If you have a dehydrator (about $40 at Walmart) you can save browned ground beef for months. I made a large amount of it to take backpacking on the Appalachian Trail. A lot of hikers did.... we called it "Hiker Hamburger" or "Hamburger Gravel" because it looks like dark fine gravel. My husband sent me the food I had…

I used to do once-a-month cooking when we were raising 3 teens and also feeding a lot of their friends who dropped by. Once I had the monthly meals cooking, pots and pans everywhere, house smelled like a restaurant, when our daughter and several of her high school friends breezed in after school. I said, "Hey, you're just…

This was while ago, so I hope your teen recovered completely and that your own injury healed as well. And I hope your financial situation is better now. Am I reading that you budgeted $150 a month for a family of 7? Can you remember how you did that? =-O I would be very interested if you could remember a list of the…

This is great! Tasty chicken stock coming up!

LOL on the cauliflower display..... YUM on the carrot-dog idea!

I'm thinking add a drop or two of liquid smoke for a sort-of more hot-doggy flavor.

Believe it or not, when I read the topic my only thought was a workout routine, probably running or multi-sport like triathlon training, and went to the topic because of that. Never thought of anything else till I read the first line.

WooHOOO! Fantastic! That took you less time than it took me to ride 105! Yeah, guys, that's 105, not 125. Hot, hot day, felt crappy, walked some hills, missed a cutoff time and was required to divert to century ride. I'll bet it was that extra contact lens that broke the camel's back.

Agree 100%. There are so many things it could be, you could fool around for ages trying different things and not hit on the right one, missing your training and your half in the process. Go to a doctor. Be sure to tell the doc you are training for a half marathon and want to continue running. Physical therapy might combine…

Gosh, I might be blushing :blushing: No, wait, that's just sunburn. Kept sweating off my sunscreen. Thank you for your wonderful, kind words, Sue. I don't know, I just felt like I did what anyone might have done..... when you find yourself with lemons, make lemonade :-) Actually I was really glad to be obligated to switch…

OK, guys, I reneged on the extra water bottle. Going to be hot today, 80*, all sun, no wind. I'm starting with it empty but I may want to keep dousing myself between aid stations. Taking no chances. The bottle doesn't weigh much.... I'll fill it if necessary.

I hope everything goes perfectly for you tomorrow! Sheesh, you're going 100K farther than I am..... that means, if I were to do it, I'd have 62 more miles. Uh-uh, not this time. I'm glad I don't have to run a full marathon afterwards, too. I'm limiting my time at rest stops. There are 6, so just 5 minutes at each one will…

Oh, geez..... I forgot to pack the snowblower. Weather is changeable here in the mountains. Seriously, folks..... I just took everything out of the bento box and put it on the scale I use to weigh my backpacking gear (where I am really, really serious about weight, down to the gram.) Anyway, bento box contents total 7…

Oh, my goodness! I am so glad I can help you find strength.... and you are helping me find strength I didn't know I had. I was thinking as you realized Satan was trying to get you to stop.... I know I will have thoughts of stopping on Saturday.... is that Satan trying to make me stop? What purpose would he have in trying…

Well, it's day after tomorrow, and there's no more I can do to get ready. We've been home, out of the flatlands into "my" mountains, for about 6 weeks. I haven't trained as much as I'd fantasized about, but I know my way up a hill, and I'm ready to go. 125 miles, 16,500 feet of climbing. One of the hardest bike rides in…

HOW VERY WONDERFUL!!! Reading this post made me feel so happy! I love your pictures and I love the words you have put together. What a lovely writing. Thank you, Rose!

Little hobo stoves made out of Pepsi cans are a classic Scout project. They're fun. They work well. They weigh nothing. I can't think of many things I've been more pleased with than my first Pepsi can stove. They burn denatured alcohol, which you can buy by the quart in hardware stores (no one should carry a quart of it on…

I have been frustrated lately by this very thing in myself: that I don't talk with God even though He is right there with me. I know He is but I just don't think about it. I'm too busy with whatever else I'm thinking about. I've thought of setting my watch to beep every X minutes just to remind me. Because just about every…

Rose.... wow. Not only your original post but your thoughtful subsequent ones in response to replies and questions. This, folks, is what determination and inspiration look like.

You know that bear cannisters are now required in the section around Blood Mountain/Neels Gap, right? I would recommend doing a lot of reading about lightweight backpacking techniques. Read up on whiteblaze.net. My grandson is hiking 100 miles with scouts at Philmont (New Mexico) soon and I can't believe how much stuff…

1. Are you offended, or are you annoyed? If you receive it as a personal affront, you are offended. If it gets under your skin, you are annoyed. Be sure you are using the correct word when you criticize the use of an incorrect word. 2. "Loose" is, in fact, correctly used as a transitive verb, albeit pronounced with a soft…

The Diabolical Double (June 22 this year) has been on my bucket list for probably 4 years. I registered for it 2 years ago but then, a month out, was pretty certain I wasn't trained enough, and downgraded to the Savage Century (which took me nearly 11 hours.) This year I'm signed up for it again. I'll have enough distance…

WhooHOOOO!!! Great distance and pretty darn fast as well! Me, today I did my longest distance since last August, 6.2 miles, 10K. Not a race, just a distance. Ran/walked 4/1minute cycles.

I don't have a favorite brand, but my favorite style is just old loose cutoffs. Given that most people don't like running in those I'd say go to www.rei.com -- they have everything and if you don't like it you can send it back even if you've used it, washed it, doesn't matter, they will take it back. 100% satisfaction…

"Not too shabby?" Man, that's EXCELLENT! Great run! Congratulations!

So today I ran for an hour in 44*F, rain, wind. Wore lined rain/wind pants, a lightweight longsleeved wicking baselayer, microfiber wind/rain jacket, gloves, knit hat. After 10 minutes, peeled off the gloves. Five more minutes and I unzipped the jacket. Twenty minutes and I realized I was totally overdressed.... by end of…
