  • Congratulations on the awesome news! Mom's have a funny way of being right, in some sense, ALL THE TIME! Gotta love them.
  • Anything that's a nut is ok, but legumes (peanuts) are not. As far as how much you can have, they are nuts and are quite calorie dense. It's best to treat nuts as a condiment and not a snack food, although snacking on a handful of them from time to time isn't necessarily bad.
  • Dairy is something that some people can do and some people can't. Generally dairy is not part of a paleo lifestyle, but if you follow the primal lifestyle, it sometimes allows full fat dairy. When you are first starting, a good idea is to go 30 days without dairy, as with grains and legumes. After your 30 days, try…
  • Journalling is a great tool that I use all the time. Not only can it help you vent some frustrations and avoid snack binges, but it gives you something to look back on in the future. In re-reading my older entries, I find I learn a LOT about myself, how my brain works, what things trigger certain moods. Also helps you…
  • When you first start a new routine, it's pretty normal not to lose any weight on it for up to two weeks or so as your body adjusts to it. This may be why you didn't notice any weight loss during your 17 days of the 2nd JM DVD. I know I was losing consistently for a few months but when I started 30DS, it came to a grinding…
  • I buy organic vegetables when I can, but it's not always in the budget. I use the dirty dozen and the clean 15 to help me choose what's more important to buy organically: http://www.pbs.org/wnet/need-to-know/health/the-dirty-dozen-and-clean-15-of-produce/616/ If I can get produce that's local, but not necessarily organic,…
  • I agree with this^^. Lifting heavy does good things for a woman's body, and it will not make you bulky. Eating as clean as possible, with a good amount of healthy fats (olive oil, coconut oil, avocado) can also help improve your body composition.
  • Not sure if this helps or not, but here's someone describing three different methods of intermittent fasting and her experiences with each one. http://www.niashanks.com/blog/three-methods-of-intermittent-fasting
  • I agree with monkeydharma, more fats! Feel free to take a look through my diary for ideas. I tend to eat between 1500 and 2000 (don't look at this week, I've been quite sick with no appetite and barely logging my foods, but start around Sunday and work your way back and you should see some examples). Hope that helps.
  • I don't have a link to it, but I've read this in one of the Paleo/Primal books. I think it was in The Paleo Solution by Robb Wolf. I've read a few of them so I can't say for sure!
  • AmyEm3 & hairhacker, if you open up your food diaries we may be able to offer you better advice on how to break through your plateaus.
  • In my experience, limiting sugars has more of an impact on reducing Body fat %. Don't worry so much about your fat intake, watch your sugar & carbs intake instead.
  • Check out this link from MDA. For weight loss, between 50g-100g of carbs is ideal. http://www.marksdailyapple.com/the-primal-carbohydrate-continuum/
  • Lifting heavy is a great way to accomplish all-over body "tone", but the 30 DS is not about lifting heavy. It's about lifting light for many reps. When people talk about lifting heavy, they are talking about strength training with heavy weights and exercises like deadlifts, squats, overhead presses, etc. These exercises…
  • If you open your diary, we can give you better suggestions on how to gain weight! My bf is currently trying to gain muscle weight. He makes sure to eat as much protein as he can (about 1g for every lb of bodyweight) and tries to focus on higher calorie foods which are nutritionally dense (think nuts, avocado, sweet…

  • I'm not sure what your goals are set at, but for my last 10-15 lbs I adjusted my weight loss goal to 0.5lb/week, based on the advice of other MFP folk. Once you only have a little left to go, your body won't want to give up a lb or more a week. Also I found when I was this close to goal, I had to really monitor my sodium…
  • I agree with this. You will likely to continue to have "inconclusive" results, as you haven't truly cut out gluten. It only takes one beer to damage your gut lining and it takes approx. 2 weeks for that to heal. The whole idea is to heal your gut. If you want to drink, try red wine or a clear hard liquor.
  • monkeydharma I think that's the best food pyramid graphic I've seen, and I've seen a bunch. Thanks for the link!
  • SAD = Standard American Diet
  • Agreed! :D

  • Haha yea I've heard a few of the "Dr. Oz says.." comments. Another favorite is "But the Food Pyramid...."
  • Yea I know! I read that study and have been trying to find the link to it since this morning when I first posted this. It's saved on my home computer I think so once I'm done work, I'll see if I can't link it.
  • Hahaha yep.

  • No problem!. I find it extremely difficult to get more than 20-30 minutes of kitchen time in after work so I try to get lots done on the weekend to minimize my cook time during the week. I also like to steam-saute 2-3 veggies on the weekend so I can just quickly heat them up during the week. It's an idea I picked up from…
  • I like to do a bunch of chicken up on the weekends too. I usually have a roast that I can throw in the slowcooker with just some broth and whatever veggies I have laying around. I roast a spaghetti squash every weekend and use that during the week to make various things. I'll saute 2 lbs of ground beef with onion and…
  • Exactly. And the people who are not even willing to try it. When you say "Oh I can't give up ____", what you're really saying is "Oh I WON'T give up _____". How do you know you can't give something up if you don't even try?
  • Yea that one always cracks me up. Yep, cavemen only lived to 30 and it was their diets that killed them, not the environmental challenges they faced.
  • Halifax, NS! I've met a few other Canadians over the last year since I signed up, but none of them ever really stuck with MFP. Glad to see so many of us here now!
  • Yep, I totally have those regrets. The best I can do for "before" pics are find pictures of myself to snag off Facebook. Strange considering when I joined here last February, seeing other people's success stories was a HUGE motivator for me! I did end up taking some pictures about half way through the journey, but it's…
  • I didn't read the other posts, just yours so I apologize if this has been said already. At 137 lbs and your height, you don't really have a WHOLE lot of weight to loose. A goal of losing 1.5 lbs/week is too high for someone who's not looking to shed 30-40 + lbs. I would try re-adjusting your goals to 0.5 lb/week. I know, I…
