I don't think she's in the minority, the BMI scale has every body builder/rugby player etc as obese, I get a body fat analysis done every 6 weeks or so to monitor that everything is moving in the correct direction, yes it also give me my BMI but I'm more interested in comparing my body fat decreased and my lean body mass…

For me it would be if the person that's already within normal/healthy range was then dropping weight to an underweight range then that's not healthy. Weight is just a number on the scale, why do you want to continue to drop weight instead of increasing lean body weight and improving VO2 output and getting healthier (just…

This is a brilliant forum post that will pretty much cover off most questions a person new to running would want to ask http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/1217573-so-you-want-to-start-running

I expect my running trainer to last between 400-600miles before I have to consider getting a new pair (I only run in my trainers for this reason and have a different pair for walking and going to the gym). I know people that have 2 pairs of the same trainers and alternate them between runs so that they get longer before…

Edinburgh Marathon use a sweeper bus at the 6.5hr point, a bus basically makes a sweep of the route and anyone still on the route is 'encouraged' to get on the bus to be taken to the finish because the roads will be getting re-opened behind the bus. I believe that in the Edinburgh Marathon it's optional to get on it (but…

Technically you don't need to run fast if you were being chased by Zombies, you just need to be able to run faster than your friends!!! I couldn't actually tell you how I breathe when I'm running as never really paid attention to it, I find it frustrating when my breathing is fine but my legs are gubbed (or my legs are…

Running is Mental (at least 90% of it anyway) How long is your 10k taking you, if you can comfortably manage 12k then in theory all you're doing is tacking on an extra 10k. You've said yourself that you're not looking race it just complete it, with 6 weeks to go I don't think there's any reason why you can't managed it.…

Yep, happens to me as well, long sleeved top to wipe and then fling it in the washing (or snot bombs whilst running but they take practice or you snotter all down your top instead of just the sleeve), I take the dog with me so I blame his slobbers!!

I like MapMyRun for tracking my runs but I can head towards the obsessive point when checking my splits, MapMyRun will show you the distance, total time and average pace, you can then check the other screens to seen the total ascent and also the split times of each mile. I would also second getting your gait analysis done…

If you want to tire him out I would use mental stimulation before the run, you get the games for dogs where you hide treats and they have to figure out the puzzle to get the treat out, or throwing a ball for half an hour. It will take time, you'll probably have to start off when you're running only running a few strides…

Ridgeback, currently doing my marathon training with me, lucky that I live within 5min drive of 2 different forests so we're at one of them 2 nights a week and both mornings at the weekend. He's pretty much off leash the whole way unless we see another dog that's on leash (because we're up there that much we know most of…

Agree with routine and triggers, my trigger is putting my TV onto a sleep timer (so I know it turns off whilst I'm asleep) I then play one of 3 movies and I'm pretty much sleeping before the opening credits are finished. I work 2 jobs so I work most Saturday nights so on a Saturday I'm up early do my run and anything else…

I would have to say since starting MFP I stopped with cereal in the morning and started porridge and I've lost just over 10kg, I used to really dislike it (texture rather than taste) but now I love it and have it 7days a week (double amount on my long run days)!!

You'll never be able to convince her otherwise, she'll have to learn for herself (probably the hard way). I have a couple of friends like this, I'll give my opinion and then drop the subject, if they won't listen to the doctors and the trainers they're unlikely to listen to me (same way as I'm unlikely to listen to them…

Just found this regarding labelling of oats as allergy free Labelling of oats Oat products are often labelled as '100% oats', 'pure oats' or 'organic' oats. These terms do not tell you whether or not the product is free from contamination with gluten. We list uncontaminated oats in the Food and Drink Directory. It’s a…

There's no chance of me going fruitarian (although I understood it to be fruit that falls (or would fall from the plant) so in effect fruit that can be harvested without killing/harming the plant/tree. Would the fats/proteins not comes from nuts and seeds which are relatively high in these things?? I have memories of a…

I love my porridge in the morning, although bit leary of all these flavoured ones (I automaticaklly think of them as processed rather than rolled oats that I make myself), however if you're wheat free you might struggle to find oats to use, because of farming practices you'll be lucky to find oats that are guaranteed to be…

Beat me to it, just dug around to find that post as I think it's really well written and covers the majority of questions faced by most new runners (wish I'd had it to had a couple of years ago when I first started)!!

I find running outside more difficult in some ways, start with the c25k as it tends to start you off at run 1min walk 1.5min, it's not about speed at the beginning (it's never really about speed get the miles in the legs and the speed will come itself to a degree) it's just about keeping moving for the interval. If you…

If you're happy eating what they put in it then yes it probably works, however I think a better question is 'is it sustainable', I don't think it's sustainable and when you stop doing it you won't have sufficiently changed your habits to maintain the weight loss. It's a good thing about weight watchers (or similar) it's…

I done a fair bit of running over the weekend and decided to have a Greggs Chicken Bake on the Monday (high fat, processed food that I wouldn't normally have because of the calorie value in it) and felt really unwell on the Tuesday which I do think is because of the processed food and my stomach no longer be able to…

I drink whole milk after a run or weights session, it hydrates, has protein, fat and carbs, I know chocolate milk is quite a good post workout food but I don't like chocolate milk so I stick to plain whiole milk, or a handful of pine nuts!!

I run outside and I don't carry water with me for several reasons, I really dislike carrying things in my hands when I'm running, my short runs I don't really need the water, my longer runs I'm lucky that I have access to a forest and I run 6 or 7 mile loops round the forest and will carry water in the car and stop to get…

I have a pair of berghaus hiking boots that I use when walking the dog up some of the steeper trails, I also have a pair of Salomon Trail Running shoes for when we're running the trails (having tried runningin the boots I wouldn't recommend it). It's really personal choice, go to a proper store (Cotswold, Tiso are good UK…

Phone in an armband so I can track my run, car key in my running tights pocket (I run in the forest so I have also been known to hide it under a rock, but don't try this is you're more than an hours walk away from home or likely to forget), bumbag (British equivalent of a fanny pack) for the dog treats as he runs with me.…

Take a banana with you for after you aerobic workout. I used to be like that with breakfast, felt nauseous at the thought but had to change my habits when I started doing runs in the mornings (no one organises runs in the evenings, the one this weekend started at 8:30am)!! I have porridge in the morning (double on the…

I actually have a spreadsheet set up where I have all my runs from last year, their distance and the time taken, I am trying to do the same runs this year so I can compare times (not overly impressed at one of the runs changing their distance from 10k to 10miles)!!

Welcome to friend me, I'm relatively good at logging and my mapmyrun account is linked to the myfitnesspal so most of my running/walking gets logged. My calories are quite high at the moment because I'm training for a marathon.

Celery's meant to be negative, but let's face it, to eat celery you need to dip it in something that has calories!!!

Well done, if you hadn't stopped and sorted out the stitch you could have been walking for longer at 9miles. It's a goal to smash next time:)
