  • Woah!! That is amazing - how fantastic did it feel to shatter your 5k time like that?!? Fantastic!!!
  • That's a great article - thanks for sharing! I'm actually pretty pleased with CNN for getting Meg Urry (a real, respected astrophysicist) to write that up. Not much of the "ZOMG doomsday!!!" that you almost always get with talk of asteroids. (Not to say that asteroids can't cause ZOMG doomsday!!! scenarios, just that most…
  • Definitely not doing anything wrong!!! When I was doing c25k I would run at 5.6-6.0 mph depending on how long I had to run (5.6 for the longer runs at first, though I could handle 6.0 for the shorter runs sometimes). By the time I was done I guess my system was happily enough conditioned to the act of running that I could…
  • I did my first 6 weeks or so inside on the treadmill, then gradually switched to outside. One tip that I read was that you could set the incline on the treadmill to 1 or 1.5% incline, which helps simulate the extra resistance you get when you switch to outside. I did this from day one, and when I took my runs outside I…
  • Oh neat - I'd never heard of a duathlon but that sounds like something I'd really like to try! A triathlon is a bit much for me (my swimming isn't up to snuff, though I could work on that...), but this sounds fun and manageable!
  • Hooray! :D That is an AWESOME name for a race, by the way, hahaha. Please let us know how it goes!
  • Hi all. I'm in the 2nd year of my PhD in Astronomy & Astrophysics!
  • DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT!!!! Even if you can't run the whole way. Do it!!! I am almost certain that you won't regret it. I just did my first 5k a couple of weeks ago and it was amazing. There is so much energy in the crowd of runners and the crowd of people cheering you on. It's just a fantastic feeling. And there are…
  • Awesome, can't wait to hear your updates! Maybe I'll follow a bit in your footsteps. :) I did my first 5k a couple weeks ago and was floored by my time (26:09). I would love to get that under 25 minutes, and my next distance goal is to get up to a 10k. I think my ultimate distance goal would be a 1/2 marathon - I'm not…
  • You could have a couple of shots of alcohol. That would only be ~120 calories and it should knock you right out. Then you don't have to feel like your stomach is going to gnaw its way out of your abdomen whilst trying to get some zzz's. :flowerforyou:
  • I used Robert Ullrey's podcasts at first, but wasn't a huge fan of the music selection. I wanted to be able to listen to my own music and just have something tell me when to run and when to walk. I tried downloading some free timers for my iPod touch, but nothing did the trick. So finally I caved and purchased the Get…
  • Agreed with the others - you will be awesome, no matter what, because you're going to do it! :D One thing I found helpful, personally, was looking at some results from previous years of the race that I was going to do. I knew how long it took me to run 5k in a relaxed setting, and checked that time against the results…
  • I'm not going to lie. I used to hate running and now I adore it. But I can fully understand hating it. :) Here's the thing, though... I sometimes feel guilty because my running can edge into my weight lifting time! Cardio might be great for "weight loss," but lifting heavy weights is even better for "fat loss" (-- it…
  • Is the soy sauce primarily in the marinade? The meat only absorbs a fraction of the marinade, typically, and you're usually not supposed to use the leftover marinade after it's been soaking in raw meat... so while the 25 tbsp of soy sauce may have been necessary to ensure all the meat got enough sauce to soak in, it…
  • Honestly... Stage 1 is so long I would probably just pick up where you left off. Maybe repeat the last week of workouts that you did (before your life got crazy for a while). But in the end it's up to you! :)
  • As mentioned, quinoa has high protein for a grain. Hulled barley (NOT pearl barley) has close to the same protein content as quinoa, but has a very different texture (much firmer, like chewier rice). I love them both!
  • Welcome! Do you think you'll repeat (some or all of) Stage 1, or jump into Stage 2? I've also been running about the same amount. I was training for a 5k, which was amazing, and I think I got bit by the running bug... I'd like to work up to a 10k next, and maybe a half marathon as a more long-term goal. Not sure if I'll…
  • This is fun! I didn't do Halloween last year, so here's a comparison between 2009 and now. My partner and I wanted to do different costumes this year, but things got in the way! Still, I think the costumes (his in particular) are pretty sweet, so it wasn't a hardship to use 'em twice. :) 2009 (probably around 165-170 lbs):…
  • Ahhh, so very true! :) I used to be a lot more pear-shaped than I am now. I could do a medium sized top but need large sized pants - or a size 10 dress but a size 12 pants! I think I've ended up losing lots of weight from my hips and bum! Waiting for the rest of me to catch up, hehe. Body shape affects things a great deal!!
  • ^^^ This! I'm now wearing pants/skirts in sizes ranging from 4-8 (some 10s with a belt). There is NO WAY you'd fit me into a size 4 dress. No way. Boobs + ribcage = never being a size 4 dress. My dress size is between 6 and 10 depending on the brand.
  • I almost always just "wing it" with chili, but here's the basic ingredient list that I usually go with: canned crushed tomatoes onion celery green pepper frozen corn kidney beans black beans any other sort of beans ;) cooked quinoa and/or cooked hulled barley (not pearl barley) and/or cooked kasha (buckwheat) and/or cooked…
  • The bit about breathing through your mouth instead of your nose was new to me, actually! I had read (somewhere!) that it was good to breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth while running. Well, I had been trying to do that, but once it got chilly out my nose started to drip like a faucet whenever I ran! That…
  • In many countries, the title of "nutritionist" is unregulated and not protected by law, meaning lots of Joe Schmoes who took half a course in nutrition can call themselves nutritionists. The title of dietician, however, is usually regulated - meaning that person has to be accredited. Maybe ditch the nutritionist and see a…
  • This may help some of you 'imagine' what your men would look like at 6' and 150lbs. (I blacked out the face for privacy reasons and because he's not on this website). Lean? Absolutely. Emaciated? No.
  • My boyfriend is about 6' and 150 lbs as well. He's been athletic his whole life - cross country running, skateboarding, breakdancing, and now he's hardcore into cycling. I'd be hard pressed to find some flub on him. Is he rippling with muscles? Not really. Is he strong as hell? Absolutely. Whether or not he wants to gain…
  • Oh, and, regarding being 'tough enough' - I used to go to the park with my friends and we would take turns practicing tackling/being tackled. Learning how to fall was key for me, haha. But if you're fast enough, maybe you could play wing and outrun the other team and never (okay... rarely...) get tackled! ;)
  • I played in high school, and I miss it!! It was loads of fun. Actually, my first practice was a disaster. I got between the 8-man and the scrum half, and my coach absolutely FLIPPED out (I'm not sure if he realized it was my first practice or not, but he swore a right curse at me!). I almost gave up right there, but…
  • http://www.c25k.com/ http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml I finished C25K a little while back, and I loved it. I was never ever a runner before... I hated running for the sake of running. But I thought being able to run 5k was a good fitness goal so I thought I would just give it a try. About halfway through…
  • Rollin' rollin' rollin'! Woo! I'm on a bit of a break... my PhD qualifying exam is in a little over a week and I'm in hardcore overdrive mode. Taking some breaks for occasional jogs, but only because I can fit them in at odd hours easier than I can fit in packing up all my junk and going to the gym. Hopefully I won't set…
