  • I literally just don't buy a ton of things I don't need to eat, especially not very many snacks. I (very loosely) plan my meals for the week, buy what I need for them specifically, and then make those foods and eat them. It's pretty rare that I'd have a meal without at least one veggie, because...well, what else would I…
  • I love Smitten Kitchen. Recipes are not at all "low calorie" but are consistently fantastic and easy to memorize/customize. They've become my staples. Definitely the best results I've had with a food blog--she really captures the joy of food and cooking. http://smittenkitchen.com/ I also use the Cooking Light website,…
  • Feeding tube/IV diet. You just load up the required amount of calories for the day and stop eating with your mouth entirely. Seriously, it wouldn't surprise me. :(
  • Ah, just realized this is the same person. WHAT is this big event? Now I really, really want to know. Unless someone is either a wrestler or model whose career is literally dependent on a weigh-in, I can't imagine what could be worth this much distress. Beauty pageant?! LOL. I am so curious. :)
  • You are an 18-year old with a healthy BMI who says she has never been comfortable with her body, considers herself "a whale," and wants to be "some sort of model" (which isn't necessarily an attainable goal for the vast majority of us no matter what we eat or how fit we get). I think working on your body image issues, at…
  • This sounds great--I am in! Just learned that I'm moving this month (ugh), so maybe I'll count lugging furniture out of my 4th-floor walk-up towards the 24 hour goal. :) December 1--0 minutes December 2--40 minutes running Remaining: 23 hours, 20 minutes
  • Of course I've felt bloated before a big event. To deal with it I have 1) picked a different dress that I was more comfortable in (tip: things that are loose-fitting but short are both hot AND allow you to eat) or 2) just dealt with it and had fun. Unless you are a celebrity whose red carpet photos are going to be…

  • Or a Korean mega spa! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jjimjilbang They're becoming a thing in the U.S. now. The one in my area bans absolutely all clothing in the (gender segregated) hot tub/pool areas.
  • Hooray, we follow the exact same recipe! :) Except occasionally with some added bacon... I always laugh when my coworkers say, "That looks great, can you send me the recipe?" And I am like...not really? I use a formal recipe maybe once a month.
  • Something else to keep in mind when considering purchasing these products--virtually all multi-level marketing schemes (which all the companies you listed are) are pretty predatory and use exploitative and misleading tactics to lure people in based on either on pseudoscience or skewed income promises. The vast majority of…
  • My advice is to eat a balanced diet that makes you feel good, do some weight training to get stronger, appreciate your healthy body for all the wonderful things it can do, and for God's sake, stop holding yourself up to "exacting standards." That sounds miserable and not particularly emotionally/mentally healthy.
  • Biggest Loser contestants also severely dehydrate themselves before weigh-ins. :) So a lot of that is DEFINITELY "water weight."
  • Yeah, my favorite thing is when people equate "all natural" with "safe" and "healthy." You know what is natural? All of these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_poisonous_plants
  • What's the weather like today where you are? Really f*ing cold. Favorite item of clothing that fits you currently? I have this killer blazer that I love so much I now own it in four colors. I feel unstoppable in it. Like I am Olivia Pope. Favorite color(s)? Green, yellow Your current favorite snack? I am really into apples…
  • Who cares whether it "works" or not--eating 30 bananas a day sounds utterly torturous. I would vomit (maybe that's how it works? JK). Not to mention, unless you live in a tropical climate where bananas are locally available, horribly environmentally unsustainable.
  • There is nothing I eat every single day, and I eat pretty similar things whether I'm cutting calories or not. But things I almost aways have on hand are: Eggs "Easy to cook" vegetables (that just require chopping and steaming or roasting) like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, etc. Tuna and sardines Apples Peanut butter…
  • I've taken tons of drugs--including anti-anxiety meds--that can cause weight gain. However, none have ever caused any weight gain in me. Everyone is different--there is no point in worrying about something that hasn't happened yet, and may not happen at all. Not everyone experiences the same side effects. Even if you do…
  • Eh, I think once one is at a healthy weight, there is a happy medium to achieve between 1) continuing to work on strength training and losing a little more to achieve the look you want, and 2) making peace with your body and genetics rather than obsessing about conforming to a specific and arbitrary beauty standard. I…
  • Cool, that totally answers my question. I would like to be stronger. So probably in the near future I may adjust my goals to add a bit more muscle. I am really glad I drank all that coffee and started this thread, hehe.
  • Thank you everyone for your quick and very useful responses! Glad to know I am not the only one with these questions. So, is gaining muscle mass mostly a goal for aesthetic purposes? I ask because I'm pretty happy overall with my appearance (just temporarily decreasing calories just a bit to make up for the consequences of…
  • I love bananas, but I don't eat them daily. I get most of my produce from a local CSA share, and bananas...don't typically grow in the Mid-Atlantic. :) I buy some maybe once or twice a month--more in the winter, once I start getting sick of apples.
  • At 1200-1300, I don’t feel “hungry” per se, in that don’t I crave food or feel physical hunger pangs (I eat mostly nutritious foods that keep me feeling pretty full). However, I do feel weak, light-headed, headache-y, and sometimes dizzy. I can't work out to my full potential. Worst of all, I feel like I develop a sort of…
  • I'm in complete agreement with this. Health isn't just about what you eat and how much you exercise--it is also about mental and emotional health. Food has strong social, cultural, and emotional elements, and participating in those parts of eating are just as important for one's mental well-being as nutrition, in my…
  • Hello. I’m Cara from Washington, DC. Once upon a time I was a (kind of lazy) high school cross country runner; I’ve picked up distance running again in recent years and it is my wonderful happy zen place! I’ve run four half-marathons in the last two years with times ranging from 2:03 (decent training effort) to 2:17 (knee…
