Maybe I didn't see it above, but why can't you do both during your 1 hour at the gym? When you get to the gym, spend 30 minutes doing strength training using the machines and/or free weights, then spend 30 minutes cardio. I do this 4 days a week right now. Yes its worth it! As people above have stated, when you are losing weight, its not just fat. If you are not maintaining your muscles (through weight/strength training, core like pushups, crunches, etc), then as you lose the weight, you could also lose strength.

As of right now the only thing I have spent any money on was my gym membership. Which, I am happy to say is not a "waste" because I go 5 days a week! I have thought about protein powders and such, but have decided against them for now.
