
  • Many body builders mess around with carb cycling and seem to have luck. I'm older now and believe in balance in about everything in life. So I do something similar to the Zone diet rations 40-30-30. (carbs, protein, fat)
  • I log everything right before, during, or right after I eat it. Sometimes at a restaurant, I'll log before I eat then decide if I can have another helping etc. To me, you are less likely to mess up if you plan in advance, but I have an idea what to eat before each meal. So if you logged everything before dinner, you might…
  • I have a newer pair. From what I've gathered and do, you should weight before dinner after non eating for 3 or 4 hours. Mornings are very inaccurate because of lack of water etc. So eat breakfast (if you do), normal lunch, then after about 3 or 4 hours of not eating weigh. Do it exactly the same conditions each weigh in if…
