The olympic plates you buy should be circular, not hexagon or octagon shaped. I would do a power rack but recognize that it will be idle 99% of the time unless someone is curling in it... ;)

There are no absolutes so, as others have said, it depends on your goals. There are pros and cons of lifting one day and cardio another. For instance, if you're lifting 3 days/week and also doing cardio 3 days/week you now have 4 days/week for recovery/rest. I would say try different things and see what works for you.…

Eating out at some restaurant without TVs since they won't be crowded. ;)

I haven't figured this out myself outside of being sure to cover all of my skin (including some vaseline on my face). It's been extra cold in the DC area this winter...

I don't think the soreness after running is DOMS. I'll be sore pretty much immediately, not a couple days later as in DOMS.

What are you doing for your short intense cuts, something like PSMF?

Back when I was powerlifting I would bulk in a random way and then knock the fat off to compete. I generally didn't have very good results in terms of body composition since I was basically just eating like a pig on the bulk side (made for some nice PRs though). I did manage to lean out really well for my last meet though…

I run every day even if sore. One nice thing about running every day is it teaches you to not overdo it on any individual run and also teaches you to take it easy when you've managed to get sore.

Very nice! I remember the fun of PR after PR. Congrats! The idea that a program can become outdated is pretty silly. If it worked before it'll still work and the main things are getting the basics right and being consistent, which you can do with any reasonable program.

I'll be doing my first official half (have run that far many times but never "raced" one) with one of my kids this May in Frederick, MD. We're doing a pseudo Lydiard program to get ready (doing the 2 mid week and 1 weekend long runs from Lydiard's way of training but without other specific workouts, albeit still running…

Why are you mentioning bulgarian?

When I was first squatting in a commercial gym I would grab one of the aerobic steps and set it up at a height that would get me a below parallel squat. I would lightly touch the step at the bottom of each rep and that ensured consistent depth and kept me from cheating on heavier weights.

Some people you can't help unless you're standing there in the room with them keeping them from doing stupid stuff... ;)

When I was competing (wow, last meet was 10 years ago this May) I used sumo. I have relatively long legs/arms and a short torso. I've done both conventional and sumo in training albeit more intensely on sumo. I recently bought a trap bar to do the lazy 'old' man's DL/squat hybrid thing. ;)

It was about 22°F today when I ran and it was shorts weather for me, especially since it was harder work than usual with the packed snow and ice. I made the mistake of wearing long sleeves and managed to soak my arms, chest, neck, and back with sweat. My hat came off after a couple miles and it was soaked in sweat at that…

SoLongAndThanksForAllTheFish, I must not be clear as you have completely misinterpreted what I've said. My recommendation to the OP if he wants to do daily deadlifting is to check out Power to the People, which is a good program for beginners with a lot of other good info on lifting. My other comments are to the posters…

OP, PM me. If I can find my copy of Power to the People I would be happy to send it to you. Even if you don't use the program there is a lot of good info in the book. Note that you really should give any plan you try at least a few months.

I'm going to disagree on your comment on volume and strength gains. While western programs tend towards lower volume and higher intensity ones from the east (e.g., Sheiko) tend more towards volume and "moderate" intensity. Both methods have produced world champions. Higher volume is going to tend to bring about neural…

Sure, I think the OP needs some pre-built plan, that he keeps to the letter with, to get him going down the right road. Customizing and screwing around with different variables is once you know your own body better...

Seems most of the posters on this thread subscribe to what amounts to fairly modern lifting practices and seem to believe that those modern lifting practices are the only valid ones. Daily lifting was not unusual before the 1950s/1960s and, believe it or not, there were strong guys before the mid 20th century. More…

Have you checked out Power to the People by Pavel Tsatsouline? It may be right up your alley and is a tried and true program with deadlifting 5x per week. I've done frequent deadlifting myself and see no problem with it when approached the right way.

I wonder, when you're not particularly young any more (like both of us), if people think it's possible we're sick or something rather than losing weight to get in shape. Looks to me like you're doing really well. Keep it up!
