  • Congrats on the 32-miler! I may hit you up for some notes as I get closer to mine. I just finished reading Scott Jurek's "Eat & Run" book--I think you are right with your assessment "a LOT of carbs is idea for endurance people."
  • Thanks! Cycling miles might come down somewhat for the year with increasing running miles (I'd like to get up to 70 pw by the end of the year). Feel free to follow me on Strava.
  • No, I haven't. That's purely based on comparison to self (the way I feel now vs. before). Granted I am in much better shape these days than I used to be. And, I hate to compare myself to others, because I think there are too many unfair variables (what others diets may be, amount of training applied, and topography of…
  • Great thread. I'm Vegan and have been meatless for going on 8 years. During that time I slowly progressed to where I am (first giving up red meat, then poultry, then seafood, then dairy, etc.) I'm a high mileage cyclist and recently adding running (planning to do a 50-mile ultra by the end of year). Last year cycling miles…
  • I caught it on TV the other day, classic! I also like Quicksilver (and wonder if it spawned the hipster movement...)
  • Very true. MTB skillz die hard. I ride 700x25s and am just as fast in gravel as I am on roads. The roads down here are ****ty are also, so I like the mix of all (and dirt). The thing I tell everyone on riding skinny in gravel "Let the bike go where it wants to and just give it a slight nudge from time to time. Otherwise…
  • CycleOps Powercal $100ish. Not extremely accurate during rides, but great for analysis afterwards (it's what I use). Google review by DCRainmaker.

  • I don't have any friends either, add me if you want. I'm a vegan straightedge superhero powered by the darkside.
  • Premium if you are using a HRM or power meter (or both) is a must. The level of analysis you get with those datasets are very helpful. If you have neither, it's not worth it.

  • I haven't worked out in years, IMO the only thing that helps cycling is more cycling and proper training. On top of that is diet--if you want to be faster get leaner. Not many 200lbs pros...
  • Running will lower your heart rate on the bike, but you have to put in some miles to get it. Cycling is my first love, but recently after I completed a nearly 200 mile ride I have become burnt out so I switched gears to running in hopes to do some ultrarmarathons. I still get on the bike for at least 100 miles or so a week…
  • I use Look Keo Classic, they held up well last year for nearly 10,000 miles. I did replace the cleats once. I've used Time iClics, SPDs, and Cane Creek Egg Beaters (I'm half mtb). I ride a lot of gravel and I find the Look's hold up well and are fairly easy to get in & out of.
  • You don't need a MTB or CX bike for gravel. Ride what ya got! In my profile pic I am on a Binachi 928 carbon, I can ride just about anything gravel or dirt on it. I recently purchased a Giant TCX SLR (I wanted disk brakes and clearance to run 28s--I run 25s now). "Gravel" is my middle name.
  • 50 or 100 mile ultramarathon by end of 2014. I logged 10,000 miles cycling last year, so I am taking at easy this year...
