  • Try running outside, I feel it's too easy to try and go to fast on a treadmill when the belt is moving, outside on the trails/tarmac you get a much more natural pace.
  • It will help in the long run, in that you will be toning the underlying muscle, but will it change the appearance and lose fat off that one part of your body, then no. You can't spot lose fat by doing exercise, weight loss is 80% diet and 20% exercise (80/20 rule applies to everything in life apparently) Any extra exercise…
  • the James Cracknell documentaries are motivational, if he can run through death valley with a broken toe (from doing the marathon des sables 6 weeks prior), you can stay on the treadmill!!! There's 3 documentaries, one is the marathon des sables, one is race across america and think the first one was the yukon ultra.
  • Yes and No, taking that first step is the hardest and for the first 20min of a run I argue with myself about why I'm doing it, I hate it, I can't do it etc etc (fine after about 20min), that being said I do get really short tempered if I can't/don't get out for a run at least 4 times a week, so clearly some part of me…
  • Think 6hrs after WTM finishes they may still be in fetal position and in no shape to support us, I know my trainer wants to make the effort to come and see us at the finish line, but after 24hrs of running and obstacles I really feel they would be better just resting instead (but then again neither of them are normal so…
  • Don't have any aggresive buzzards in my part of Scotland, and reading the other posts about people worrying about bears, coyotes, snakes etc was thinking how good we have it, living in a country where you don't really have to worry about large predators, although the midgies can be down right vicious!!!
  • I've only done 1 marathon (so far), it was a hot day (for Scotland), there was water stops every 3 miles, with gels being handed out from mile 13 according to the map (it changed to mile 9 for the gels), Edinburgh marathon is brilliant in that respect, the support from local residents of the towns you run through is…
  • I've actually signed up for the Vegas half in November, the boys are going over to Vegas to do Worlds Toughest Mudder so I was going over to support them anyway and realised that the rock and roll half marathon was on at 4:30pm on the Sunday and they finish WTM at 10am on the Sunday (assuming they haven't killed themselves…
  • Would the gummier soles not then start causing issues with any of the sideways work?? Have you tried doing it in your bare feet (don't know what surface you do it on), could you be doing it on carpet and the friction from the carpet be causing more of a jarring type action on any sideways movements (haven't done 30 DS, but…
  • Your goals are your own, do you want general cardio fitness, build muscle, more flexibility, weight loss etc. What might be an idea is to speak to a personal trainer and get them to put together a training plan for you and maybe see to PT once a month or so to get assessed where you are and change what you're doing.
  • What your friend may be thinking of and trying to substitue is an ice bath (although there's a lot of discussion to the benefits of them), after a long run (15 miles or more for me), I do take an ice bath within 45min of finishing, cold water about half way up the bath, get in (fully dressed from my run) and then add about…
  • I'm the same, I would just do the 2 legs and get it over with, maybe have a try at running 1 leg in the morning, sitting about at home/work and then running the other leg in the evening, gives you an idea if it's something that would work for you, before you decide??
  • My friend says this is why he does't trust runners, they're always the one's finding bodies, it can't be a coincidence!!!
  • Glad I live in the UK, we don't have any big predators to think about (well there are wild boar in the south of England, but I'm in Scotland), I always let someone know where I'm going, have my phone with me (use it to track my runs more than anything) and take the dogs with me (over 100kg between them and their big dogs…
  • This has details of the UK marathons for 2014 - 2015 http://www.marathonrunnersdiary.com/races/uk-marathon-list.php
  • As above, you can still overeat the calories with healthy eating, people get caught out all the time nuts/seeds are good for you, but they are really high in fat so the portions have to be controlled, fruit is good for you but is high in sugar so the calories can add up quite easily, especially with fresh orange juice, I…
  • Our guy's always say that the running is the most important, there are always people that will help get you over the obstacles, but they can't help you get there!! After one of our guys ended up in hospital last year with an infection, I would say long tights (although he didn't learn his lesson and ran it in shorts again…
  • Speak to the health professional that's helping you with the ED, it's the professional help that you need, not the help of non-professionals on a public forum. What does the doctor/health professional say??
  • What about restaurants that change their menu's every other week or every month?? Chef's do not weigh out every single ingredient (unless it's pre-made food that's probably bought in), the restaurant I work is a steak house, the steaks vary in size (we have our own ionised fridge, meat is hung and our own butcher), it's an…
  • What was meant by intervals being better for weight loss, is that there's a higher calories burn and increased heart rate and after burn from interval training, but yes, weight loss is 80% achieved in the kitchen (you can't complete with what you eat)!!
  • There will be a topic on it, but it will say exactly the same as this thread, go to a running store and get your gait analysed, they should recommend several different shoes for you to try, you make the decision then on personal preference:)
  • Both, the interval training will improve you short run speed (5k/10k distances), tempo runs help improve the longer distance runs (half and above), and the long runs get the miles in the legs and gets you used to moving for longer periods of time!! As someone above said, it depends on what you want to do, are you aiming…
  • Hoping that when you say pup, you're still referring to a grown up dog and not an actually puppy?? I don't like them running on the pavements, especially in the summer when the tarmac/concrete gets hot it can burn pads really quite badly. Bouze comes running with me when I'm heading up to the forest trails and I can be…
  • People are advising to get your diet sorted, because you need the calories to build the muscle, you asked about building muscle and cutting fat, but you need the calories to do this. It's valid advice, it's up to you if you want to take the advice or not, but you won't build muscle on 1200 calories, so you need to pick…
  • Don't worry they save the electrocution for the end!! Running trails is different to running the roads but if you've got the mileage then that's great, my trainer (who is mental enough to have entered Worlds Toughest Mudder) always says that to people, the distance is the most important thing, there are always people that…
  • I've started yoga to help with my running so I don't have time to do it on back to back days, however if I had the time, then yes I would, was quite sore after the first couple of classes with muscles stretching that don't normally stretch that far or for that long, but now I feel I could do it back to back if I had the…

  • You're never on your own at Tough Mudder!!! It's the sort of event where everyone helps each other, there'll always be someone to help you at obstacles, you'll meet like minded people and probably make new friends. Scottish one has been and done, but I would do the event on my own, knowing the sort of people that run it,…
  • I used to run slower than I could walk, however over time my speed at running built up and I'm now faster (most of the time), calorie wise, probably not a huge difference between a really brisk walk and a jog, so it depends on you, do you want to run for a reason or are you happy to continue with your brisk walk?? If you…
  • Depending on the length of run I'm doing in the mornings depends on what I eat, under 4 miles, I'll just have a banana, greek yogurt or some nuts, over 4 miles, I'll look to have some porridge, over 10 miles I'll also take gels/banana's with me to start taking after 10 miles to keep my energy levels up, I prefer banana's…
  • Go to a store/podiatrist to get properly fitted for shoes that suit your gait, people on here can only tell you what they wear, but they can't see your gait to know what would be best for you.
