  • Nice read. It would be interesting to pose some of your analysis to the programmers at Strava to see what they would say and/or perhaps explain how the algorithm is designed. FWIW I think Strava does a decent job on their calories burned (based on my own comparisons of using other independent calculators and formulas). I…
  • I noticed MFP takes the calories from Strava also. This is good because I think the math that MFP uses for calories burned is generic at best. If you use a few online calculators based on age, weight, etc. you can come up with a general calories burned per hour (I have calculated values for running & cycling and compared…
  • Put them in a pillow case. I sometimes put them in the dryer sometimes not. I'm a high mileage runner so shoes don't last that long, so washing them makes no difference.
  • Just like with anything, you need to test gels while training. I wouldn't take anything someone just handed to me without knowing how it will affect me. I tend to take a sip of water before gel consumption then another sip after. Some gels go down better than others and I'd say that has the most to do with it.
  • CamelBak makes a new running specific pack called "Dart." I have it and use it on runs over 10 miles. I rather backpacks than bottle/fanny belts. I find it's pretty comfy and as for sweating, it's near 100% humidity here already--you're going to sweat regardless might as well have 1.5 Liters on your back...

  • We go to Florida every year for family vacation (Destin/Ft. Walton area). Very beachy and lots of things to do there. I never have a problem eating there--even though there are not many specific vegan restaurants. I tend to do lots of fancy tropical salads when we eat out. The rest is stuff I pick up from the Fresh Market…
  • New battery didn't work, but I took the lid off and set it directly under the desk (fluorescent bulb) lamp for a few hours to dry up. Viola! Works again. Guess I'll need to get a replacement o-ring before I use it again and let it dry out for several more days to insure it doesn't corrode. I really wish these HRMs had…
  • I tried a reset, still won't sync to the HRM. The battery cave had a dab of moisture--appears I loss the o-ring (same thing happened to my Wahoo HRM (and was it's demise). Sent wife out to get a new battery, hoping I can salvage it with a new o-ring purchase if needed, otherwise I'll have to buy another unit. I have never…
  • Yeah, the cadence has never worked since I got the CycleOps PowerCal. Actually today, neither power meter or HRM worked at all. I recorded on both Strava app & Garmin with similar (but different) results. I went with the Garmin which was 5k less distance (but zero elevation). Might have to reset the Garmin or maybe the…
  • Snatch, Roja, and Vader.
  • CycleOps PowerCal is fairly inexpensive, syncs easily with most devices and will give you HRM & power meter (based on math, but good enough for post-ride analysis). I personally used Wahoo stuff and was not impressed. So far CycleOps has worked very well.
  • KatyFace9801 had some excellent points. I tend to get 70-80g daily from much of what she said. I usually use a scoop of protein powder in my smoothies (PlantFusion is what I like). I also eat tempeh pretty frequently--I don't do tofu or other fake meats. I need a bit more protein than most since I put in a lot of high…
  • Just started using the Huma Gels and I find they digest really easy and taste great. When I want something with more substance, I like Larabars. It's really hot & humid down here so I like to mix Vega Sport Electrolyte into my CamelBak for runs longer than 10. I haven't had any cramping issues yet nor do I take any sodium…
  • I'd say running lean is a huge advantage. I've primarily kept lean because I find it helps tremendously in cycling (long distance & climbing). Once I started running again, it was almost seamless and I'm faster and stronger than I ever was when I was running a lot when younger. 38, 5' 10" 140lbs, <9% BF 10K: 41:46 10 mile:…
  • “400k or more. Anything less is kiddie pool stuff. " Yes, I said that and it was pure sarcasm. I apologize to those who may not have read it as such. It seems there is no wiggle room for banter here, so I’ll leave my future posts to the “rides only thread.” The first 30 miles of my long ride on Saturday was spent with a…
  • HOLY CRAP!!! If that isn't the best excuse I've ever heard (poor dog, of course...) No worries, amigo we have next week. It's been a good week all-around.
  • 400k or more. Anything less is kiddie pool stuff.
  • Someone in the main forum told me riding (cycling) 10,000 miles last year has no fitness benefit. :noway:
  • Always open to share ideas and diaries with like-minded people.
  • Stay in the subforums (like this one). I felt like I got jumped by a gang on the regular forum section. People are more helpful here and will cater to your wants, etc.
  • Get to work Team 4. The current difference to Team 1 is nominal and about the mileage I plan to ride in the next few days anyhow. I should be good for 300+ miles next week. Let's see the rest of you post some big numbers too.
  • You won't see any numbers like that for an individual ride on the remainder of the challenge from me. We did another this time last year around 240k. I did attempt 300k back in January, but fell short at 273. In any case, Saturday was a beast of ride even though we are flatlanders down here--pace was tough, and I couldn't…
  • Just for the record, my number x2 is 666. \m/.
  • Sorry, just learning of this now. If you get a 4th going, I'll join. http://app.strava.com/athletes/783384
  • This. I gave up coffee some months back (mainly due to stress levels it places on the body and I find if you consume it more frequently the benefits mentioned above are diluted). Occasionally I'll have a bar on a long ride or run with caffeine and I get a certain short-lived jolt, which is helpful if I'm out on a really…
  • I’ll usually take a break along my rides if I ride over 70 miles. I will usually bring an energy bar and fruit. I’ve been documenting my longer rides intake on Strava (for those here that follow me). For example, I rode 80 miles last Saturday and had 4 bottles (3 electrolyte mix, 1 water) and had 1 Larabar with 5 dates. I…
  • You should weigh yourself before and after a run to see how much you are losing. This should be repeated (same distance/time different times of the year where it may be hotter/colder). This will aid in accounting for how much water you should be consuming, etc. I used to get bad headaches when I go on long distance cycling…
