  • I'm right there with you! I am supposed to start purees on Monday, (meet with my surgeon on the 3rd), and I'm pretty terrified too. I have already been struggling with very bad acid reflux and some TMI bathroom issues due to the protein, so I'm torn between wanting to get the heck off these protein shakes and scared of…
  • Congrats Connie! My surgery date (VSG) was just behind yours and on the same day as Angie - 11/16. This group has really helped me a lot in such a short time. Please feel free to friend me if you like.
  • Thanks everyone, I'm going to stop freaking out. And you're right, it was pretty awesome to step on the scale and see that number. I'm sure next week it will come to a screeching halt as my body adjusts to reality!
  • Thanks guys....I'm trying. I know it will get better, it *has* to get better, but man oh man the last few days have been miserable. I keep slowing my rate of 'sipping' but I'm still taking in too much, and having tons of heartburn and pain. It's hard to see how I'll ever meet my water and protein goals considering, but I…
  • So I'm back home today, discharged around 2 PM. Not as much nausea as I feared. The pain has been a lot worse than expected, pain pills not doing much. Gas pains are quite bad, but I'm taking Gas-X and trying to move around, I know it's temporary. Worst part though is the heartburn--it is excruciating! Even slow sips of…
  • thank you everyone! loveshoe, where did you get your thermometer from? I'm having a hard time finding a decent one.
  • thanks everyone. I am going to talk to my manager on Monday. I was hoping to wait until my insurance approved, but it's taking a very long time (still pending) and with a surgery date of 11/9 or 11/16 I don't think I should delay any longer. In my case I've already been working limited hours for the past few months due to…
  • Thanks, I do know about the FMLA, and I am eligible. Did you tell them before you knew for sure? I called my doctor today, and they've heard nothing back from insurance yet. As far as I know it *should* be approved, so theoretically I could go ahead and tell my employer, but it's always possible my insurance will deny it.
  • Thank you for the words of advice. My PCP is intimately aware of what's going on, I've probably seen her 5-6 times since this weird illness began. I've seen a neurologist (two different ones), a cardiologist, a rheumatologist, a psychologist, an ear nose throat (rule out inner ear infection) doc, and today an…
  • Thank you everyone-- your suggestions and well wishes are much appreciated! I'm grateful to see that this can be done without strenuous exercise. I walk about 4K steps a day, and that's about all I can do. There are days that I walk in the 6-7K zone because of an unusually busy day, but those days are brutal. I'm limping…
  • Hi, I'm just starting the process to get a VSG. I have an insurance-imposed 3 month wait chock full of specialist and dietician visits, tentatively looking at late October or early November. Would love to be added to an active group. I'm very nervous about the surgery and being able to maintain!
  • I am also considering weight loss surgery. Be sure to ask about the gastric sleeve, which many insurances now cover. The weight loss center in my area switched over to this completely a few years back--they no longer do lap band and occasionally do bypass. There are no mal-absorption issues with this type of surgery,…
  • weighing things frozen vs. non frozen makes a big difference, too. I never realized this until a few months ago. I have frozen french fries sometimes, usually potato wedges, and I was weighing my portions faithfully--after I took them out of the oven. Then one day for some reason I noticed the bag said "xx g or about 8…
  • Thank you for the suggestions on the plans and books, I'll take a look at them. Yes, of course I know what a daily menu should look like, and I've googled recipes for hours and hours and hours. I understand completely how a meal should be structured. I just don't know of any super easy recipes to achieve this that I have…
  • I'm in the U.S. I don't have a ton of money, but I'm willing to take some of the money I'm blowing on fast food and other junk and instead spend it on a professional (or really good program) who can help me. I have lost count how many times I've tried to do this myself....really, it's not working.
  • I've looked at allrecipes and other recipe sites, but I become easily overwhelmed. I'm not looking for a recipe site or for anything in which I have to build the meal plan myself. I'm looking for someone who can actively help me choose meals that will be healthy, not crazy expensive and easy to make. At the minimum, I…
  • "You're losing weight. CICO works. You say you're logging accurately, but without an open diary, that's hard to assess. Why is your goal to lose only 11 pounds when you profile says you're morbidly obese? EVERYONE is always convinced they're an outlier or a special snowflake who defies the laws of physics. They're not." My…
  • Yep, definitely time to find a new doctor, or since you can't, be annoyed at her. ;-) I once hand carried my medical records to a new place when I moved to a different state. I was shocked at what I read! Lots of, "patient claims..." and disbelief over everything I was stating about my health concerns at the time. You…
  • I'm 5'10 and my goal weight is around 180. Getting down to around 165, which I was in my 20s, would be awesome, but I don't see that as doable at my age (41) and the enormous amount of weight I need to lose already (100+ pounds). I have pictures of myself in high school when I weighed 145 and thought I was "fat." I am…
  • I can so relate to this! I also lost nothing the first week, and this was religiously documenting my meals (to the point of using a food scale) and sticking to my calorie goals. A month in and I've barely lost any weight. I'm flummoxed and discouraged, but I noticed I am still taking in a lot of sodium (processed foods…
  • I lost absolutely nothing, and I'm starting at a pretty high weight. I've been at it for a month now, and maybe lost 3 pounds total. It's very discouraging, but I'm trying to keep at it.
  • I concur with previous statements that the larger you are, the more weight you need to lose to drop a size. It varies per person, but when I lost a lot of weight once before I had to lose about 10% of my weight to drop a size. I was quite large, 340 pounds and a size 30/32, and I had to drop 30-40 pounds before I moved…
  • I have 100+ pounds to lose, and I could really use the support. I've been following my plan religiously for the past 2 weeks and haven't lost a single pound. :-( It's discouraging and makes me want to quit. Going to keep at it, though!
  • I didn't mean to completely disappear from this post-- I've been taking the past week to go through this entire list and write down things I think I can do, also doing some more research on some of the suggested sites, so I can start trying 1 or 2 new recipes a week. Believe me, I do know that I have to do some cooking…
  • I appreciate ALL of the suggestions, thank you! I did more research last night on MFP and came across some additional recipes. It is so very hard to break the habit of how I like to eat. I know it's common, but it's frustrating to me that I've twice lost a significant amount of weight, only to gain it all back, because I…
  • Thanks everyone, I appreciate the help & tips. I do not plan on buying a food scale, so I'll investigate some other ideas. For me, it isn't about being exact to the last gram, it's about not being wildly off. I agree with what everyone says, that most people eat a lot more than they think---so I don't want to be eating 2…
  • HappyStack, that's a great idea if I was only cooking for myself and portioning for myself, but as an example tonight we cooked a box of pasta for 3 adults and one child, (with leftovers). I'm the only person trying to lose weight, so no one else cares about portion control. :-) I'm trying to figure out how to create a…
  • csk0018, that's a wonderful article. Thank you for sharing! Her troubles are so much worse than mine, but we have a similar goal-- I have a 2 1/2 yr old son I can't possibly keep up with.
  • Good to know. I keep being told that I *must* exercise to lose weight. And, having been through the weight loss journey before, I bitterly remember that 240 pound plateau. 3 times in the past 10 years I've gotten to that point, and 3 times i've been unable to get past it. Now the hard part: actually starting. I originally…
