  • I just wanted to update all of you! I went to a running store, and got some good help. As it turns out, I had selected shoes with extra support in them. I guess having the arch support under my arch felt good and I didn't know any better. Anyway, I don't need any support at all for my feet! Since there was extras support…
  • First of all I want to say THANK YOU for the complete lack of snark. I know you probably get a lot of newbies scared about starting, but you check out the thread anyway and answered my questions and were totally nice and friendly about it. Thank you so much :) I feel better about the part where it's okay if your form isn't…
  • I already had decided to start lifting, but now I've decided to also take before pics. :) Starting 5x5 tomorrow, with hubby's help for form and intimidating factors. One question though, and this probably sounds really stupid: Do any of you lovely lifters ever feel self conscious working out with all the men around... not…
  • I'm 5'7 and I run/jog at 4.0... I know, I know, I'm super lame. But I'm doing C25K and it says to start of running as slow as you can. Once I can run for 30 minutes at a time I'll work on increasing my speed! I'd rather be able to run for awhile, than run fast but have to quit after thirty seconds.
  • Since the media is well known for being accurate, un-biased, and immune to financial or governmental bribery... yeah, I bet that report is 100% reliable. *cough* There's a whole other rant about how the economy survives off of sick unhealthy people but I'm so not getting in to that today.
  • Thanks so much for all the replies! Since it's at a pretty moderate level of discomfort right now, I'll just go to the running store and see what they think. If it gets any worse, I'll go back to my doctor and request a referral! I appreciate everyone taking the time to reply :)
  • Oh, one more! Shoulders: I have clunky shoulders. Sometimes when I rotate them around they make some clunking noises, or the range of motion isn't as smooth as it seems like it should be. I'm only 25 and they've been like this forever as far as I know. When I do lateral side raises sometimes I'll get a sharp twinge near…
  • I read every post up to page ten but don't have time to finish the rest right now. So sorry if you've already answered my questions earlier! Crunches: I don't like these because it makes my neck hurt. Even when I do it like you said, keeping my chin off my chest and not pulling on my neck. The only way I can keep my neck…
  • Thanks for the answers! Since I'm committed to running I'll stick to fewer days per week for myself.
  • I have a lovely roll of fat right under my bra line, it creases inward, then the belly pooch begins. Just like yours except higher up. I just take it to be how my body looks when I'm carrying fat, and I'm going to get rid of it by reducing body fat.
  • I would wait on the doctor visit and see what happens over the next several weeks. If the hair loss slows back down to a normal level, I would just shrug it off as a side effect of weight loss. Stress and depression can cause it too, btw. I had a phase where a bunch of my hair fell out, it was gross because when my bf ran…
  • Just because the food item is one of the food items in the paleo way of eating, doesn't mean eating three pounds of it is paleo. Paleo is based off of the concept of "eating what the cavemen ate", right? Nuts, like fruits, were not consumed in massive quantities. They were found in small natural quantities occasionally -…
  • OH. Okay. Whew, here I thought I offended you ;) They make those virtual keyboards now; you could shine it on the bottom of your desk and type that way??
  • Aww really? Sorry. I wasn't trying to be inappropriate. It's just supposed to be a yoga pose.
  • This conversation is why I ALWAYS sit like this: Let gravity put the rolls in a different place. ;)
  • It's not good days vs bad days. It's good choices vs bad choices, that affect you weight and fitness. If you ate 500 calories too many, you're going to end up needing to get rid of 500 calories (exercise, eating at a deficit). If you decide the day is a bad day so you might as well gorge and you eat 3,500 calories too…
  • You could be extremely low fat and still get rolls of tissue, crinkling, and flab when you sit. In order for you to be able stand straight and bend backwards, there has to be enough tissue to allow for that. When you bend the other way, by sitting, that tissue bunches up. Poochy sitting tummy = everyone.
  • Frequently when trying to lose weight, infrequently when maintaining. Right now I'm losing, so daily or a couple times a week. Once I'm happy with my fitness and weight level, I won't weigh that often.
  • I feel a turning point happening in my personal life, and although it hasn't stood the test of time yet I feel I'm on the right track. I had to admit to myself that I had been downright lazy with my food choices. Just lazy! I also confronted the fact that what I'd been doing was not giving me the results I wanted. I was…
  • Three pounds of almonds in a sitting is NOT paleo. ;) Just so you know. I like paleo for a lot of reasons. One reason is it focuses on whole, real, clean foods. None of this non-fat dairy, sugar-free chemically monkey business. Gross. Unfortunately when diets focus on cutting out fat (which, by the way, is super good for…
  • Do you guys do it every day for 30 days? I heard Jillian actually recommends doing it every other day/3x per week, which is what I do. However the program doesn't make it very clear one way or the other IMO. I never do an exercise on consecutive days, to give my muscles a chance to recover. I'm doing C25K (running) 3x/wk…
  • I got a One for Christmas and I love it. :) I especially enjoy the sleep tracking feature. For those of you who also monitor your sleep with a fitbit, do you find that you're restless often? I end up with 20-30 minutes of restlessness, and it's usually 12-20 different times a night. I have some sleep issues so I'm curious…
  • My heel doesn't hurt, it's the middle of the foot, where the long straight bones are. More towards the ball of the foot but towards the outside edge and more central, not in any of the joints. I don't think it's PF based on that? I do have relatively high arches. I wear good running shoes but I picked them out myself so…
  • Encouragement about the water: I brought water for the first couple weeks. It was so hard to run that I was gasping for air a lot which made my mouth feel so dry and I would feel soooo thirsty! I just started week four though and it's not nearly as bad. I don't get a dry mouth and although I still breath heavily on some of…
  • I agree that it's possible your self perception is a little off. Everyone has a different build though, so of course what's normal and healthy for your is different than for me. I'm 5'7 also and currently 178, hoping to end up in the 130-140 range unless I have a lot of muscle in which case I'm fine with a higher number.…
  • Just a thought, but depression really affected my enjoyment levels with exercise. When I was pretty depressed all the time, I HATED exercise. I never did get that endorphin rush you're supposed to get, that runner's high, that heightened sense of wellbeing, that extra energy... none of it. It just sucked all the time and…
  • They're working on their grip so they can do monkeybars.
  • Very interesting, thanks so much for sharing! I've never believed that breakfast was so important and I often don't eat until 10am or so. With IF, does it matter when your 8 hr window is? If I eat at 10am for the first time, and stop eating by 6pm, is that just as good as 12pm-8pm? As long as I work out before eating, does…
  • Hubby and I are looking forward to doing the Spartan Sprint at Fort Carson, CO in May. :) I have 15 weeks, 6 days to train!! My goals: - Complete the Couch to 5k (just finished W4D1 today, and finally had a few moments of, "I think I could actually be a runner!") - Be able to run 4 miles without walking, since the course…
  • Thanks for sharing your story. Our weight is about so much more than just the food, isn't it? There are so many reasons behind why we do what we do! I'm currently near your high weight, which is also my personal all time high, and your current weight is my goal! Very inspirational pictures and story. I love that it took…
